The Gulf of Prankin' Incident
Navy Times says the Hormuz incident might have been an hilarious Iranian prank:
The threatening radio transmission heard at the end of a video showing harassing maneuvers by Iranian patrol boats in the Strait of Hormuz may have come from a locally famous heckler known among ship drivers as the “Filipino Monkey.”[...]
“For 25 years there’s been this mythical guy out there who, hour after hour, shouts obscenities and threats,” he said. “He could be tied up pierside somewhere or he could be on the bridge of a merchant ship.”
And the Monkey has stamina.
Unfortunately, so does our monkey.

Goddamn. We almost went to war with Iran -- which might've precipitated World War III -- over a dude named the "Filipino Monkey".

Did I Miss Something?
This past week, the president has been in the Middle East fucking up addressing Israeli-Palestinian peace.
But remember late last year when the Bush administration hosted peace talks between Olmo and Mahoomid? Did we ever hear the results of that event? I don't think we did.
Would I be way off base assuming the Annopolis peace talks failed and the attendees quietly ushered out the back door?

Our Hip Black Friend

"If you have a social need, you're with Hillary," the aide said. "If you want Obama to be your imaginary hip black friend and you're young and you have no social needs, then he's cool."
If there are any Senator Clinton supporters or staffers reading this, drop into the comments and please assure us that this trend isn't a strategy. Seriously. The Clinton campaign has been more than a little creepy since Iowa, but this statement here is -- I don't know what to call it other than what it is. It rhymes with "race baiting".
(And for the record, I defended Senator Clinton against a similarly awful remark yesterday.)

The War On Christians
You'll get a kick out of this.
In Connecticut, a devout Christian voter was so insanely worried that a Democratic president will declare a war on Christianity and -- get this -- destroy all Bibles, that she traveled to the home of a Democratic friend and asked him to hide her Bible in his house.
The Democratic friend asked, "If all Bibles are destroyed, what's the use of bringing yours to me? That won't save it."
The woman replied, "It'll be perfectly safe with you. They'll never think of looking in the house of a Democrat for a Bible."
BAM! Har-har. But it's a true story...
...from the presidential campaign of 1800.
The Bible-destroying Democrat the woman was so worried about?
Thomas Jefferson.

Lawrence?
Lawrence O'Donnell is having a really, really bad day:
A loser like Edwards has no status or dignity to lose. Campaigning and losing is his life. So, he will continue his simple-minded, losing campaign...
I don't know who pooped in O'Donnell's hot cocoa this morning but, at this point, John Edwards should absolutely continue to run. He'd be insane not to. If Senators Clinton and Obama end up fracturing the party (as I've personally witnessed in the comments over here), Edwards, who is only a few points behind, could be there to pick up the pieces. Let's face it, even though he's only recently become a true progressive, his progressivism is influencing the debate in a substantive and important way.
AND no matter how ugly the three-way Obama/Edwards/Clinton debate might become in the next month or so, it'll never be as scattered and silly as the freak show on the other side.
Meanwhile, I hope Lawrence brought his protective cup to work today.

"You're Making Fun Of Me."
The Republican debate last night underlined everything I don't like about the GOP candidates. Naturally there was the warmongering, fearmongering and stupidmongering. Lots of mongering.
But what really struck me was how the mainstream candidates laughed in Ron Paul's face. I mean, they only stopped short of duct-taping his ass cheeks together.
The disclaimer here is that I'm obviously not a Ron Paul supporter. That said, I really felt for the guy last night. Whenever Paul had something to say, everyone else treated him like a raving street loon. Rudy, Mitt Romney and Senator McCain especially.
At one point, Mitt Romney was laughing at Paul and through the laughter and taunts, Paul, with that wide-eyed, bewildered and befuddled face, said quietly, "You're making fun of me."
This is why the Republican Party is dying. Ron Paul represents what the GOP used to be, say nothing of the fact that his position on blowback is spot on -- and the modern Bush Republican dickheads in charge think he's a comedy sketch.

40,000 Pounds Of Surge

Also yesterday, we dropped 40,000 more pounds of bombs on Iraq in a ten-minute time-frame.
I thought the war was over and we won. Maybe the bombs were filled with Lieberman Brand chocolate kisses.

"The Surge Worked"
That's literally the title of a Wall Street Journal op/ed signed by Senators McCain and Lieberman. This struck me as revealing:
As the surge should have taught us by now, troop numbers matter in Iraq. We should adjust those numbers based on conditions on the ground...
In a nutshell:
1) Rotate some brigades out until violence on the ground increases again.
2) Surge again to stop the violence.
3) Repeat. For 100 years.
Also, notice how the president and the Bush Republicans used "the surge" to toss responsibility for Iraq onto General Petraeus' shoulders. It's no longer Bush's War, it's now General Petraeus' war to win or lose. I can't think of a more cowardly and cynical way to ultimately blame the troops should things fly off the rails again.

What's This You Say?
"Clinton fought back, but she needs a radio-controlled shock collar so that aides can zap her when she starts to get screechy." -Joel Achenbach, Washington Post
So the "screechy" thing was awful enough, but how terrible is that a very serious traditional media reporter imagined a female United States Senator wearing... a dog collar.

The Democratic Leadership Stands Up
The surge escalation didn't work:
"No amount of White House spin can hide the fact that the escalation's chief objective of political reconciliation remains unmet, Iraqis have not demonstrated any readiness to stand up and take responsibility for their own country, and 2007 was the most lethal year yet for American troops," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Hmm. The Democrats must be looking at Bizarro Iraq where the surge didn't work, instead of looking at the real Iraq where the war is over and they're throwing festive candy assortments at our soldiers.
It's not often that Senator Reid makes me smile, but this is a really strong statement. I'm also glad to see he's using the "escalation" word.

Best Health Care System In The World
Last weekend, the Republican candidates -- especially Giuliani -- crowed about how the American health care system is the best in the world. Paul Krugman makes graphs:

"Amenable mortality" is death that could have been prevented by good health care. Fingers crossed to beat Portugal next time!
Yep. Best in the world. We rock. Go American Health Care. Woo.

Clarifications
1) I don't care if or why Senator Clinton became emotional ("cried" or whatever you call it). I do care that the cable news pundits turned it into a sexist "girls are so weak" reason for Senator Clinton's victory.
2) If a Democrat exploits the fear of terrorism to, as Senator Obama says, "scare up votes," I'm going to call them on it with the same vigor as I call out Cheney and the Bush Republicans. If this means cannibalizing the party I usually support, then so be it. Just because it comes from a Democrat doesn't make it right -- or more American. And I'll be twice as hard on Senator Obama if he ever pulls the same stunt. But I don't think he will.

New Huffington Post Item
I have a new blog entry posted here.
And for the record... If Senator Clinton ultimately wins this nomination, I want to be able to support her with the same enthusiasm I have for Senator Obama right now. But if she pulls another Cheney-style "vote for the other guy and we'll be attacked" stunt, she'll make it very difficult for many of us to get behind her. In other words, I'm trying to do my part in keeping her honest. Just in case.

Rove Calls Senator Obama "Prissy"
Karl Rove on Senator Obama's "you're likeable enough" remark in the ABC debate (WARNING: link takes you to the awful CNS website):
"Obama, who was having a mediocre night in my opinion, rather than keeping his mouth shut proceeded to say, 'They like you well enough.' So, he looked like a smarmy, prissy little guy taking a slap at her. I think that helped her."
I'm wondering if there's something else that Karl has been trying to tell us all this time. Anyway, I almost didn't post this because, you know, Rove is so irrelevant now. It's kind of like Bob Saget popping up every once in a while and saying the word "c*nt" then disappearing again.

Bizarro Iraq
From Bizarro Iraq in which the surge didn't work:
BAGHDAD — Nine American soldiers were killed in the first two days of a new American drive to kill al-Qaida in Iraq fighters holed up in districts north of the capital, the U.S. military said Wednesday.
Six soldiers were killed and four were wounded Wednesday in a booby-trapped house in Diyala province, where joint U.S.-Iraqi forces were driving through a difficult web of lush palm and citrus groves, farmland and fertile river bottoms.
Which Republican candidates are still claiming the surge worked? I think all of them except Ron Paul.

Keeping Score
Because of the tight margin, Senators Clinton and Obama received the same number of delegates last night.
Clinton 9
Obama 9
Edwards 4
(h/t Oliver Willis)
UPDATE: Just to be clear, in the Democratic Party there are what's called "superdelegates" who aren't bound to the primary voting results. At this point, according to a CNN survey of nationwide superdelegates, Senator Clinton leads 183 to 78 in total delegates including superdelegates -- but Senator Obama leads in actual delegates with 25 over Senator Clinton's 24.
Here's the crazy thing... According to the CNN superdelegate survey count, combined with the actual delegates, Senator Obama WON New Hampshire, 12 delegates to Senator Clinton's 11. But the superdelegates could change their mind at any point. So we call it a tie in New Hampshire, 9 to 9.
Of course none of this matters because one of them will drop out of the race before the convention -- which is usually how it happens, giving the presumptive nominee the full convention support of the party. The American electoral system RULES.

New Hampshire Observations
11:26PM
Well that's it for tonight. Congratulations to the Clinton campaign. Seriously.
Something from Election Day 2004 applies to New Hampshire 2008: no matter what the polls say, the vote is the final word. For better or worse.
Also, 11:27PM... Olbermann talking with Howard Wolfson... Off camera, the weirdest sound ever. It sounded like Matthews choking on a pork chop bone.
--
11:05PM
Senator Clinton talking now. President Clinton and Chelsea on stage with her. And there it is... "comeback." First paragraph. I mean, all due respect, but how does one "come back" when they have President Clinton all over New Hampshire attacking Senator Obama? The expectation, therefore, should be the largest margin possible -- not a 3 percent squeaker.
Back to the talking. "Predatory student loan companies," she says randomly. Since when has this been a campaign issue? Senator Clinton trying to grab up some of Senator Obama's college support there.
--
11PM
The big theme: "YES WE CAN!" Senator Obama brings the roof down again. There is still a 3 percent margin and, I repeat, Senator Obama attained this margin even though a very popular ex-president attacked him every day of the last five. All of that said, hats off to Senator Clinton for this one.
--
10:40PM
Terry McCauliffe, Clinton's campaign chairman, is on MSNBC right now. Yep. The same old crew from four/eight/twelve/sixteen years ago. I wonder if Senator Clinton will accidentally declare victory over Tom Harkin.
--
10:33PM
I can't wait for "comeback kid" over and over and over and over. Even though it's entirely not true.
--
10:29PM
Still 39. 36 -- 5,092 vote difference. NBC calls it for Senator Clinton.
Based on the warp drive humming sound, FOX News is broadcasting from 10-Forward on the Enterprise-D.
--
10:12PM
Clinton 39
Obama 36
John Edwards is about to make with the talking. I was thinking... Edwards would be a most-excellent attorney general.
--
9:49PM
Clinton 39
Obama 37
I'm sick of the cable news people right now. So suck on this, Scarborough: Senator Obama is neck-and-neck with the former First Lady Hillary Clinton, and former President of the United States Bill Clinton who has attacked Senator Obama every day since Iowa. Yet... Senator Obama, who doesn't have an ex-president in his corner, is successfully overcoming huge odds here.
--
9:30PM
Clinton 39
Obama 36/37 (they keep changing it)
I wonder how Senator Clinton's Cheneytastic! Brand fearmongering played with NH voters.
--
9:20PM
Clinton 39% - 37,000-ish
Obama 36% - 34,000-ish
Senator McCain is talking right now. Every time I see Senator McCain I wonder how he doesn't seeth with anger knowing how the Bush people have screwed him and used him for eight years now. From the SC whisper campaign to the signing statement which nullified the McCain Amendment.

Senator Clinton Pulling Away
Last check as of 9:10PM EST:

NBC is still saying it's too close to call.
I gotta say, I won't be upset if Senator Obama doesn't win this one. The primaries are far from over. The only thing I'm dreading is the inevitable repeating of "comeback kid" over and over and over if Senator Clinton wins. It was awesome 16 years ago. Not so much 16 years later.

Huge Democratic Turnout...
...which is great, except for the fact that they're running out of ballots!
The New Hampshire Secretary of State's office is in the process of locating extra ballots to ship to towns that have expressed concern that supplies are running low. The concern is primarily on the Democratic side, officials say."The towns that are calling now are experiencing heavy turnout, and see their piles of ballots starting to drop at a rate faster than they're comfortable with," said Deputy Secretary of State Dave Scanlan. "They're also stating to us that it's the Democratic ballots that have them more concerned than the Republican ballots."
The warm weather has something to do with the turnout, but I can't imagine this kind of phenomenon happening if Senator Obama's name wasn't on those ballots.

Kristol Is As Kristol Does
In his first New York Times column, Bill Kristol quoted Michelle Malkin. If that wasn't awful enough, he misattributed the quote. The quote was actually written by Michael Medved. Greg Sargent:
In the column, Kristol quotes Michelle Malkin as follows:Still, as the conservative writer Michelle Malkin put it, “For the work-hard-to-get-ahead strivers who represent the heart and soul of the G.O.P., there are obvious, powerful points of identification.”Only Malkin is now claiming that she didn't write this. Instead, she notes, the quote actually comes from Michael Medved.

Battleship Fracas In The Persian Gulf
CNN:
U.S. military reports "significant confrontation" between 5 Iranian vessels and 3 U.S. naval ships in Persian Gulf. Details soon.
CNBC is also reporting this. If it's accurate, I'm going to be very sceptical about its veracity, i.e. Gulf of Tonkin. This sort of action is suicide for Iran and they have to know this. Why would they harass us?
UPDATE: It looks like no shots were fired. More like some ship-to-ship bird flipping.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route off the Iranian coast, over the weekend, CNN reported on Monday.Citing unidentified U.S. officials, CNN said the Iranian vessels came within 200 yards (meters) of the U.S. ships in international waters in the strait on Saturday, and U.S. sailors came close to opening fire.

New Video Of O'Reilly Stalking Senator Obama
John Amato has new video here.
STAFFER (or SECRET SERVICE): Sir, sir, you do not want to do that.O'REILLY: You sonofabitch. Yea, that’s really low class pal. That’s really low class. Everybody in the world can see it. Hey Senator, a word please? Senator, a word please? Senator, we came all the way to see you.
Low class?! Watching this new footage... It's clear that O'Reilly is stalking Senator Obama. If O'Reilly wanted to talk to the senator he could invite him on his awful show -- or funnel questions to one of the regular FNC pool reporters. O'Reilly isn't a reporter or a documentarian, therefore this tactic, which goes FAR beyond his personal MO (he usually sends interns to stalk people), is very simply the tactic of a stalker.
In other words, this isn't an ordinary citizen activist or filmmaker who doesn't have access and, hence, is taking extraordinary steps to demand answers from a public official. This is a man who has a nightly primetime talk show and an entire "news" organization at his disposal. So this can be nothing else than what it appears: a psychotic assault.
