The McBuschies Stole Our Laughter
And now we're humorless fussbudgets!
Maureen Dowd on the New Yorker cover:
At first blush, it would seem to be a positive for Obama that he is hard to mock. But on second thought, is it another sign that he’s trying so hard to be perfect that it’s stultifying? Or that eight years of W. and Cheney have robbed Democratic voters of their sense of humor?
Yes, cartoons are funny regardless of whether they're funny. Like this one and this one, for instance. Can't find the funny in those either. So maybe Dowd is right. The McBuschies stole our laughter!
Meanwhile, when I wrote this week that the cover should've instead satirized a redneck repeating the Muslim rumors... I had no idea there was a real guy like that:
Help me, Dowd! I'm still looking for the funny in this:
"Both if we could. HAR-HAR-HEH-HEH." Can't find the funny there either. Snap. Dowd's right.
UPDATE: That guy appears to be for real.

..."eight years of W. and Cheney have robbed Democratic voters of their sense of humor?"
Not robbed, exactly. They robbed us of our country, our human rights, our reputation in the world, our Constitution. Sense of humor was somehow misplaced along the way.

>>Sense of humor was somehow misplaced along the way.
Jeez, I hope not. I was kind of kidding with the headline.

Christ. That "Missouri Military" troglodyte makes me ashamed to be from Missouri. To be fair - to me - I'm from St. Louis which, while technically within the Missouri border, is light years (mostly) from where that guy probably lives. Don't judge us all based on that freak....

Are we sure that the redneck moron isn't satire?
Can someone really be THAT stupid?

That is a masterful attempt to strike up netroots support for John McCain, no matter how aweful he may be. Targeted at the religious right and the Ron Paul followers, both voting blocs currently "sitting it out". McCain needs these folks, and rather than ask for their support (which would get him in hot water with his already unstable base), someone's gone out and crafted this gem. Osama/Obama , Osama/Obama , you're getting sleepy.
How many deep south sh*t shovelling farmers do you know that shower & shave at the end of the day before sitting down to video blog?
It's not real, it's not satire, it's just a sad campaign strategy for an ideologically bankrupt candidate.

AHAHAHAHAHA! He's priceless! I always thought "central casting" was a racist cliche', but when the long-awaited sequel to The Dukes of Hazzard finally hits the Megaplex, ya'll elitist East Coast Liberal book-learnin Nazi shitheads gonna be reeeal sorry when the part of "Cletus #2" is played by some out-of-work New York stage actor because this guy was busy that day shooting hisself a YouTube picture-show. AHAHAHAHAHA!
But seriously folks.
A) There's no way that Country Fried Fuckhole is for real, he's a clever DNC plant to gin up sympathy for Obama via the old political formula known as The Cooter Principle ("In a Society, Every Inbred Shit-Shoveling Fuckstick Tends to Display His Level of Incompetence via The YouTubes"); the idea is that Democrats will take this clever ruse seriously and mobilize its base in opposition to The Cooter in question, while morbidly-embarrassed Republicans (there are currently 7 registered Republicans capable of "humiliation" and they all live in Wisconsin; there were millions in Texas but after Katrina they all registered as Independents) will flock to Obama's banner just to disassociate themselves with said Cooter once and for all.
B) Quoting this Rhodes Scholar of the Rhubarb Patch (and believe me, it pained my sensitive and well-read ear to have to Zapruder the thing enough to understand it): “But...I don’ in particular have innythang agins a blanket abuh-buh-bout Mos-lums.” Now, help me out here, Bob Cesca: Did I miss some turrfyin attack by The Mos-lums in which blankets were deployed agin’ us in sum way? I do recall being angry at Afghans for quite some time, just not Mos-lum blankets*. The Afghan thing was fine, though; far as I know we wrapped that war up without incident and sent all those troops home back in 2002.
* Comedy of this sort of sophistication ain’t easy folks, so if it felt like I had to go a long fucking way for this one joke, you can suck it with tartar sauce. Mrs. Dingeldein thought it was “a hoot.”

My favourite quote was, "You make some very interesting points. By the way, you look really familiar, were we at Oxford together? Class of 2003?" These people are lost causes. They scare me.

Having snarked on Forest Gump up there earlier, I'm going to jump in here and make a Big Fat Point to assuage my guilty conscience.
It's easy to make fun of Rainman Ofortutu (his YouTube account name, also "Rainman0422"), he makes himself an exceedingly large and preposterous target. I think he knows it, too. I also don't think he's in any way acting a part to boost his viewship on The YouTubes. That he's a gump and a Texan (those things are fairly redundant labels, really) should not, by themselves, be cause to mock and deride him. Mea culpa, mea culpa, etc. I'm Jewish, I have no idea what those words mean, but anywho.
But I have a perfectly good reason to scoff at Mr. Ofortutu here, and it is this: The critical factor at work isn't the Har-Har Ain't Rednecks Funny lietmotif that makes them such easy targets, it's the absurd disconnect between the message and its messenger. Being Internet-savvy enough to operate The YouTubes successfully suggests a 21st Century media acuity entirely sufficient to the task of being well-educated in our presidential candidates. Rainman Ofortutu wasn't some Man on the Street, randomly interviewed with such strange and alien technology as a digital recorder or HandyCam, he self-digitized his opinion and posted it for the world to see. That level of media know-how all but demands a reasonable absorption of Real News, and its fair and balanced analysis. But this is the American Media Consumer of the New Millennium, I'm afraid: Literally all the world at your fingertips, and so narrow a view through which it is filtered.
Put simply, the Gump on the Street has a defensible position from which to be willfully ignorant. The self-digitizing YouTube Caveman does not.
Discuss.

But, my esteemed Elvis, that's exactly what is so scary about these types: they aren't all hopelessly, terminally ignorant or stupid. They are capable, intelligent (to a degree) and knowledgeable. They just choose to be prejudiced, and to voice their bigoted opinions to the masses.
Many, many racists are not stupid or uninformed. Many, many neocons are highly intelligent. For whatever reasons, they want to sway others to this point of view, usually out of a desire to keep someone else down for their own gain. The true victims of their propaganda are the people to whom they preach their messages of hate. If they are successful, those victims continue to vote against their own interests and well-being, usually for the profit of the propagandists.
Be afraid, be very afraid.
