Observations

Based on the Huffington Post comments under my new post...

1) There are still plenty of Senator Clinton people who are hoping for an Obama FAIL.
2) Someone employed the tired old "lesser of two evils" line. So very Election 2000 of them.
3) There are too many people who think Senator Obama isn't a smart man.
4) This current Summer is awesome!
5) Too many Democrats are accepting far-right or corporate media frames as reality.

What has happened to the Huffington post? For the last six months or so it has been overrun with idiot commenters who are clearly waiting to be handed a megaphone in the town square. I love how everyone seems to think they're smarter and know better than one of the most stable/capable campaigns we've ever seen. I love how they think they know what is going on with intent and long range plans, and that they should just let us (and McCain and his media) know everything that’s going on inside their heads in JUNE. I understand that people are frustrated, but cutting off the head of your candidate isn't going to help a damn thing. You can pressure them and voice displeasure without taking him down a few notches, or discounting an entire campaign. Jesus, we are such a selfish-self centered nation, even on the left. “Throwing Clark under a bus?” Ever think that was coordinated? Maybe it wasn’t, but my point is, how the fuck would you know? I am an independent/progressive minded person, but I never thought that we could, or should, force Obama to come out as a progressive in this particular election cycle because I WANT HIM TO GET ELECTED! There are, unfortunately, many Clinton supporters we're going to have to ask to shut the fuck up with their “Ah-ha!” every time Obama does/says something they don't understand, especially since he hasn't done anything that she wouldn't have done (which sucks), and as she had a hard time just saying the word “gay” in the primaries, I doubt she'd be outwardly supporting gay marriage in CA. All I'm saying is people, get the fuck over yourselves, this is still American politics. He doesn't have a magic wand to immediately cause change in the way things are carried out in this country, and if you thought it was going to be a smooth ride to the White House by shouting progressive attitudes and inclinations, loud and proud, you're not only delusional, you should grow up and stop watching cable news (or only reading blogs that only reinforce your opinions). The hope is Obama makes that progressive world a possibility, but he has to get elected first.

I hate the "lesser of two evils" shtick. It wasn't true in 2000 and it's not true now. Frankly, some of the comments I have been reading at places like HuffPo and DailyKOS have been very immature, unhelpful and, in certain cases, playing into right wing talking points. It's one thing to criticize, it's another to just rant and rave.

I think a lot of the commenters are young & they've never been this involved in following a presidential campaign. (which is not meant as an insult in any way, shape, or form! It's fantastic that so many new voters are pumped for this election) They don't get that there isn't ever going to be a candidate that agrees 100% of the time with your own views, so you go with the one who agrees with you on the important stuff most often. Idealism is a crappy thing to lose, but hopefully they won't get to the point where they lose interest in campaigns on the expectation of being disappointed or don't vote.
AND, there are a number of people who post the same shit on every thread, either because they are idiots who love to rile up others or because they're paid to do it.

That could be true ceu. I am a young voter (well, youngish) but then again I have been following politics for a while and I live in a very political family. But it's discouraging when you see somebody like Markos basically calling Obama a coward (he didn't use the word, but it was implied) on the front page of Dailykos. How is that going to help him get elected. Again, I'm not one of those people who think we can't criticize Obama, but there's a line between criticizing and potentially harming the candidate.

Now this is depressing (some of the commenters).

I completely agree with you lnbno13

Its amazing how people work and are unwilling to yield to compromise and really understand what the man has said....if he went against his own opinion of it that would be pandering and the would be no better than Clinton or McCain

And it is very true that those on HuffPo which were staunchly for Obama turned so quickly, on one issue. He doesn't need fair weather supporters and he's not going to be one group's candidate, he's trying to become president of the united states, not president of their social club. He will not always agree with our tactics and we won't always agree with his, but he feels his decision is whats best for the country and they haven't even voted yet! Let him try to get the immunity out before you call for his head!

Being a person of a "certain" age, I remember what it was like during the 60's. We were very impatient for change, and for doing away with what we thought was very wrong about America.

Well, guess what? It is virtually impossible to change things in a flash. You have to work at it, and take small steps. You have to be committed to the long haul. You can't expect to put in an effort for a short time, and think, "Well, gee, that's done, now we can party and celebrate how wonderful we all are."

I think too many folks are ready to work, but not ready to work for very long. They want what too many have wanted for too long - instant gratification. Wake up - it's not gonna happen that way. Things didn't change overnight for the 60's generation, but things did change. Not enough, but it was a start, and now is the time to make that start into a continuation of improvement. Don't lose heart; don't give up hope!
