Obama Defends His Progressivism

Senator Obama in North Carolina:

“Look, let me talk about the broader issue, this whole notion that I am shifting to the center,” he said. “The people who say this apparently haven’t been listening to me.”

To this, he adds, parenthetically: “And I must say some of this is my friends on the left” and those in the media.

“I am someone who is no doubt progressive,” he said...

And he adds...

Voters should understand, he said, that they rarely will find themselves in 100 percent agreement with him. “But don’t assume that’s because I’m just doing it for “political reasons, he said.

“That just means we disagree,” he said.

I don't recall another election in which so many voters decided to stay at home or vote for a third-party just because they disagree with the nominee on a couple of issues. Or maybe there aren't many -- they're just louder this year. I don't know which it is yet.

I think it is hard to be more progressive than THIS: http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/listening/

Say what you want, but Obama opening up the government to the people is exactly what I want to see.

I kind of wish he had said *free* college for everyone instead of "affordable". Saying is all.

I think the drop-out numbers will slide dramatically come November. Right now it's threats, some from Clinton people and some from disappointed Obama fans who just learned that he won't buy 'em a new bike and tuck them in at night. But they'll come around. Nader was polling at 8% this time in 2000, and he pulled less than 3% nationwide in the end. But Obama's got a harder road than Kerry did in wooing the apathetic left, because George Bush was such an effective galvanizer. Fortunately, those people are an itty-bitty part of the electorate. Kreskin says Ralph Nader takes somewhere less than a point and a half from the top, and the no-shows either have their enthusiasm rekindled, or hold their noses and pull the lever anyway.

Meanwhile, I'm with Obama on "disagreement" rather than "pandering". I wasn't a couple weeks ago, but I really respect that he directly addressed his supporters like grown-ups over FISA.
