Thanks, Republicans!

gas-price.jpg

This is what I paid yesterday at a Wawa. Today, at the same station, gas rose to $3.65.

For what it's worth, I drive a Prius and the tank is only 11 gallons or so -- plus, I get around 400-450 miles per tank. But holy shit, I can't imagine what you guys are paying per week to fuel a normal car. Share your horror stories in the comments...

Bob,
That was a cute entry, now let me tell you what a real man pays and drives. I drive the most manly car on the road, I know what your thinking...H2, right? Wrong, a 2007 VW Rabbit. In San Diego, CA I just paid $51 and some change...BOOYAH...Go Republicans...oh wait.

Here in Northern California (Bay Area), regular is running between 3.89 and 4.09 (saw that at a Vallero station in Oakland on Saturday). As for me...I'm in a Prius. It was under protest as I drove a 1993 Lexus SC300 5 spd. until December '07. I loved my Lex (my grandkids had named it "LadysLex")... but was increasingly unable to afford to drive it, and was also increasingly guilt ridden by the environmental impact of my heavy foot in my go-fast car! It ran on premium, and when premium began pushing $4/gal, I woke one day and the decision was made. Sold it and went with the Prius. I've gone from spending $75-100 a week on gas (I do a lot of driving), to $27-30 every 7 to 10 days... and it feels good to do my little part for the environment. Observation: the prius has a navigation system which includes an energy monitor. At any given time the driver can see the current mileage, and it's amazing to discover what a difference a tiny adjustment in the weight of one's foot on the accelerator can make, and knowing how much that extra 5 miles per hour really costs is sobering. If all cars, hybrid or not, incorporated some such system, I believe we would make huge gains in lowering energy consumption even in standard cars. Knowledge is power!!!

Same station, least expensive in my area: Monday am -$3.58; Monday pm - $3.64; Wednesday pm - 3.69; Thursday pm - 3.72. I have a '97 Saturn which gets between 35 & 40 MPG, and a small gas tank, so I'm getting hit by a relatively small increase once a week, but it's still shocking to see the numbers go up day after day.
Worse, tho, is home heating oil. I need it for hot water and the dealers all demand COD. Last time I had it delivered, it cost me $350 for 100 gals - today's quote $403 for 100 gals; $314.25 for 75 gals (4.19/gal); $225.50 for 50 gals ($4.51/gal). Luckily I'll have my $300 tax rebate check in a few weeks so I can help stimulate the economy!

Bob, you can save even more on gas - as can everyone else reading this - by filling up in the morning and never letting your tanks become less than half full. Sorry, I don't have my source right now, but it's been common knowledge to me for 30 years (since I started driving), the only thing my dad ever told me worth knowing about cars. But the reason is this: colder gas is denser. You actually get MORE gas when it's freezing cold.

You read my mind, Bob. I was going to fill up yesterday and after choking on seeing the gas price on the pump, I decided to stop filling at $40. I decided to take a picture and post it (you beat me to it). Here's what I paid.

$3.99 and has been rising about 10 cents every two weeks. Unfortunately up here in Alaska, we have a lot of months of snow and poor driving conditions and most people drive trucks or SUV's with 4-wheel-drive.

I would simply stop driving if it were possible, I really would.

I work in the human services field, I am a social worker for kids with Developmental Disorders. I have to drive about 400 miles/week around Monroe County (New York). We get reimbursed for our mileage, but the rate is only negotiated in January when we do our budget, so as gas prices go up, I continue to get the same amount reimbursed per mile.

If I wasnt doing such a worth while job, I would simply quit and find something I could do more locally.

Right Friction, the ground has been cooled during the night and the gas is more dense in the morning. My dad gave me the same information when I first got my car too.

You guys hung in there a lot longer than I did. I let go of my car back in 2003 when gas hit $1.75/gallon. I had a Geo Storm (no laughing) with a small tank (that I could take right to the edge of 400 miles) and that price was too much for me. Since then I've biked, bused or walked to wherever I've needed to.

Its about 3.55-3.35 from what I see here in Metro Detroit

I have a 2004 Sebring and its $40+ to fill my tank

i live on the big island in hawaii - costco has the lowest prices on the island: $3.79, but if you can't afford a costco membership, unleaded is around $3.92 at most stations. diesel is $4.00 and up.

after being laid off from my job at a national biodiesel startup (which was forced to close due to skyrocketing feedstock prices) i'm now commuting 60 miles roundtrip to my new job. i drive a 92 camry and it's around $45-50 to fill my tank each week...

I guess, in a way, I'm lucky when it comes to gas prices. I retired in 06, and my driving went down quite a bit (I was commuting about 30 mins each way). Then, this year, I got sick and I only drive about once or twice a week, and that only to the grocery store, etc. Even though I have a full-size Chevy Silverado, with a V-8 engine, I'm only spending about 25-30 dollars every 2 weeks.

Sometimes illness can pay off! (and I've lost about 40 pounds in the process, too!)

I paid 3.35/gal today, but I recall last week seeing the price jump from 2.90 to 3.25 in one day -- ugh!

I drive an Xterra and my current contract is a hospital 35 miles away -- however I only go once or twice a week, so it's not too bad. I considered a Prius when looking for a new car, but my harp wouldn't fit (nor my son's carseat - ah, and then try fitting both in together!) and since I can't work without my instrument, I needed something a little bigger. A shame there weren't more hybrid choices a couple of years ago.

I'm walking whenever possible. When I do drive, I take it slow (as Lex above me noted, it helps), but my laid-back attitude bugs the *%$!@^& outta some drivers, hahaha. If I had my druthers, I'd ride a horse. I'm a born and bred hippophile. :D

I bought $40 worth of gas in Los Angeles yesterday and I got about 9.5 gallons. It takes $100 to fill my tank. I think.

I have a turbo Jetta, but I get laid off a lot. Under 60k in over 5 years! Filled up today at 3.42 in Roseville, so, Pay Day mission accomplished! I can keep going to work! Are noodles still cheaper than rice?

Posted by: MelodyMaker [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 26, 2008 01:39 AM

I drive a Jetta TDI diesel. I'm paying $4.39+ a gallon right now. Ironically, when I bought the car, I was paying about $0.25 LESS a gallon than regular gas. Now it's $0.80 MORE. If you want to know why food prices are increasing, it's because the cost of diesel fuel is out of control.

Thankfully I can buy B20 biodiesel in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the same cost as regular diesel. AND I get 47 miles per gallon. I can get 650 miles on a tank of gas.

Michigan?? Doesn't diesel thicken up in the winter? It's selling for over $4.50 a gallon here in CT.
And I'm noticing a lot of folks with for sale signs on their SUVs.
