Kentucky Is Redneck For "Whitey"

The New Yorker:

“I really don’t want an African-American as President. Race.”

What about race?

“I thought about it. I think he would put too many minorities in positions over the white race. That’s my opinion. After 1964, you saw what the South did.” He meant that it went Republican. “Now what caused that? Race. There’s a lot of white people that just wouldn’t vote for a colored person. Especially older people. They know what happened in the sixties. Under thirty—they don’t remember. I do. I was here.”

The guy who said this is a Democrat. Think about this thing. Kentucky Democrats would rather vote for more wars and a shitty economy, rather than to vote for a fellow Democrat -- who happens to be black. That's remarkable to me. Not surprising, necessarily. But definitely educational.

Why do you think until very recently almost everyone one I know was a proud Independent? Like most places, there are a lot of stupid assholes here, many of them are registered Democrats. We still have a huge racial divide in Louisville, and we're supposed to be the "liberal" city, which is complete crap. We still had busing issues in the mid-fucking-seventies, for fuck's sake.

This state is a prototype of how to allow corrupt governments and corporations run the local and state governments. Ignorance is cherished and deliberately passed in some parts of the state.

However slowly (at least while I am forced to live here), we're trying to change that. We think we can get KY to go blue in November, and McConnell out, we really believe that. Obama has helped get everybody organized and ready to march forward into battle the stupidity and apathy.
