Liveblogging Prime Time

Open thread for documenting the constant variety of cable news hackery -- or whatever else you're watching.

Tonight! Palin evades the press and the press gets pissed; and the Bushies try to pull another fast one on the American people, but Obama, Dodd and the Democrats aren't taking the bait. Go!

I'm against a $700 billion plus bailout. There, I said it.
The recession will deepen? Unemployement will go up? How about taking a few hundred billion and creating some public works projects?? A few road improvements, bridge replacements, new schools, REBUILD FUCKING NEW ORLEANS!, alternative energy installations... Gear up manufacturing, shore up the Main St vendors, give people JOBS, retrain the stockbroker types. You want to help the middle and working classes, want to make sure we're protected? Then DO it! We won't be protected by throwing $700 billion at freakin' Wall St.
Just my opinion, of course.

I got that stupid fucking Obsession DVD in the mail today. Very thoughtful of them to send me one, somehow knowing I don't subscribe to the local paper that distributed them all over this swing state last week. Ugh.

I wonder how much financial damage you can do if you can drop the DVD back in the mailbox marked "Return To Sender"? If millions of people did it, does the sender get whacked for the postage or does it get eaten by the USPS?

Posted by: Broadway Carl [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 7:48 PM

If you open the package, it doesn't go back to the sender unless you pay for it. If not, the sender would pay. USPS doesn't eat anything!

Hey, that gives me an idea Carl.

Let's look around the house for loose papers. Old circulars, junk mail, napkins, whatever. Then lets bundle all that up and put it in an envelope and send it to our Congresscritter. Add an invoice atop the pile that makes demand for payment in the amount of $1Bln - no questions asked. Tag line, "my paper is just as good as theirs."

This bailout is THE BIG CON of all time.

Posted by: LiveFreeOrDie08 [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 7:57 PM

Oh lord. McCain thinks that the way he might/might not vote on the bailout bill is irrevelvant. Way to take a stand there, Gramps.

What the hell is Rip Torn doing up there with Chris Dodd??

I'm a letter carrier -- re: the DVD and other crap mail -- they generally send these bulk mail, or 3rd class (super mail discount) -- if you refuse, we simply throw out, and they don't even know you refused it. Only if the mail is marked "Return Service" -- in which case we still throw the mail out, but they are notified you refused. Chances are all this crap is just 3rd class.

Posted by: NotAPollStat [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:03 PM

as a P.S. to my letter carrier comment -- we throw out because that's the rule -- we don't throw out cuz we don't want to deal with it (although there are many sleazy carriers who do just that....they're the ones that give us "good" carriers a bad name...)

Posted by: NotAPollStat [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:07 PM

Damn I didn't get one! What will I watch when I have to cancel my cable due to poverty?

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:07 PM

I was thinking about sending it back (but now I know that wouldn't do any good, thanks NotAPollStat) so I think I'll just keep it so when I'm old I can look back on of some of the propaganda that went around "back in my day." (not to watch, but more of a collectors item.)

A lot of people who received it in the paper cancelled their subscriptions.

Great! No Keith - Shuster filling in. Let's see if they bumped Keith so MSNBC can fill us full of more McCain propaganda. If so, let's all call and complain -- NBC/Universal's # is 212-664-4444. No matter how I've tried, they won't give me a real person, it's a "comment line."

Posted by: NotAPollStat [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:13 PM

Shuster is actually doing a pretty good job on Countdown. Im not cringing at all.

Posted by: cminri [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:21 PM

I like Shuster. I thought maybe he was in trouble again since I hadn't seen him in a while.

Posted by: idreamofskiba [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:25 PM

Okay, so this is what I got out of the stuff just before the Barney Frank interview:
Schuster is reporting Republican operatives are urging GOP Congressmen to vote AGAINST the bailout (any bailout, maybe??) and then hammer the Dems for supporting it and saddling the country with this tremendous debt. If Dems cooperate with WH, or come up with their own plan, they're gonna get a lot of flak. If they don't, they're gonna be stuck with the "didn't do anything to help the country in a time of crisis" tag...
this is what Thom Hartmann was talking about, right?

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:27 PM

That sounds about what I heard to ceu. Shows how those Repugs see everything from a position of how to benefit their party rather than the country.

Posted by: cminri [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:31 PM

I agree, so far so good with Shuster. I also agree, ceu, that this sounds like another Republican game. I also suspect the recent conservative "criticism" of McCain by Will, Rove, et al, is another game. They want it to look like the conservatives are criticizing McCain so he can come back and say he's a maverick and is unpopular with the right. Especially Rove -- as if he'd do anything to make Obama's chances better. These are ALL schemes, part of John McRove's bigger plan.

Dear gawd let "Liddy" Dole (R-NC)lose! She's blaming fannie and freddie, and wants Sarah "Snowjob Squareglasses" Palin to come and stump for her.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:34 PM

I'm sick of everyone asking if he thinks he should've picked Hillary instead.

Posted by: idreamofskiba [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:45 PM

ceu is right-- LET them fail. Let them lose the 15% value in their portfolios or whatever. New Deal the $700 billion.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:52 PM

Jane - having Sarah Lou stump for Liddy might be a good thing. Her popularity is plummeting and Liddy's behind by 3 pts, per electoral-vote.com.

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 8:56 PM

Matt Lauer is an a-hole, asking a-hole questions. More Hillary crap, I agree with you, idream... If Keith was there he would have pointed out the stupid questioning by Lauer. Also, Shuster showed his true colors when he apologized to McCain for Keith's reporting last night. More bullshit -- Keith expressly explained last night what that was, specifically saying McCain wasn't calling it an earmark. Maybe that's why they booted Keith off tonight, so they could "apologize" to McCain for "their error." Now McCain's taking over Keith's show.

Posted by: NotAPollStat [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:04 PM

Sarah's "excellent UN adventure"! I will grant Shuster temporary amnesty.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:27 PM

Speaking of a press that's just worthless:

Why do we hear nothing about the Bill Gwatney murder or the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church murders??????????????????

I guess it's OK to kill liberals!

Posted by: kansasdem [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:30 PM

Rick Davis was getting money from Freddie Mac until last month???
Quick, Jane, Tell Liddy!!
Woo-hoo!

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:31 PM

Live Free- you out there? I checked out the Premier radio show list. Keith Sweat? He oughta care if Premier overpays a racist like Limbaugh.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:32 PM

Ahhh Liddy couldn't give a shit could she? I don't want her to get Palin to stump for her. In this state it would apparently help her. I just want her to be embarrassed on a national level, where people might give to Kay Hagan.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:34 PM

You're right, though, Chris. She oughta care about Davis- or at least she may get her talking points messed up.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 9:36 PM

And one more thing....Paulson had the balls today to say that he thought it would be "presumptuous" oversight provisions to the bailout plan - that that was something for Congress, blah, blah, although, as Schuster points out, the plan explicitly stated that all decisions would be at the Treasury Secretary's discretion and there would be NO oversight and NO judicial review!

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 10:00 PM

GO Rachel!!! Rick the Salamander Davis, what a slime! Tomorrow the McCain campaign will attack Mr. Isikoff and Newsweek for this latest revelation.

Posted by: NotAPollStat [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 23, 2008 10:02 PM

No conspiracy involved in Keith's absence tonight, sorry. He said last night that he was going to the ball game tonight.
