On April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. In honor of that: the best of Shelby Foote.

Thank you. The last books I read before I left America were Foote's volumes on the Civil War. The man had compassion and humor to match his knowledge and perspective.
