Christian Right silent over tsunamis

The Christian Right's odd silence over the tragedies that befell southeast Asia this past weekend is truly deafening. A cursury check of their websites and blogs show not a mention of the calamity. As Bill Berkowitz at Workingforchange.com points out...

In fact, there is no mention of the giant earthquake and tsunami that devastated southern Asia. There are no headlines about the dead, injured or the tremendous damage; there are no urgent appeals for donations; there are no phone numbers to call; there are no links to organizations collecting money and providing aid for the victims.

But the Christian Right continues to wage their various assualts on our democracy like extremist judicial nominees, advocating a constitutional amendment against same-sex marrage, and fighting against a women's right to choose rather than joining the world in trying to help the victims in Indonesia, Thailand and India.

Shameful and sad.

This is gonna get me in hot water...but...The only time this disaster is mentioned here is when it provides a context to wage attacks of your own. I see no numbers here for donations. I see no links on how to help. I see plenty of attacks though. Maybe if we spent more time on how to help instead of complaining that our government isnt doing it for us....

Theres a list of places you can donate to help out. Research them on your own first, to make sure they suit your standards, but it's a start. Lactar's Empire of Awesomeness does not endorses or condemn any of these groups.

Whatever you think Bush should raise your taxes to pay for this, donate that amount. Or divide the amount you think the US should give by 250,000,000....or less than that, if you subtract the people living in poverty who cant give. Or give the percentage of your income that you think the US should give (for those of you doing calculations based on our GDP). Once you have done that, you may continue the Bush bashing. Dig deep folks, Im actually paying off credit cards so I can hit them again to donate, so dont reach for that "h" key just yet.

Stephen,

Your cynicism is impressive.

Lactar,

First, there is no hypocrisy here (try as you might to find some). The Cristian Right looks bad for being so silent because, A. They claim to be doing God's work and B. they have a massive PR machince that gets them heard by millions every time anyone one of thier spokespeople open thier mouths.

This blog is brand spankin' new, so doesn't reach the millions the CR does. Also, this blog doesn't claim to have God's ear and a connection to his bat phone.

You went off on this rant about the government and raising taxes for relief. Where did you get that? Oh, let me guess, Rush. Or maybe some Cristian Right rag that we "liberals" don't have access to?

By the way, I'm paying off credit card debt too and I donated 100 bucks yesterday. Seems the Godly thing to do, as small as it is.

No, I didnt rant about them doing that, I said that if you thought they should, then you ought to donate by that amount.

By the way, our idiot government is already in debt, and I would guess that most people here agree that massive debt is bad, eh? Sooooo, to pay huge amounts would require A.) More debt B.) More taxes....Unless we let people decide on their own how much to give.

Heres what the government SHOULD be doing, and thats logistics, because I sure as hell cant go into my back yard and unmothball a coupla SR-71s to do recon, or send a helicopter from my fleet to move foodstuffs. Leave the cash to the citizens, and let the Gov donate some heavy equipment.

And to say that somebody else is wrong for not doing something, when you are capable of doing it yourself, and simply dont, IS hypocracy.

My displeasure is this: It would take an extra ten seconds to post a link to places to go to help, hell, maybe even a bit longer to throw one on the bar to the left of the text, and then continue on with the attacks. It would do a lot of good, with minimal effort.

I suppose you think that by Bush commiting 350 million dollars in aid, you think that that is an "all cash" commitment. Well, it is not. Your helicopter example costs money - the government just doesn't loan it out (and the fuel as well) for free. So the 350 million dollar pledge encompasses all of this.

As far as deficits and this situation, we are in a deficit situation because of Bush's incompetence - not because of a potential 350 million dollar pledge of aid (which we may or may not actually pay - see most recent post).

Note, I said the idiot government is ALREADY in debt. And its not just Bush, because congress has been rubber stamping all his stuff for four years. Besides which, house appropriations is where most money gets stalled anyway.

Post the damn link, Beiderman, and you'll not only be doing a service, you'll have more room to slam those who dont.

Stephen,

It's spelled Biederman. Now do us all a favor and go away.
