Why Can't He Close The Deal?

In 1980, there was rampant inflation, unemployment, a gas crisis, a hostage crisis, a Cold War with the Soviets, a boycotted Olympics and what was generally considered to be "malaise." Very, very unpopular president whose approval poll numbers were in the 20s.

And the final Gallup poll prior to the election was: Reagan 47, Carter 44. Three points. Of course Reagan won that election in a landslide.

I wonder if concern trolls on TV complained: Why can't Reagan close the deal?

Other similarities to 1980 here.

And a landslide is the only way Obama can win. Otherwise, Rove et. al. will steal the election for the third time running.

Why aren't Democrats fighting tooth and nail against Diebold? That's what I don't get.

Something we have this cycle that we didn't before is a huge increase in voter registration for the Democrats. It started in the primaries and is continuing into the general. At the same time, Republican registrations is on the decline. These are people that are never polled (the polls go for people who have voted before).

Another interesting factor is how the pollsters are so far behind the times in society and technology. A large portion of people under the age of 40 don't own land lines anymore, they just use cell phones. The pollsters only call land lines.

Also - the Republican consider Obama an "unknown", so shouldn't McCain, the man who has spent decades in the national spotlight, be crushing Obama? I wonder why the pundits don't ever ask that question.
