In The Shadow Of Two Gunmen
The ATF says it has broken up a [skinhead] plot to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 102 black people in a Tennessee murder spree.
I hope beyond all hope that Senator Obama's Secret Service protection is impenetrable.
UPDATE: More...
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said the two men planned to shoot 88 black people and decapitate another 14. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community. The men also sought to go on a national killing spree, with Obama as its final target, Cavanaugh told The Associated Press.
The 14 Words: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." Grotesque.

I feel sick.
This country better hope nothing happens to him, whether they like him or not. There would be no recovering from something like that.

Holy shit. I take a few hours off and come back to this. Decapitate? Jesus H. I hope you're right about the protection. This is going to be 4-8 years of fear for our side at this rate. And where'd they get the number 102? Significant in some skinhead wingnut fuckface way?

Incoming attempt by Palin to avoid labeling these men as terrorists.

Let's hope that they do their jobs better than they ever have. Apparently, they're going to need to.
Also, since we're apparently making lots of West Wing references lately, let's hope for CJ's sake there aren't any unfortunate convenience store robberies.

I've had Shuster on in the background since I got home and he hasn't said a word about it. Is this so breaking that tv hasn't even picked it up? They are talking Ted Stevens and Jesse Jackson and 49ers. Whah?

Frightening yes. Shocking? No. We can expect this. It won't be the last you can count on it. I implore each and everyone of you to be careful while campaigning.

So it was significant (the numbers). Those psychos always have to have symbol.
Palin: or COURSE they aren't terrorists. Terrorists would only be fuckwits who tried to kill HER.

Poleezz I'm even nervous wearing my Obama gear and having my sign. I do it, I take the chance, but in this rural NC area I do think about what could happen. But I'd rather they got me than Barack.

No matter how much racism and disgusting behavior I have seen during this campaign, I still am shocked by it. I guess maybe I have too much faith in humanity. I am glad they were caught. Sickening.

88 refers to HH (H is the 8th letter of the alphabet) as in Heil Hitler.
I was wondering what the 102 number was all about.
Posted by: amaraya
at October 27, 2008 3:55 PM
DP - They get the 102 by adding 88 and 14, two fucking retarded White Supremacist Honky Numerology Code Numbers for how dickless and retarded they are. Fourteen is a reference to the "14 words" that compose the Killer Honky Pinhead Mission Statement, "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children," as coined by the happily deceased white supremacist David Lane. Eighty-eight is Super-Brainy Honky Asshole Code for Heil Hitler, "H" being the -- wait for it, this is tricky!! -- 8th letter of the alphabet. Dickless sheet-wearing redneck assholes.

So according to the highly-intelligent Sarah Palin:
Obama = Terrorist
Abortion Clinic Bombers = Not Terrorist
White Supremacist would-be assassins = Not Terrorist

dontpanic: Yeah. Me too. Seriously. I wish I could laugh but I'm actually in tears right now, because I hate... HATE being freaking terrorized. Tell me these creeps aren't terrorists.
But you know what? God willing and I'm alive and walking - November 4 I'm voting. That's the message I've got for every freaking terrorist of any ilk.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, in a horrified "pink-elephant-in-the-room" way. I had a thought while I was rewatching the West Wing third season opener, Isaac and Ishmael. For those who don't obsessively watch all things Aaron Sorkin, it was an episode written directly after 9/11, attempting to answer questions about terrorism.
At the end, Josh Lyman says to the teenagers he's been talking to that the terrorists don't hate us for our freedom, they hate us for our plurality. For our ability to have churches next to synagogues next to mosques.
And then he says, (I'm paraphrasing) You want to hurt these guys? You want to reach in and kill them where they live? Keep accepting more than one idea.
And those people, these psychotic hitler-wannabes, who hate all things not white, are exactly the same as the terrorists they abhor.
So how do we beat them? Foster debate. Keep accepting more than one idea. And possibly the most amazing thing about Barack Obama is that he does exactly that.
(Sorry, the pre-election valium must be getting to me...)

I can't help but have noticed this:
"The men, Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark., are being held without bond."
http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2008/10/27/20081027skinhead-plot1027-ON.html
Thanks to Paddy at:

The part that caught my eye:
"Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Ark."
ARKANSAS!
Think about everything that's happened in Arkanas of late!
WTF ever happened with the Bill Gwatney investigation? That was clearly an assassination!
Where have the follow up news conf's been?
For that matter where's the follow up on the ass-holes busted in Denver just before the Dem Convention?
It'll be nice to see a return to justice in our Justice Dept!

This is absolutely frightening, but unfortunately, I'm not surprised. My gut has been waiting for news like this.
Shuster on MSNBC kept reporting the "breaking news" story, but kept adding the disclaimer that they weren't sure if it was an ACTUAL plot or just a bunch of guys sitting around and talking about it. MSNBC is a piece of work. They didn't blink with the hoax story, nor have they blinked with the 2001 Obama interview lie. But they have to say basically if the guys were just sitting around talking about it, IT WOULD BE OKAY????

I wish they would. I'm not worried about my Obama gear..I live in Richmond VA - in the city, not the 'burbs - If you know Richmond's vigilante history..Let's just say, I'm good. But I do understand rural NC but by the way the voters are turning out down there your probably good. My parents live in G'boro, so far so good.

BTW you said, "I hope beyond all hope that Senator Obama's Secret Service protection is impenetrable."
You know they're not! Obama has made himself quite accessible! He's not scared! He's no pussy! He knows that this is not just about him!
He's a true American hero!

These twisted racists pose a danger, make no mistake about it: irrational, conspiratorial, violent, prone to delusions of grandeur. In his 1879 essay "Death of Abraham Lincoln," Walt Whitman writes a somber passage about his sighting of Lincoln in 1861 outside the Astor House in NYC; it may be worth pondering for the way it describes the hostility, ambivalence, and potential for violence always swirling around Lincoln's person, and how the man somehow kept himself together, like the calm at the center of a hurricane. The link is http://www.bartleby.com/229/2009.html, and the passage begins "He look’d with curiosity upon that immense sea of faces, and the sea of faces return’d the look with similar curiosity."

Growing up in the 50/60's has advantages and disadvantages. I know EXACTLY what you mean about wearing your Obama gear. I have the same issues. I wear it. I don't put a sign in my yard though. When I was at the Democratic headquarters today they told me the RNC is paying people to pull signs out of yards. If you live in red states, or pink states in some instances, you just need to be cautious knocking doors and that sort of thing. I'm never afraid, just watchful. We're gonna win this thing!

Thank, Elvis, for the lesson in stupid fuckwits (Avi's favorite word just keeps falling out of my fingers). Wadda buncha maroons.
Along with the freakiness of their wanting to kill Obama, they were going to hit this other 102 in a HIGH school--kids, dammit. I hope they stick them in a dank cell with Charlie Manson and none ever see the light of day.

Good research on the numbers and their symbolism - here's a link to ADL's database:
http://adl.org/hate_symbols/numbers_14-88.asp
I can attest, however, that Obama's security is as tight as it could be given the enormity of his campaign. I was at the rally in Denver on Sunday and the presence was difficult to miss.

just remember: crackpots like these guys, and fearmongerers and race-baiters on the Right, are in the thankful, and very small, minority. From November 4th, a new page will have been turned in the history of American race relations. And nobody can ever, ever undo that.

Solrac, it's my armed neighbors I'm worried about. I put the sign in front of a 4 foot wide and tall stump right in front of my porch to deflect any bullets. It they steal it I'm out $8. If they shoot...maybe I'm just out some dead bark. Our county can't keep Obama signs out because of the bitter, insecure fuckwits stealing them so they aren't seen.
Richmond--isn't that a combination of normal inner city people and old confederate white rich people who pay people to spitshine the statue of Jeff Davis? Maybe I just got my image of it through Patricia Cornwell's books...

--and this is exactly why John Lewis said what he said--the McCain/Palin rhetoric from a few weeks ago was downright scary--pouring gasoline on the fires of hate is unacceptable.
so sad the BBQ media framed it as a tactic rather than calling it what it was: inciting violence and hate.

Yo twoeightnine, I've got the same shirt, my brother got it for me a few days ago. Rock on.
On another note, I think I remember one of the guys on Real Time last weekend saying that race is no longer a factor in this country anymore. It's very sad, but anyone who believes that couldn't be further from the truth - just look at the girl who carved the B in her face and these two assholes. You just have to hope that the secret service and the rest of the law is doing their jobs.
