Gergen!
Thank you, sir. A very serious Washington insider gets it right. When will the rest of the barbecue media wise up and figure out that Senator McCain is using race to try to scare white people?

I think Gergen's missing the larger point in the "the One" ad. I have a strong Southern background, and the ad itself is code, to me at least, for the anti-christ. Using words like "anointed" and "can you see the light?" does a lot more to further the notion that he's the anti-christ than to push the theme that he's "uppity."
The book of revelations mentions the anti-christ as a "major world figure millions will flock to, who will give false hope and false promises, and will rise to lead the world." (that's paraphrased btw, can't remember the exact quotes, but they are out there.)
Trust me, this is 20 years of Southern Baptist upbringing talking. The viral e-mails are already out there.
Of course, the good news is, if the end-times believers actually believe him to be the anti-christ, then they'll probably vote for him. I know that sounds crazy, but these people want the rapture to happen, so if electing Obama president will cause the Armageddon, they'll do anything they can to make it happen.
It's ridiculous, I know, but these people are out there.

ConstanceRifle, fucking amazing insight. And you're right, if Southern Baptists believe he's the Anti-Christ they'll vote for him to watch us "unbelievers" burn in a lake of fire. Ah, Christianity: based on peace and love - and don't forget burning. Lots of burning.
That aside, nice to see Gergen pointing it out to the barbecue crowd that "Hey, McCain's campaign knows exactly what they're doing and are hedging their bets on good ol' fashioned American racism."
