The Real McCain

Frank Rich:

So why isn’t Obama romping? The obvious answer — and both the excessively genteel Obama campaign and a too-compliant press bear responsibility for it — is that the public doesn’t know who on earth John McCain is. The most revealing poll this month by far is the Pew Research Center survey finding that 48 percent of Americans feel they’re “hearing too much” about Obama. Pew found that only 26 percent feel that way about McCain, and that nearly 4 in 10 Americans feel they hear too little about him. It’s past time for that pressing educational need to be met.

So... when? When will the barbecue media report things like McCain calling Saakashvili "his good friend" while repeatedly mispronouncing his name in a speech? When will the corporate media report that McCain cheated in Saturday night's CNN religious test? When will we hear about McCain's exotic background?

Stupid questions. They won't report this stuff because they've been bought off with dirty jokes, war stories and tasty burgers.

I want to break something every time I hear the BBQ media say, "Why isn't Senator Obama ahead by more."

Yes, Mr. Obama has not hit McCain hard enough, but it is the way this race is being framed--they are simply not covering McCains (gaffe laden) stance on the issues, and what EXCATLKY a McCain Presidency will bring in so far as the ISSUES are concerned.

This "why can't he close" mantra is so intellectually dishonest--he is not ahead by more because the media has framed the race in such a way that it is the "questionable candidate" vs. "the mavricky war hero"--issues be damned.

I have to say, I do think Obama did better in the Warren summit because even if he chipped away at 1%, it is a win for him--it was so clear he was comfortable with his faith and expressing it as such. McCain's stump speech was delivered well, but it seemed OFF POINT, and not only did he LIE (cone of silence reference, "listening through the wall"), but he didn't answer certain questions--"what is rich?" I was struck by how polished he sounded in his answers--regardless, of whether he heard some questions or not--he lied on TV--BOLD FACED. I hope Rick Warren, a very fair and decent man, who conducted himself incredibly well throughout--will address this on Larry King and just give us an answer--was he there, was he not there...

Does the media not understand the mess we're in is a DIRECT consequence of peering through George Bush's "black and white" prism? How is nuance a bad thing--Shame on them--their NUANCE-LESS cheerleading before the war is one of the major reasons we are where we are, and yet they still haven't learned.

My heart still believes there will be a large electoral college margin for Obama, but my head says that if the media continues down this path, we will have four more years of George Bush.
