« Bush approval sinks to 45% | Main | Gannongate: keep the media focussed »

February 11, 2005

Does Bush's quacking scare anyone else?

It's becoming quite clear that Mr. Bush has overestimated his power and accelerated his lame duck status. 45% approval. Little support for Social Security reform. Propaganda. Gannon. More torture. Rough confirmation hearings for Gonzales, Rice, and Chertoff. The Kerik debacle. Ignored 9/11 warnings. North Korea calling Bush's bluff. Credibility issues regarding an approach to Iran. A weird inaugural address that scared many on both sides of the ideological isle.

I'd really like to savor the slow-motion train wreck, but something's eating at me. Will the Bush administration allow itself to be crushed before it's really even begun its second term? The grand plans of Rove and the PNAC neocons have been decades in the making. Bush has taken up the mantle of "big ideas" and "big reforms" here and abroad, most of which are in keeping with those plans -- and none of which are possible with such a dismal (for them) array of problems. Will they really allow it all to crumble in a few short months without taking some sort of action?

And when I say "action", I mean something scary. Something that will rally the nation around Mr. Bush again. Here's to hoping I'm just being paranoid, but we all know what this crew is capable of when threatened. Let's just keep our eyes open. Impeachment, lame duck status, approvals in the 30s, and retaking the Congress in '06 are all possibilities. But a twinkle in the eye of Karl Rove could change all of it.

Damn! I sure hope he keeps quacking. I hope people start opening their eyes and seeing just what is squatting in the whitehouse.

As if it matters. He is in charge for the next four years, and his party has the legislative branch pretty well under control too. Besides, America at large watches their news on TV. If this isnt playing every 25 minutes on cable, it isnt news, except to those inclined to A.) Follow and Participate in politics, and B.) Look into alternative media.

You look at this and see a slow motion train wreck. An "Ah-ha, now nobody can deny the villiany before them!" moment. Everybody else says "What now? Some newspaper guy took some bribes?"

If it isnt front page CNN.com, it isnt news. If it isnt on Fark.com and the Daily Show, it doesnt matter.

Thats your CNN. As much as this story may matter, it doesnt matter to very many. This wont panic them. You'd need something along the lines of Clinton-lies-under-oath-about-a-blowjob-gate, with the news slamming it home every ten minutes.

He's going to keep quacking regardless. And I share with you a concern that at any moment Rove will ask himself "What would Niccolo do?" and take the little book out of his desk drawer what humming "Onward Chri- ..."

Who knows what Rove and company might come up with. They know that they were able to get away with murder in his first term by keeping people in a state of fear. All it would take is an explosion in a major city (there wouldn't even have to be casualties), followed by a finger pointed at the Iranian (or North Korean, or French) government. I wouldn't put it past them to do something like that to rally the American people behind them. I'm not sure if that's what you meant, but I've been thinking that for a while now.

Whats neat is that all the potential scary attacks the media points out, are really not all that deadly. I mean, they have about 3 favorites, and if you do a little research, you'll discover that while it WOULD panic the masses (thanks to the media hype) none of them are all that dangerous to a population at large.
The terrorists will never 10% of the threat drunk drivers do.
