What Would Mary Do?

Via Aravosis at AmericaBlog:

The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.

The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

Yes, America, we need school vouchers so that our tax dollars can fund misogynistic parochial jagoff factories like this one. And of course the namesake of the goddamn school -- Mary the Mother of God isn't in an authority position over men.

We are in America, right? The US?

This aspect of "religious freedom" is so far outside the bounds of logic and it never ceases to piss me off. If this parochial school wants to be included in the state-sanctioned arena, then they can temporarily shelve their misogynistic beliefs and adhere to what they damn-well signed up for! It seems like they go out of their way just to be confrontational about it.

And this isn't the first time the school has sided with misogyny:

In 2004, St. Mary’s chose to forfeit its football game against White City High School because White City had a girl on its roster. At the time, an official in the U.S. district office for the Society of St. Pius X told The Star, “We’re trying to form the boys to be gentlemen, and knocking a girl around on a football field is the furthest thing from that. … It’s not a game for girls, and not a game for boys to play against girls.”

I've always wanted to visit the 19th Century and here I find out it's just a few hours away in Topeka! That's awesome!

I honestly can't fathom how anyone in this day and age can hold such "beliefs." I guess I could understand it if this were the 17th or 18th century, but this is 2008, get with the program.

Oh Ashby, it seems to me that it's a lot easier to change the calendar than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the calendar so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view.

Who is this so called "living God" you refer to? Never met him.

Ashby: today's word-of-the-day is "sarcasm".
