It Won't Be Mark Warner
VA-SENATE
Warner (D) 57%, Gilmore (R) 32%
To snatch him up for Senator Obama's VP slot would be a major loss in the effort to lock in a solid Senate majority. Already we're losing two seats... Senator Lieberman (for what he's worth) is likely going to caucus with the Republicans following the RNC. And of course Senator Obama will hopefully be vacating his seat. Losing candidate Warner (or Senators Webb or Clinton for that matter) would be a huge mistake.
That makes me think governor or general: Governor Sebelius or Rendell. Or General Clark. Place your bets, but if I were to put money on this, I'd go with Governor Sebelius. Rendell isn't really a solid successor in 2016. General Clark's so-called "gaffe" might have hurt his chances, and he doesn't bring a political machine to the table.

Comments
I hate to be this guy, but Rendell and Sebeilus are both DLC drones. Also Rendell looks like the living embodiment of the term "politician".
Word on the street is that the Obama people think Clark is toxic because of his comments on McCain's POW stint.
At this stage I think it might be a dark horse candidate of some kind. And if it's Hillary I completely give up.

Does Clark carry any of the Clinton machine with him?
Evan Bayh is the strong favorite right now at betfair.com, which accurately predicted every single primary, at 5-1. Clinton, Sebelius, and Joe Biden also have pretty good odds. Edwards and Tim Kaine are also under 10-1. Everybody else is a longer shot than that. Clark's at 18-1, which makes me think that he might be worth putting ten quid on.
I think Bayh's probably the most realistic bet right now, though. That family's been waiting for a table at this restaurant for a long time.

Bayh is a terrible choice for a laundry list of reasons.

Evan Bayh is the white Harold Ford.

I do not like Rendell. Ick. Puke. Gag.

For what is worth. Rendell did get some progressive things done last month with the Clean Air Bill and the Autism Bill. Late on July 3rd, Colon Cancer Screening was added to the Autism Bill. He does have a machine.
Negatives - How far will "Bonusgate" go? Tolling on I-80 and he seemed to skate pretty easy from the storm that locked up the interstates.

What about the Jack Reed rumors? I don't know much about him and am researching as I write this. Does anyone have an opinion on him?

I'll put $2 on Hagel...

NO to Chuck Hagel. We have a huge pool of qualified candidates in the Democratic party. We don't need someone from the GOP just because he agrees with us on one issue.
Carl - here's a site to help with your research.

Yeah- Chuck Hagel is a non-starter. I've heard recently that he's like McCain in that he has this reputation of speaking against the administration then votes right along with every thing they want.
Ya know, Obama could just wait patiently. Right now the McCain people are ready to pounce on whoever he chooses with their usual brand of lies and smear, but it may be better to wait until closer to the convention. Obama has not made an easy target for them. By remaining the only target, he can continue to run McCain into the ground then pick a VP when there is little time for them to campaign against his pick.
And Harold Ford? I'd rather see him pick Hillary Clinton.
