145 Years Ago Tuesday

It was exactly 145 years and two days ago -- January 1, 1863 -- when another Illinoisan, President Abraham Lincoln, officially emancipated the slaves held in captivity in the secessionist states.

Unfortunately the Emancipation Proclamation was more of a symbolic gesture than anything else. Growing up in Texas I had a greater appreciation for Juneteeth, and still think it's the true watershed slavery moment in American history.
