Fox News priority watch, 12.15.04

The Fox News pundits (Hannity, Buchanan, and O'Reilly mainly) seem to think that somehow Christmas is going to be cancelled. Forever and ever. "Christmas Under Attack!" the logos say. Kids can't sing songs about Baby Jesus in public schools! Macy's is banning the word "Christmas" from banners in their store! Jews should move back to Israel! And "Happy" the Baby New Year is missing! Possibly kidnapped by Jews and atheists who hate babies with giant ears!

However, regarding voting irregularities and threats to our most basic democratic principle of one-person-one-vote... (Crickets chirping)

People like O'Reilly consider the term "holiday tree" an offense. The idea definitely is to move away from the Christian-specific "christmas tree". But to something more inclusive. The new term isn't "devil tree", for crying out loud.

Obviously, inclusivity is something conservatives aren't the least bit interested in.

But what I love is how they've made up this rule that only they are allowed to get offended at anything.

I wonder if these guys even known the true origin to the holiday now called Christmas. The Christmas Tree, Yule Log, and other details are – get ready for it – Pagan. Had nothing to do with Christianity until the church decided to covert pagans across Europe to build their masses several centuries ago. And one method was to adopt these "pagan" holidays as Christian holidays and somewhat change their meaning making the Church look more desireable to the non-converted.

The whole subject annoys and disgusts me. My Christmas celebrations have nothing to do with Christ other than the name "Christmas" we all grew up accustomed to. I have no problem with those who want to celebrate it in a Christian manner, but I don't like it when they complain that Christ isn't in the forefront. I've known plenty of non-Christians who acknowledge and/or take part in the festivities. Check these situations out, for example:

A husband and wife I'm friends with, naturalized American citizens – she's a Muslim from Turkey, he's a Hindu from India – celebrate the holiday with the tree, gifts and all. They started doing it so their kids would feel included in the American culture though they enjoy it just as much.

My daughter's Jewish babysitter celebrates it. She also celebrates Chanukah. She was out gift shopping when I spoke to the other day.

My daughter's godfather, a very spiritual non-secular Christian, celebrates Christmas but refuses to accept the Christian tradition of the holiday. He completely seperates the holiday from relgion all together.

I'm all for inclusivity. But I'm not for removal of the name "Christmas" on Macy's banners or not allowing kids to sing holiday songs in school. I'd rather open up all doors of anyhting to celebrate and allow each individual to make up their own minds.
