Progressive Edwards
I'm reading the comments on my Obama endorsement this morning and I'm amazed by how many progressives are willing to forgive Edwards' vote on Iraq. David Sirota once wrote that a progressive is a liberal who demands accountability. I'm not seeing any accountability here when it comes to the top issue in the campaign.
And right now I'm having trouble with Democrats who acquiesce to the president on Iraq.

Man, I am a little shocked by some of the comments. It's hard not to hear a little racial apprehension in some of our "liberal friends".

I'm seeing a lot of that, too. Most of it is under the guise of "the south won't vote for a black man." My response to that is simple: so? A couple of years ago, I wrote a Russert Watch item in which I pitched the idea of Senator Feingold for president. Some of the commenters said, "the south won't vote for a jew." John Ridley wrote something for the Huffington Post last week about soft bigotry. I'm beginning to see his point.

Followed by, "...and my vote will be for Edwards," the typical white guy from the south (whom I actually like quite a bit). I didn't expect that response, I thought they'd at least try and justify themselves by voting for "the woman", or the "bitch" as many have taken to calling Clinton (I don't like her, but even I don't got that far).
Missed that Ridley post, thanks Bob.

its a good point. the iraq vote. troubling. i guess people are thinking that he has learned, sees it as wrong. as a people, we generally forgive mistakes. we've all had judgments and decisions that have changed over time. but it is a very big mistake, its true.

Bob, one of the reasons I can't pull the mental trigger on Obama is that I have this idealist vision of a new Health Care system in this country. One that removes the greed of private markets and would bring about a kind of security to American families surpassing any this country has ever known.
However, a lot of what you are saying makes sense. Obama will not fulfill my vision BUT he would change the entire dynamic of American international relations in a positive and meaningful way. That alone would make his Presidency worthwhile.

Senator Obama's plan: "Making available a new national health program that will allow individuals and small businesses to buy affordable health care similar to that available to federal employees. No one will be turned away or charged more due to illness, and everyone who needs it will receive a subsidy for their premiums."
"Subsidy for their premiums" is universal healthcare.

Edwards admitted what a lot of us realized then and even more have realized since -- a terrible lot of people were left cowering and weak by Sept. 11. That fear is the only thing that would make The Chimp appear strong enough, upright enough and competent enough (even for five seconds) to lead this country.
Do we expect more from our leaders? Of course. Maybe people feel it's too little too late, and of course an apology doesn't begin to make up for the atrocities that have resulted from that vote.
But at least Edwards did apologize. Hillary sure doesn't, and it's all well and good for Obama to say he never would have voted that way, but we'll never know that for sure, will we?

I hope that the "passion" in progressive voters for their candidate of choice and their almost "disgust" for opposing candidates within the party is simply a result of the very strong desire to see a Democrat win. I hope progressives can swallow the bitter pill when their candidate of choice looses the nomination and we can all rally behind the chosen nominee.
I'm with Bob, I hope its Obama.

you dont need the scare quotes, ed. i have actual passion, and my disgust can breathe and move about, too. no walker needed.
vote your heart and conscience i say. whatever they may be. because that is what you will have to answer to come the day you die. not any poll or peer or board or blog. that's how i play it. i'm all for bob voting his, and i of course will do the same.
