WTF?

By way of a follow-up to yesterday's Hawaii post, Digby reports:

Cokie Roberts said today that Obama shouldn't be going on vacation anywhere that has the "look of a foreign exotic place" and should go to Myrtle Beach instead. Apparently, Hawaii isn't quite American enough for Cokie and her provincial pals in the beltway, even though it's one of the 50 states.

It's weird... This is precisely the kind of thing that literally ENRAGES me about the barbecue media. You and I aren't taken seriously -- exclusively because we're creatures of the "unserious" intertubes. Yet very serious goons like Cokie Roberts are taken for wise old wizards despite crapola like "Hawaii is too exotic for the exotic black candidate."

However, it could've been worse. Roberts could've suggested Walley World.

Roberts is one of the reasons I stopped watching his Sunday show.

Dude was born there..What's the effing problem??? It's like I can't go back to CT from VA because it's "prettier". Get the Fucc outta here!

Myrtle Beach? I was in Myrtle Beach three weeks ago and there was not a single hotel we stayed in along the way (TN and SC) that even had MSNBC. You better believe they all had Fox News though. Everyone asked why isn't Obama doing better? Because people like Roberts continue to talk this nonsense about him and because there are a lot of people who don't hear the other side of the Fox News argument. Keep up the good work, love the site.

I hear you on the WTF. Heaven forbid Obama wants to spend some time with his, yanno, grandmother.

Myrtle Beach? That's truly a nightmare of a vacation destination.

I live about 4 hours from Myrtle Beach, and I suppose it's considered "more American" because rednecks and hookers hang out there? Good Lord, the people in the media are such idiots these days.

Didn't we once see a picture of him here being indoctrinated into his exotic and foreign proclivities on the beach with his grandfather? Scary!

By the way, I've always liked Cokie Roberts, but I'm willing to bet she wouldn't be caught dead vacationing in Myrtle Beach...

I live on the Big Island; and it really is getting offensive that somehow we are not American because we live on a friggin island. But, I worked in a local style diner for a long time and it never failed that some older (60ish) mid-west tourist would ask if their "American" money would do or did they have to go to the bank and get Hawaiian dollars.

Ohia! Please don't tell me you passed up the chance to "exchange" tourist $'s for some Hawaiian money!!! Dude I'll totally make something in Photoshop for you to print out...

I'm sorry, but you simply cannot hang the word "exotic" on any place wherein The Brady Bunch has vacationed. These were Middle-American cracker-asses of the Whiteyist, Wonder-Breadiest stripe and if they could vacation there on what was left of Mike's salary after Jan's crippling optometry and orthodontia expenses, Marsha's endless plastic surgery bills, speech therapy lessons for Thindy, the Betty Ford Clinic for Carol (oh like you didn't know she was strung out on The Heroin!), guitar lessons, beauty parlor perm sprees and almost daily penicillin shots for Greg, and the $600 a week that bitch Alice extorted from Mike to keep him safely in the closet after she walked in on him and Sam The Butcher playing Hide The Salami, then anyone can vacation there without fear of being labeled an elitist.

And yet the supposed liberal MSM seemed to miss an obviously impaired Bush comment about Russia invading Russia's capital just moments ago.

Please Bob check out Bush's recent statement!

Be the first to nail that ass patting drunken jerk!

OK, just heard it again. Russia is trying to depose Russia's democratically elected government"!

That's the leader of our nation!

What a boob!

I must admit when I first heard Cokie speaking I knew, since I had saw her on Sunday, that she was going to press that same theme. Last time I checked, visiting one's elderly guardian showed character. But of course with our talking heads what's up is down and what's down is up. I've demoted all of the talking heads (exception Olbermann, Maddow & Cafferty) into three words: "blah, blah, blah."

Has anyone noticed the pattern of McCain bungling statements just as bad as Bush? I mean our president makes sure the world at large knows he had a C average: "Russia invading Russia."

It's getting really tiresome to hear these entrenched Washington types telling us what us "regular" and "working-class" people care about. These stereotypes are every bit as demeaning and insulting as those against blacks, Jews, etc. Between them, my (very blue-collar)parents have voted for president 17 times and they claim to have never once voted for a candidate on the basis of his vacation choices, bowling prowess, or whether on not he ordered orange juice at a diner.
