Lou Dobbs: "Cotton -- ermm -- Politicians!"
Watch this. Then come back.
Okay, so here's what Lou Dobbs, Joe Scarborough, Pat Buchanan and way too many white Americans don't get: when Senator Obama urged a discussion about race in his Philadelphia Address, that DID NOT mean that white people have permission to say stupid racist things (like "cotton pickin' politicians") and expect to get away with it under the umbrella of this race discussion.
The senator DID NOT tell the nation's white people: go ahead and say dumb shit -- it's okay as long as we're talking about it. Wrong! Senator Obama's message was that we talk about why -- WHY white people say stupid racist things and WHY black people are angry about it (and slavery and Jim Crow and all the rest of it).
I've seen this misinterpretation on the very serious cable news day after day. I've seen it in comment threads from both left blogs and right blogs. Senator Obama's speech wasn't an invitation for white people to make racist remarks. Sorry.

I've thought about this one long and hard after watching some cable "news" Bob. Here's the conclusion that I came to.
No matter how hard people like you or myself attempt to point out the dumbassedness™ of these statements to people. They will NEVER get it in mass because the average American I.Q. is hovering around 95.
I'm going to wager a guess that it requires a little more brain power than people are willing to spend to realize the complexity and sensitivity of the situation.
However, the people making these remarks are VERY intelligent and I wouldn't dare say that they don't know what they're doing.
The Clinton camp started this whole argument about race and as the convention draws nearer they are going to continue to invest time and money into frightening white America and keeping the issue of race in the limelight.
But people like you and I are lending a helping hand, as well. By simply analyzing the situation and offering intelligent points of view we're providing talking points which I'm SURE will be used as ammunition in this ongoing war of words.

Note: Just want to point out that whenever I think of the individual candidates now I picture a guy giving a heart-warming speech that motivates people to make changes, a dinosaur flying a jet fighter and a tired old lady with a calculator.
(While the dinosaur is a cool mental image. It just doesn't seem very presidential to me. )
That's all. lol

I also had to give this some thought over the last hour or two since you posted this, Bob.
First thought that came to mind when I watched the clip was "You, Lou Dobbs, are an elitist-wannabe, closet-racist who just came out of the closet and a bloviating, insecure, jack-ass prick."
I think you nailed it just right, Bob. When Obama invited America to have a conversation, he had in his mind Americans opening up about race relations to move towards understanding the wounds and hopefully then moving on to healing the wounds.
I don't think he realized that what would occur would be the closet racists fucks coming out of the wood-work, but...wait... maybe he did. Now that I think about it, it's much easier to evaluate whether someone's racist if his or her guard is down and not worrying about "political correctness".
A little blah blah blah, if you don't mind...
Okay, let me also say this about what Ms Rice said in response to Obama's race speech. When I heard her talk about Europeans and Africans settling this country, Europeans by choice and Africans in chains, I thought how perfect, and when she called it the birth defect of our country, I believe she nailed it perfectly. And, this from Ms Rice. I confess I was surprised.
I appreciate MajinMal's humorous note at the end.
