Incompetence We Can Believe In
I think the pivot on the Palin issue needs to be in the direction of McCain's incompetence and his obvious inability to make important, serious decisions. For example:
But as the Palin pick turns 72 hours old, McCain's campaign is learning as much about her from the media and from Democrats as they are from what minimal political preparation they had. [...]Likewise, though she cut taxes as mayor of Wassila, she raised the sales tax, making her hardly a tax cutter. [...]
They did not know that she took trips as the mayor of Wasilla to beg for earmarks.
They did not know that she told a television interviewer this summer that she did not fully understand what it is that a vice president does.
WHOOPSIE DAISY! Oh well. McCain is only running for president and this is only the most important presidential decision he'll make before November. What-everrrr!
I've said publicly (online and on The Young Turks) that McCain is worse than Bush. And if the Palin selection is any indication, a "President" McCain would be equally if not more incompetent.

With the annoucement of Sarah's daughters pregnancy to dispel the rumors that her own 5th child was actually her daughter's (plus everything posted above), I expect her to drop out within the next 48 hours.
Anyone willing to post a wager on this? I think a nice summer seasonal brew would be good stakes.

Hey Cowboy,
I will bet you she doesn't last 48 hours. I give by this time tomorrow she will be making a press conference to announce her withdrawal. In the words of Steve Doocy: THIS. IS. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE!
She is done. The forks are already coming out. This is what happens when you bring a kid from the farm team to the big leagues. She was not ready.
How is she going to appeal to rabbid pro-life, anti-birth control, anti-premarital sex crowd with an unmarried 17 year old pregnant daughter. Bye bye Sarah we hardly knew ya.

I have a feeling the press will turn on this pick (and some are already starting to do so)--there is just too much out there--inconsistencies, lies, and at the end of the day it really goes to McCain's judgment. I hoenstly see a narrative emerging from all of this--"where is the REAL McCain--or rather, who is the REAL McCain.
Also, when will she do her first interview? Something tells me it will either be on the Falafel Hour or Hannity--and once the storm passes (with hopefully minimal damage), will the media pound away at the smoke and mirrors absence of Bush and Cheney--

Do you think it's possible she'll withdraw before her scheduled speech to the RNC?
I've felt pretty much since her nomination was announced that it wouldn't stand, but her withdrawal would highlight what a horrible choice she was in the first place so that McCain would resist her dropping out.

Hey guys, looks like abstinence-only really works!

Good question ceu. The thing about it though is that if she stays in the race, it is going to get very ugly for her; way too many bones in the closet.
What would be the alternative? Allow her to stay in and get shredded?
I'm also wondering how Sarah will extol the virtues of abstinence-only sex education when her unmarried daughter has two (I mean one) kids.

wow--train wreck--I had been reading about the "trigg" contrvoversey, and it does seem odd--this makes it even more odd. This is only goiung to get worse--plus it really opens up the abstinence only issue as well--and contraception issue. I have never understood the religious right is so against contraception and sex ed when it would REDUCE the number of abortions in this country.
If she does drop out, I really hope McCain gets hammered for this, and not just able to sweep it under the rug with another pick. I just hope we don't end up with Ridge--that would concern me.

Yeah, the Ridge thing could be a problem.
But how would McCain now explain his pro-life position by picking someone pro-choice? And would his handler's approve - Rush, et al?
Flip-flop-flip-flop-flip-flop...
That's leadership you can believe in.

As I posted a few days ago here at the goddamn awesome blog, she'll make it through the convention and the hurricanes and then drop out. At that point, someone like Petreaus will step in because his country needs him and that story will swallow weeks of news cycles. It will over shadow McCain's ridiculous gimmick of choosing Palin in the first place. The MSM will repeat the Repub talking points ad nauseam and say hello to President McCain.
Okay, I posted it at someone else's urging, but it's looking more and more accurate as the real Palin is uncovered.

This woman is just the gift that keeps on giving. Seriously, guys, when was the last time you laughed this much?
Let's get this used-to-be-a-hurricane news off the air so we can move onto the pregnant teenage daughter of the abstinence-only mom

Ugh...camel, what a scary thought as it sounds plausible.
Short attention spans will forgive McCain his initial lack of judgement due to the awesomeness of Patreus and war.

This so points to McCains deficiencies in judgement. As the mother-in-law of two wonderful young people who had children first, then waited and married later (all doing fine) I hope that these two new parents will not be forced into marrying before they are ready. It would be terrible if a decision this important is made for political reasons.
McCain and his team really screwed this up big time.

Question: isn't it still possible that both babys are Bristol's--? We do not know conclusively how far along Bristol is? I know this is a private matter (and Bob, feel free to delete my post if you think it's going in a trashy direction), but exactly how does this prove that Trigg is Sara's baby?
I really hope this underscores for everyone what a Mccain presidency will look like--Bush was an incurious slave to the hardcore ideologues that used him as a puppet. McCain is a hot head, flip flopper, that makes huge decisions without any regard for governance or the country. Which is worse?

Midad, the report is that Palin's daughter and Levi, the baby's father, are planning to marry:
"...As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support."
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child..."

I admit, I blew off the baby momma thing at first ... but I'm definitely coming around. Nothing I like more than a nice, juicy, "Christian" hypocrite. The whole thing makes me think of that scene from the film Chinatown, where Nicholson is trying to get Dunaway to 'fess up about her supposed-sister's parentage. "She's my sister." *slap* She's my daughter! *slap* "She's my sister AND my daughter!" *slap slap*

Wait, ceu ... wot? The daughter is knocked up and getting married?? That whirring sound you hear? My head spinning on its axis.

From a campaign statement...
"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement."
So...that implies that she had a 'choice', right? Maybe I'm reading too much into this.

She's 17, for heaven's sake! Would any of us wish this type of national exposure of intensely personal events on our children?? WTF was Palin thinking when she accepted McCain's offer? Did she not realize that she was putting her child's life into the public domain? Serious lack of judgement going on there...IMO.
And have I mentioned lately that I hate fucking typekey??

Exactly Cowboy...McCain picks Palin, bad judgement..Palin accepts nomination knowing dauther is pregnant and will become the fodder of countless new stories...Worse judgement.

This is getting scary. McCain is going to use Palin to dominate the news cycle for weeks and then dump her for a better choice, effectively muting Obama's message. He didn't even get much of a convention bounce. I've got a bad feeling about this...

Spin, spin, spin...
"Focus on the Family founder James Dobson issued a statement commending the Palins for "for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances." He added: "Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord."
Roberta Combs, president of the Christian Coalition of America called the pregnancy private. "It's a matter that should stay in the family and they have to work through it together. My prayers go out to them."
Added Combs: "We're excited about the governor and think she's going to do well."
Mathew Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law, said: "We're all sinners."
"We all make mistakes. Certainly, the ideal is not to get pregnant out of wedlock. But she made the right decision after her mistake," he said."
From the same group of folks that put out a video for people to pray for rain at the DNC?
Wow...
