The Tide Is Turning
Senator Obama wrote today's speech himself.
Remember all of those idealistic movies in which you kind of hoped that the fictional movie president was the real president? Yeah, it's kind of happening now -- in our time. And I can't think of anything more important we can do with our votes than to use them to turn the tide on an eight-year dark ride.

Its almost scary to think we might actually get a politician that we not only want, but that we actually need.
I went over to redstate.org today to see what their reaction to Obama's speech was. Needless to say there is a true division between Conservatives and Republicans. The true conservatives saw today's speech as a serious step forward and the Republicans thought he was blaming white people...typical I suppose, but sad.
The tide is truly changing...

Yeah, like every week of "The West Wing." Isn't it sad that the only real statesmen left are the ones written as fictional characters in movies and television shows? (or so I used to think...)
Honestly, though, that speech today was great. I agree that he single handedly changed the entire direction of the campaign. With a simple, heartfelt speech, he set a stark contrast between himself and the other two candidates for President.

My literal first thought at the end of the speech was, "I want this man to speak for me to the world." End of story.

I just wish that collective idiocy that has McCain ahead in the polls against Obama would wake up and get the message. How can ANYONE truly believe that John McCain is a rational choice for President? For one thing, he would just be setting his VP up for the presidency, because he'll either die or be declared incompetent before serving a four-year term.

As a Brit I can only say that Senator Obama makes me proud to be a human being. He simply takes politics to a new level. People talk about frothy content-free inspirational waffle (which is utterly ridiculous) -- will these same people see that he has made one of the most intelligent and subtle speeches of the modern era on one of the most incendiary and difficult of topics facing right into the eye of the storm.
I have been around a bit, and I really don't have time for vacuous waffle; I see very little of it here. It is a shame to see really intelligent commentators like Maureen Dowd fail to get it but many people seem to have.
We are very luck to have such a gracious and intelligent person in this race. Let's hope he succeeds; and if he does, that he doesn't sink under the weight of expectation. If he does succeed he may not just heal divisions withing the US but will create immense excitement in the rest of the world; he would be in a strong position to really lead the international community I think.
