Liveblogging the RNC - Day One

5:53PM
So with all of the chaos, I never received the go-ahead for liveblogging at the Huffington Post, so I guess I'll get started here. Bill Bennett just went off on Wolf Blitzer about a report on the Bristol Palin matter. I'm sure there will be video of that one soon. And Laura Bush was just on stage saying that this isn't a time for partisan politics -- after all, we're all Americans, she said. Then she went on to underscore that all of the Gulf Coast governors are Republicans. Yay!

5:55PM
Cindy McCain coming up. No word as to whether Steve Doocy wrote her speech.

5:57PM
Here comes Cindy McCain. She looks kinda like a banana.

6PM
Laura Bush: "Americans are known for coming to aide of our fellow citizens." Except in the case of George Bush and John McCain during Katrina, and only when it's politically advantageous.

6:02PM
It sounds like that's all for tonight from St. Paul. I'll continue to liveblog the coverage anyway.

Liveblogging continued after the jump...

6:12PM
Pat Boone on the convention floor. McBush fever! Catch it!

6:16PM

6:17PM
The Republican Chairman Mike Duncan looks exactly like every Republican ever. So manly with their spray-on tans, eh?

6:22PM
New poll numbers coming in from all around... As we know by now CNN has Obama 49, McCain 48. However, check this:

USAToday/Gallup: Obama 50%, McCain 43%
CBS: Obama 48%, McCain 40%

The USA Today/Gallup poll has some other interesting numbers.

"Strong and decisive leader" -- Obama 46%, McCain 44%
And... "Obama has a 19-point lead in managing the economy."

6:34PM
CNN is really hitting the Bristol story. Carville said that the Republicans need to get some sandbags on the levees. Wolf Blitzer seems obsessed with both the Bristol story and the Troopergate scandal.

6:37PM
McCain spokesman Nancy Pfotenhauer on the CNN panel between Castellanos and Borger. "In fact she's a hero," she just said about Governor Palin. Cable news hasn't even tapped into the fact that Palin ran Ted Stevens' 527.

6:58PM
I mostly agree with Hilzoy:

As far as I'm concerned, it's fair game to consider Sarah Palin's statements about her daughter's decision, and to compare them to her own views about abortion. That's a story about whether or not Sarah Palin sticks to her beliefs when they affect her own family, not about her daughter. But it is not fair game to use her daughter, or any of her kids, as pawns in a political argument.

McCain and Palin will stack the Supreme Court with far-right judges who want to overturn Roe. I can't fathom how a politician -- any politician -- can ballyhoo their daughter's "decision" while attempting to deny that right to other daughters.

7:01PM
It's alternate reality Keith. Weird hurricane music and graphics.

7:04PM
Wolf vs. Bennett! Fight!

h/t 'The Air America Blog of the Week'

7:17PM
The McCain campaign praises the right to choose:

Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.

Yeah, Palin's right to choose. Not your right to choose. And now FOX News Channel is suggesting that Governor Palin is... PRO-CHOICE!

palinchoice.jpg

7:27PM
Meanwhile, on TV it's all hurricane all the time on MSNBC.

7:28PM
Jake Tapper asks:

What would the response be if Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and his wife Michelle had a pregnant unmarried teenage daughter?

A pregnant black unmarried teenager? Game over.

7:29PM
Fred Gwynne's judge character from My Cousin Vinny is talking about a map of New Orleans on CNN. "Did you say 'yoot'?"

7:36PM
The best TPM front page graphic ever:

palinderailed2.jpg

7:37PM
Reports from all around... Palin was a member of a fringe political party that advocated Alaskan secession -- secession, of course, is treasonous. Meltdown.

7:44PM
This is becoming a Palin Meltdown Liveblog, so I want to reiterate and underscore... This is more about McCain's lack of judgment and incompetence than Governor Palin. Unfortunately for her, she was unwise to accept the job and now becomes an on-going illustration of McCain's inability to be president. I seriously can't see her continuing forward. At some point, she's going to have to step down for the sake of her family.

7:48PM
CNN is spending more time reporting on Palin than the hurricane now.

7:49PM
Would someone inform CNN that Senator Obama has very successful executive experience?! Please?

7:50PM
Campbell Brown is seriously hammering McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds on CNN right now. Wow. No barbecue here.

7:54PM
Gloria Borger giving Joe Biden debate tips? Seriously?

8:03PM
BooMan sets the record straight:

Let me repeat: the rumors that Trig Palin was actually the son of Bristol Palin were started last spring by Republicans in Alaska that don't like Sarah Palin.

8:10PM
It's worth noting that Bill Kristol publicly advised Senator McCain to choose Palin. Bill Kristol -- who's Best Of Album includes advising George Bush to invade Iraq. Wrong on everything.

8:28PM
Roe v. Wade addresses and clarifies our constitutional right to privacy. The McCain-Palin ticket seeks to overturn that right. Odd since this is their latest statement regarding this teen pregnancy issue:

“This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children’s privacy.”

“The media should respect Bristol’s privacy. That’s always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.”

And of course I agree that Bristol Palin deserves privacy. So do we all -- especially our daughters when it comes to their medical decisions.

8:33PM
CNN has started to simply replay earlier segments and MSNBC is all hurricanish. So I'm going to wrap up. I'll be online for the rest of the night, blogging as usual. Feel free to use this as a Meltdown Open Thread. Meanwhile, I'm making my 8:29 entry into its own post. Cheers! Melty!

How do they stand there and say these things with a straight face? Why does the barbecue media not mention the bungling, horrendous, inhuman handling of Katrina at every opportunity?

Or did I just answer my own question?

Good thing Rick Perry of Texas didn't politicize this potential tragedy...oh wait...

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 6:02 PM

wonder if the BBQers will talk about this poll?

Concerning current "mainstream" polling (I know, I'm preaching to the choir, but here goes anyway):

The national polls conducted by telephone (Zogby included) are completely skewed.

A majority of younger people who are strong Obama supporters don't even have home phones. Their only phone is a cell, and cell numbers aren't polled.

Zogby should obtain cell phone numbers across the US (I'm sure Mukasey could help him out there) and include them when polling.

Additionally - pollsters tend to use "likely voters" which they define as those persons who have voted in the last two presidential elections.

That cuts out anyone under the age of 26, for one thing, and it cuts out all those who are newly registered to vote, regardless of age.

If those people were included, the poll results would be quite different, I guarantee it.

Keeping up with the RNC seems a bit like rubbernecking at a highway collision- can't help wondering what the carnage is going to look like.

Posted by: sdrDusty [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 6:36 PM

Thankfully, it looks as though the damages from this storm will be small compared to many hurricanes we've seen lately, but Rick Perry reminds me of the running back who jumps up & thumps his chest after a 2 yard gain.

Congratulations. You followed a preset emergency plan, based on lessons learned from a monumentally incompetent failure 3 years ago, and did it without screwing it up.

Breaking Palin News:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/cvn_palin_troopergate

To paraphrase the right wingers - if Palin's innocent, why does she need an attorney?
What does she have to worry about?

Posted by: PackyJ [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 6:47 PM

You have mail Bob.

Posted by: Paddy [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 6:49 PM

Oh, and don't forget that "Mrs Bennet" (as he freaking calls his own wife) is a purveyour of abstinence only classroom shit with iffy dealings-http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/Story?id=5054210s.

Posted by: Paddy [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 6:53 PM

Troopergate. Babygate. I'd barely heard of this woman before last Friday and now I've already got a pain in my Palin. Is there an unwritten law somewhere that Republicans can't run for office unless they're under investigation?

And ... Pat Boone? Seriously, is that the best they can come up with?

Bob ... how CAN you stand the excitement?

Posted by: Readytohurl [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:02 PM

Just watching Palin's acceptance speech now. "Hillary left 18 million cracks in the highest, hardest glass ceiling in America..." She should've finished it with, "And I would like to slip through one of them, thank you!"

Posted by: El Mystico [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:12 PM

wow--this is amazing--I just saw the Bennet clip, and Faux News' Hume "All Star Panel" and both Bennett and Fred Barnes praised Obama's response-

If there is a silver lining, at least right-wingers are seeing the decency and humanity of Barack Obama. I do believe the ab-only issue should be on the table--right-wingers are stuttering and stammering all over the place on this-quite a site to see--I don't see how the Palin nom survives this in that if there is anything even remotely questionable about trooper-gate, she's done.

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:15 PM

Cindy said it was time to take their Republican hats off and put their American hats on. I thought you were supposed to leave your American hat on all the time....

Posted by: mcinfla [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:36 PM

For what it's worth, MSNBC hasn't mentioned the Palin baby - I've had it on most of the day. Makes ya wonder how the most liberal cable news network, with no conscience & no morals, missed the chance to exploit a 17 year old, eh?

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:40 PM

Watching Bobby Jindal give hurricane updates - he's looking good relative to the current VP pick.
God help us - WTF was McBush thinking?!! I REALLY need to have it explained to me. Is he that stupid (to believe that any woman would serve as a HRC replacement) or just really lazy?

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:47 PM

yeah Tweety's having a Tweetgasm over the Repubs "ability to lead" in crisis. How this guy can be confused with left wing is beyond me--if anything he just blows in the wind depending on the day--check out Rachel Maddow streamimg live on AAR--she's talking about it in her usual thoughtful way.

I still do not see Palin lasting through the RNC--

Posted by: JG [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:50 PM

Regarding Palin not lasting through the RNC - someone had a theory here that I had thought of earlier (I think it was Space Cowboy) on how due to her family, Palin would drop out during or after the RNC. Cowboy took it one step further - coming in to save the day would be Gen. David Petraeus to be McCain's VP nominee. The MSM would be drooling 24/7 through September and the Petraeus choice would bump McCain in the polls. The race would be a lot closer come election time.

This new news regarding Palin's daughter is the first step in that process.

Posted by: Broadway Carl [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 7:59 PM

@ Carl.

Wish I came up with that one, but it was 'camel54'.

I came up with the betting a seasonal brew that Palin won't last another 48 hours.

May have to own up on that one...not sure yet.

Posted by: The Space Cowboy [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 8:11 PM

@ Cowboy - thanks for clearing that up. Sorry Camel. Leave it to the Republicans to fuck up a good night of liveblogging.

Posted by: Broadway Carl [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 9:27 PM

i just read on kos that ko was pulled from covering the rnc and put on hurricane duty from nyc. i'm sure it has nothing to due with his coverage of the repugs, low these last few years.

Posted by: beil75 [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 1, 2008 10:14 PM

From TPM:

"Whether Bush will address delegates via satellite Tuesday night had not been decided, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and others had been expected to speak Monday night, but the McCain campaign and convention officials agreed to trim back the politics and focus instead on fundraising for victims of Hurricane Gustav."

Now that's what I want to see... GWB's chimpy mug on that HUGE screen just begging comparisons between the Chimp-in-chief and Adam Sutler from V For Vendetta...
