Driving your SUV while the planet burns

Hummer_make.jpg

For all you Americans who drive SUVs: JUST CUT IT OUT.

If the heaviest rainfall in the history of California isn't enough to convince you that our planet is in deep environmental shit, then check out this little piece from the CBC on the lack of snow in Europe this winter.

Automakers are starting to produce hybrids en masse, but they still won't change the emissions standards for SUVs. Is your pathetically needy ego going to be able to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays? Deal with feeling small in some way that doesn't destroy the only planet we've got.

Some people actually DO need those cars, contractors, farmsers, people in rural areas, the handicaped, people who drive large numbers of people around.
Some of those cars are actualy not that bad either, put a stick shift in a small SUV, it gets better milage than most older sedans and even newer minivans.

It's not just the mileage, it's the emissions standards, which are horrendous, and the gov't and Detroit are in league on keeping it thus.

And you're talking about a pathetically small percentage of SUV owners who actually "need" these monstrosities. "The handicapped"? What the fuck are you talking about? My cousin is a polio victimie who can't walk, and he drives a sedan. It's easier to get into, obviously. And mechanics can outfit ANY car with hand controls for gas and brakes. It also gets much better mileage and thus means he has to gas up less frequently, which is a plus when you can't walk.

Oh, you must be talking about people with handicapped penis size! Or handicapped brains! Or a handicapped sense of caring for their fellow human beings! Sorry, Stephen. I forgot about all those handicapped people.

Actually, a great many of the handicapped use panel trucks and other large cars because they can sit in their wheelchair to drive, and lifts can be put in the back. A HUGE plus when you cant walk is to not have to somehow fold and load your chair before you get into the car. And while I drove a smaller, fairly efficient car for a year or two, the only people who ever gave me crap were driving 15-20 year old automatic junkers that spewed oil smoke wherever they went. Hell, I'm hard pressed to think of anybody I know who owns any large SUV who doesnt regularly make use of the car in a legit way. The worst car I can think of is my brothers old pickup, but it was a freebie, and since he's a student with about $250 dollars in the bank at a time, thats the best he can do.
I wonder if this isnt the left's version of the welfare queen. Course, I dont live in a big city, and those people are nuts anyway. Maybe that is a big problem out by you. Maybe out here people just use their shit a little better (or are not so rich they dont buy a bigass car/truck unless they need it)

The point is still the emissions. Detroit and the feds are in league to keep SUV emissions standards BELOW those of cars, because SUVs are classified as "farm vehicles."

Check out the post above about melting glaciers. This is a bigger issue than people having "legit" uses of vehicles.
