FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!

By our efforts, we have lit a fire as well - a fire in the minds of men. It warms those who feel its power, it burns those who fight its progress, and one day this untamed fire of freedom will reach the darkest corners of our world.

He said the word "freedom" 27 times. Freedom... except for the gay community, women, minorities, dissenters, etc. But are we really going to spread freedom with warfare (fire) in every dark corner of the world? Or was this just an unfortunate metaphor?

How exactly is Bush harming freedom for Women. As I recall, the folks we deposed in Afganistan were among the most oppressive to women in the world.

Hmmm. That's easy.

Saudi Arabia. Check their record on women's rights. Look for references to "stoning".

And, of course, reproductive choice here at home.

Let's not forget Iraq. Before we invaded, Iraq had some of the most broadminded policies toward women in the middle east, far more broad-minded that Saudi Arabia, Jordan, UAE, or Kuwait. For instance, Iraqi women could teach in universities, be lawyers, wear skirts or pants, and file for divorce.

Now, of course, Iraqi women are not only under fire from American troops. They are also covering themselves head-to-toe so they aren't beaten by fundamentalist Muslims of the Taliban vein. Iraqi women are worse off today than they were under Saddam Hussein. And that's saying a lot.

And, please, Stephen, let's not be under ANY illusions that Bush bombed Afghanistan to free women. That's just not true. In fact, outside of Kabul, the situation for women -- and for men and children, is pretty much unchanged from when the Taliban was in power.

And if you go back in history a scant 25 years, you'll perhaps remember who helped to fund and foster the Taliban, and who brought them to power: the USA, under the auspices of Reagan and underlings like Cheney and Rumsfeld. And, yes, they knew what the Taliban thought of women at the time. It didn't matter to them then, and it doesn't matter to them now.
