The Great Fear of 2008
My daughter came home from school yesterday and reported that a classmate was wearing a 'Nobama' t-shirt. When she asked her classmate why she was wearing the t-shirt, the classmate said, "Because if Obama's elected he's going to burn all the white people like Hitler did."
True story.
Of course this isn't new, nor is it restricted to children. In 1860, Lincoln faced similar accusations from the Southern 'Fire-Eaters' who insisted that he was going encourage slaves to rise up and kill their white masters. 148 years ago, and Americans are still passing along this infection to their kids. Not surprising, but all the more reason why a President Obama will be a crucial step towards crushing this immoral American fear.
Adding... 2008's fire-eaters aren't restricted to ignorant parents who buy their kids 'Nobama' shirts. Don't forget that there's a notorious race-baiter on every cable news network (Buchanan, Castellanos, Rove). And on every national TV network, the Republicans broadcast an obvious racial stereotype -- one delivered by a former candidate, and another by their vice presidential nominee.

Oh, God. Great state we live in, eh, Bob? Out here in Western PA, we still have people lamenting that the Steelers hired "one of them" to coach. My stomach hurts today. Dammit Obama, I need some good news and hope today!

"Like Hitler did?" Really? So Hitler is a radical black man now?

It makes me cry. :( The ignorance and racism inherent in such a fear is just astounding. I share your hope that an Obama presidency will defeat these ignorant, evil ideas.

This is amazing. Maybe your daughter should educate her say, " My daddy says it's not true. He's only going to burn the STUPID white people that buy 'Nobama' T-shirts. Let your mom and dad know so they can hide."

Time to rip this band-aide off. If this man loses because of unchallenged racism...we will all lose.
I have said and will say again that I think it's time to take to the streets. There's strength in standing up shoulder to shoulder for what you believe in. If we shine light on the issue it will be easy to expose the racist roaches for what they are.
btw, of all people Paul Reiser wrote something insightful on HP today. Kudos to him. Take a look...

Welcome to my hell...er I mean, South Carolina. Same thing.
My 12 year-old fights this fight all the time in school, and I don't understand why he keeps doing it either. My only guess is he thinks he's protecting me in some way.
Know what happens when Liberals die? Yes, that's right, they wake up in South Carolina.

Just this week, in Cumberland MD, Western MD, I was in a doctors office...Fox news was on of course, and this man in the waiting room spoke about "You know, Obamas father was a muslim"..."Obama is getting his campaign money from Pakistan".."America was founded as a Christian nation". I said, no the beauty of America is that it believes in Religious freedom..He would have none of that...No, this is a Christian country and we need a Christian in the White House. I said well wasn't that what Bush was. He shook his head no, saying Bush wasn't the real deal as far as Christians go. This country is in real trouble and the only thing that will help us is if we get someone who believes in Jesus in the WH.
Later that day, in a gun shop in Cumberland, the man behind the counter was positively giddy about Palin, he kept bringing her up.."She's one of us! Hell I wish the ticket was reversed!. And she is sexy as hell!!"
I lose faith on those days...It realy helps to come here and know that there are still sane people out there, with their eyes wide open and they see what I see.

I feel your pain. Your experience is why we refuse to send our son to a public school. We send him to a Montessori hybrid: it's a charter school funded by the school district.
Had anyone shown up with a "Nobama" t-shirt they would not have been allowed into the school. Kids cannot wear political, nor commercial-oriented t-shirts. No TV shows, no marketing, nothing negative. Spiderman, Cars, Hello Kitty are allowed but that's about it. They can wear outdoor brands, yes, but any other art work that can be interpreted as negative towards anyone is verboten!
Parents sign off on a code of conduct for their kids behavior, even 4 year olds who don't know better have to adhere to this code. Last week some kid threw sand into my son's friend's eyes. The kid was removed on the spot to the head of the school, his parents called and they had to drop everything and come get their kid.
Just as the parent was about to lay into his kid, the head waved him outdoors with the manual, showing him where parents are not allowed to chew out their kids on school grounds. "Go home and say nothing at all actually because he got an earful from me already."
I just love this place. We've got cowboys, rednecks, grungers, and rich parents with one thing in common: open minds. Parents who would have no way of socializing get to do just that. This is how the educational experience should be, and in our case it's a reality.

I hear comments constantly regarding Obama i.e. "He doesn't look like me", "He's a Muslim", flag pins, hand over heart, etc. It's disillusioning as hell, especially when I know what they really want to say is that they're not going to vote for a you know the word.
Just last night I was having a conversation with a man who I consider very intelligent but was unsure of his political views. He abso-fucking-lutely LOVES Sarah Palin. What he told me is, "I'm in love with her". When I asked him why he couldn't give me any valid reason, seriously. I asked him what he knew about her - zilch. This same man think GWB has been a wonderful POTUS, that the terrorists are hiding under our beds, and we're safer now than we were pre 9/11. How the fuck do you counter that? I basically sat there speechless for the most part.
I never though I'd end friendships based on political views, but I'm definitely questioning how I can remain friends with people that incredibly fucking stupid. Especially since their past votes are what got us into this fucking mess in the first place.
(Sorry for the frequent "F" bombs, but I'm just fucking fed up!)

"he was going encourage slaves to rise up and kill their white masters. "
Hmmmm...I'm not the bloodthirsty type but even if this were true Lincoln wouldn't have necessarily lost my vote, if you know what I mean ;)
But seriously, there's nothing to do you can do to change the minds of these fascists... errrr...I mean "people". The energy otherwise spent is best directed toward fighting for the middle--the independents.

If any here are people of faith (any faith), I've posted a faith based effort on Barack Obama's site: http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/meeting/gs7try
Nowhere to go - just asking for all to bring their spiritual "A" Game to pray for blessings for this campaign.
