Cap'n Falafel Fights Obama Staffer

Falafel!

Here's what O'Reilly did today: He deliberately instigated a fight for the sole purpose of turning it around and making himself out to be the victim for fun and ratings...just like every episode of his primetime professional wrestling show.

He knew that by showing up at a Democratic rally that he'd become the story. To wit: is anyone reporting what Senator Obama said at the Nashua rally? You can also count on O'Reilly spinning this to seem like the Democrats at the rally (and especially Marvin Nicholson) are "hateful" or "hateful pinheads" and that he himself was just playing the role of the harmless American looking for answers.

By the way, I'm all for revealing this talking turd for what and who he is (a lying, McCarthy-ish ratings whore) but at some point we're going to have to banish him into the Ann Coulter phantom zone and stop paying attention to his pathetic, desperate cries for help.

TRex's take. Schecter's take. Amato's video.

Whoops!

From three points ahead to ten points behind -- Senator Clinton better crank up the negative attacks or else. The latest Rasmussen poll in New Hampshire:

Barack Obama - 37%
Hillary Clinton - 27%
John Edwards - 19%

Meanwhile, Senator Clinton's stronger Zogby numbers are rolling back as well.

I agree with Cenk: if Senator Obama wins New Hampshire and South Carolina (SC is his to lose), then he'll win the nomination.

More Scary Wingnuts

...Only this time, the wingnuts are very serious and respected wingnuts who also happen to be racists. Glenn Reynolds and Jonah Goldberg think there will be race riots if Senator Obama loses -- they euphemistically call it a "social unraveling". Greenwald has more.

The Crowds In New Hampshire

That's 2,500 people waiting in line to hear Senator Obama speak in Nashua today. Meanwhile, Senator Clinton is going negative.

Scary Wingnuts

John Amato found a really psychotic wingnut at Free Republic:

Here’s a sample of the kind of attacks Obama will be facing because of his win in Iowa. It’s pretty disturbing.
Did the weakest Dem candidate for the general election won tonight? I think so. By sending forth Hussein Osama out of Iowa, Democrats have unwittingly weakened their general election prospects.

Hussein’s exotic mixture of radical liberalism, Kwanzaa Socialism, antipathy towards the unborn, and weakness against his jihadi brethren will all come back to destroy him against almost any Republican opponent, even the snake-grope from Hope.

I think we as Republicans should be celebrating tonight at the coronation of Hussein, in whose presence millions of Democrat women, from elementary school teachers to journalism majors to law school grads to dykes on bikes will go weak in their knees.

As defenders of this great Republic, and of the pinnacle of Western civilization that it represents, we should all come together tonight and agree on a common strategy that will keep the White House from becoming a madrassa.

God Bless America, Land of the Free.

What the hell is "Kwanzaa Socialism"? Is it me, or does it read like there's an unspoken n-word between every line?

This Is Awesome

model_taxi.jpgA car that runs on compressed air -- and it's real. The BBC by way of Cliff Schecter (with video):

The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.

Which incompetent Detroit asshat will try to kill it or ban it from use in the United States? Will it be GM? Will it be Ford, whose stock price is at a pathetic $6/share? Or will it be the agri-businesses in the midwest who are betting on ethanol?

ABC News headline:

If we ever elect another president whose "bed time" is mentioned in this child-like context, we deserve to be invaded and conquered by the Chinese.

The Senator's Speech

The only President of the United States who appeared on television tonight was Senator Barack Obama.

The line that made me smile: "9/11 is not a way to scare up votes, but a challenge that should unite America and the world against the common threats of the 21st century."

It was exactly 145 years and two days ago -- January 1, 1863 -- when another Illinoisan, President Abraham Lincoln, officially emancipated the slaves held in captivity in the secessionist states.

Suffice to say, Dad and I disagree on this.

NBC Is Projecting...

...Senator Obama wins the Iowa Caucus!

The historical significance is staggeringly powerful. This is one of the reasons why John Edwards has such an uphill battle from this point forward. He's fighting the awesome tide of history. Democrats want to make the books and whether it's ultimately Senator Obama or Senator Clinton, Democrats are going to do what's necessary to make this one of the most significant presidential elections in the nation's history.

Disgraceful

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Three US soldiers have been killed in Iraq, the US military announced on Thursday, making them the first American casualties of the new year.

A military statement said two soldiers were killed in a small-arms fire attack while conducting operations in Diyala province on Thursday. Another soldier was wounded. MORE.

This has to be a mistake. I thought the war was over.

$100

Just in time for the coldest months of the year, oil prices topped $100/barrel today. And call me naive, but I'm always staggered that there are Wall Street traders who actually think this is awesome news -- the traders who are ghoulish enough to own oil futures, that is.

Conservative, Pro-War Edwards

I'm following Kos as he boosts Edwards without endorsing him. This particular line is revealing:

Funny that Kucinich endorsed the war-supporting conservative Edwards in 2004, but has now ditched the far more progressive 2008 edition. I'll never understand that guy.

His confusion about Kucinich notwithstanding, Markos inadvertently underscored my skepticism about the former senator: John Edwards seems to go with what's hot. This year, he's a populist progressive because it's cool and awesome. Four years ago when we especially needed a populist progressive on the Kerry/Edwards ticket -- not so much. This sort of trendy behavior is what might've coaxed him into voting with the president on Iraq.

Kos Rips Obama For Some Reason

I don't get this post.

Obama's recent embrace of right-wing talking points and wholesale embracing of Broderite "Unite 08" talking points suggests that he's giving up on Iowa and playing to the independent vote in New Hampshire. He has to stay close in Iowa to remain viable in New Hampshire, but I'm not sure why else he would decide to shit on Democrats at such a rapid clip these past few days.

I'm shocked by the lack of insight. Senator Obama's notion of unity has no similarity whatsoever to Unity '08's bipartisan ridiculousness -- Senator Obama's unity is about winning support from opponents who outright disagree with his policies. He achieves this with his energy, exuberance and honesty. If anyone thinks Senator Obama is going to be a centrist or a capitulator, they're being myopic.

Meanwhile, Oliver Willis responds to Kos as well.

Kucinich Asks Supporters To Go With Obama

Huffington Post:

"I hope Iowans will caucus for me as their first choice this Thursday," Kucinich said in a statement to the press. "But in those caucus locations where my support doesn't reach the necessary threshold, I strongly encourage all of my supporters to make Barack Obama their second choice. Sen. Obama and I have one thing in common: Change."

Awesome.

32%

Senator Obama widened his lead over Senator Clinton. Obama: 32, Clinton: 25, Edwards: 24.

Des Moines Register:

The findings mark the largest lead of any of the Democratic candidates in the Register's poll all year, underscoring what has been a hard-fought battle among the three well-organized Iowa frontrunners.

The timing couldn't be better. A surge like this -- two days before the caucus -- shows more people could be solidifying their choice.

I Thought The War Was Over

Reuters:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed at least 30 people and wounded 38 at a funeral in eastern Baghdad on Tuesday and the deadliest attack in the Iraqi capital for months cast a pall over New Year celebrations.

The surge didn't work. The sooner everyone accepts this, the sooner we can move on to an actual solution.

Don't Do It, Mr. Mayor

Glenn Greenwald has some things to say about Mayor Bloomberg:

...this is just exactly what our country desperately needs, what it is missing most -- a neoconservative, combat-avoiding, Bush-supporting, Middle-East-warmonger who sees U.S. and Israeli interests as indistinguishable and inextricably linked, with a fetish for ever-increasing government control and surveillance, and a background as a Wall St. billionaire. We just haven't had enough of those in our political culture. Our political system, more than anything, is missing the influence of people like that. That's why it's broken: not enough of those.

My view is more basic:

1) A third party candidate can't win, no matter how much money is spent. Even if he were to beat the odds and win more popular votes than Perot in 1992, the electoral college is specifically designed to crush third parties.

2) Unlike Perot who ran as a populist/conservative and took votes away from President Bush 41, the perception of Mayor Bloomberg, despite what Greenwald is saying, is that he leans more progressive. Therefore, he would obviously take more votes away from the Democratic candidate than he would the GOP candidate. That means greater odds for a President McCain or President Giuliani or President Romney Unit.

The Surge Worked

The AP:

A suicide bomber drove a truck rigged with explosives into a checkpoint manned by members of a U.S.-backed security volunteer group in a town north of Baghdad on Monday, killing at least 12 people, police and a member of the volunteer group said.

How can anyone say that the surge worked -- or the more audacious "we won"?

Huckabee On Meet The Press

Huckabee just said:

"But remember that your most single -- critical job is that of preserving and protecting the American people."

He's referencing the Presidential Oath of Office here. But the oath is about "preserving and protecting" the Constitution -- not the people.

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

I don't see anything in there about dismantling our civil liberties in order to protect us from the evildoers.
