Liveblogging Biden vs. Palin - Thread 5
10:11PM
"There you gooo again, Jooo!" OOOH! Isn't she aborable! OH! Weeee!
10:12PM
Jesus. She's just absolutely George W. Bush by way of Edie McClurg. No substance. Just a rambling personality who doesn't belong anywhere near anything serious.
10:15PM
Her answer on the vice presidency was the Couric Palin. That was her Miss South Carolina moment.
10:23PM
Biden is welling up talking about his kids and the middle class. Then we cut to Palin-bot and she goes off like an animatronic character from It's A Small World.
10:24PM
Wow. She doesn't compromise. Never has. Does that sound familiar?
10:26PM
You know who lost? Gwen Ifill. She was a terrible moderator.
10:30PM
With the economy crumbling around us, I can't imagine that anyone is buying this perky nonsensical babbling. Totally unserious.
10:33PM
And now the cable news people tell us about a debate we didn't see.
10:36PM
Will anyone rip apart the fact that she was totally nonspecific on the questions? I mean, sure, politicians tend to dodge, but this was a crutch. Pakistan = foreign = nuclear = talk about foreign nuclear.
10:38PM
And before I finish asking... Andrea Mitchell: "She didn't answer questions." And, "She would raise her own questions and then answer it." Matthews, "Reciting to the point. It was like I was watching a spelling bee."
10:40PM
Rachel Maddow: "Frenetic. Cartoonish."
10:41PM
Buchanan: "She was sensational."
10:43PM
Frank Luntz's focus group on FOX News says Palin won the debate. Whatever.
10:47PM
Soledad has a room of gomers on CNN. "People dialed down" during the folksy moments. Then again, an older undecided voter said she's decided to vote for Obama because she didn't like Biden's answers on the economy. And there you go.
10:50PM
Mike Murphy: the debate was "a bit of a Nothing Burger." Cool. Huh?
10:58PM
I'm thinking that the McCain campaign will become overconfident and thrust her into more ridiculous interviews -- or maybe even a press conference. Either of these things will delete any uptick in her awful reputation.
10:59PM
Here comes Keith.
11:02PM
I missed this the first time. Palin: "Your ticket's energy ticket."
11:06PM
Tonight went a long way towards further connecting the McCain-Palin ticket to George W. Bush. You could almost exactly hear President Bush reciting those same answers verbatim.
11:10PM
Ed Rollins on CNN... She'll have crowds of 15,000 tomorrow.
11:11PM
CNN instant poll... Who did better in the debate? Biden 51, Palin 38. Palin qualified to be president? Up four points from 42 to 46. That might as well be nothing.
11:17PM
You know what George W. Bush has always been really, really good at? Talking for a long time about basically nothing. It's his press conference tactic. The more he talks, the fewer questions he has to take. And he doesn't always choke on his own tongue while he's doing it. Then again, he doesn't really have a direction or a point -- nor does he make any sense. Just like Sarah Palin.
11:20PM
CBS poll... Who won? Biden 46, Palin 21, Tie 33.
11:21PM
Her ridiculous vice presidency answer:
Well, our founding fathers were very wise there in allowing through the Constitution much flexibility there in the office of the vice president. And we will do what is best for the American people in tapping into that position and ushering in an agenda that is supportive and cooperative with the president's agenda in that position. Yeah, so I do agree with him that we have a lot of flexibility in there, and we'll do what we have to do to administer very appropriately the plans that are needed for this nation. And it is my executive experience that is partly to be attributed to my pick as V.P. with McCain, not only as a governor, but earlier on as a mayor, as an oil and gas regulator, as a business owner. It is those years of experience on an executive level that will be put to good use in the White House also.
And such as and. Maps!
11:22PM
CNN poll... More in touch with people like you? Biden 50, Palin 44.
11:25PM
Oh, and Biden's response to Palin's ridiculous Ms. North Carolina answer:
Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we've had probably in American history. The idea he doesn't realize that Article I of the Constitution defines the role of the vice president of the United States, that's the Executive Branch. He works in the Executive Branch. He should understand that. Everyone should understand that.
11:26PM
That's all for me. I'm going to post some additional observations as their own thing. Cheers!

What was the point of the debate if at the very beginning Palin said she wasn't going to answer the questions "the way the moderator wanted"? She gave herself permission to speak about anything she wanted, and by the way, when she did answer questions - like the Cheney thing - she got it wrong.
Love Rachel! "Boring and right, or exciting and wrong. Those are the choices."

Am I the only one that fell their heart drop when Biden said they aren't for same sex marriage? I did know that on paper they are not for it but it really hurt to hear him say it. Part of me wants to believe that they really don't want to come out and say they are for it just because it isn't popular with a majority of people but they don't really feel that way. But maybe they really are against it. It makes me sad.

soooo. conscious decision by dems to avoid the rape kit issue. wow. kinda spineless. here, biden was the sponsor of the violence against women act, which penalized states by withholding federal funds if they didn't pay for rape kits. alaska state government passes law requiring that they be paid for by localities. wasilla under palin refuses. why not go after that? ifill should have brought it up, at a minimum, but biden could have at least raised the issue...

CCC, I know what you mean. They both (O'Biden) say they're for civil thingies, guaranteeing hospital visitation etc. But really, like Sarah says at least, why not let states decide? There's a good chance most states would allow/refuse to criminalize gay marriage.
Posted by: jane

Enough of this shit! I'm not sexist, but I wish women wouldn't say shit like, "She went toe-to-toe with him (Biden)." Ferraro says, she was proud of Palin, and hoped her grand daughters would be able to look back at this history.
Basically, doesn't matter what Palin represents, she is a WOMAN, and that is ALL that matters.
WTF???!
Let's cut the bullshit about being equal. We ARE different, but we ain't equal in some regards!
Example-
Have Roger Federer play Venus Williams...
BLOWOUT!!!
They are both the best players in tennis BUT they ARE different..
Nothin' wrong with that!
Matter a fact,
I LOVE WOMEN!*wink*
It seems feminist hate being women!
What's THAT all about?!

You guys frickin' rock. I've not been around much. My TV is not near my 'puter, so I watched the debate, and then checked out your ocmments. But you frickin' rock. Because you all say what I want to say, only better. I'm TIVO'ing the pundits, so I could read y'all's comments, which mean more to me. You guys GET IT. You guys say what I want to, only better. I had to do the bottle of wine, and man, this debate was movin' fast. But Joe frickin' rocked my world. Sarah is a frickin' asswipe, even with the bottle of wine. Now it's time to take TIVO off pause, and see what the frickin' right wing pundits on MSNBC have to say. I hope I don't break my TV with their bull shit. But I love you guys, really! I do!

Cupcake -
They are against defining it as marriage because each church decides who they will marry. It's a label thing that really gets to me every time it's said. It does hurt. The issue should be that equality exists for any recognized legal union - and the church should define who gets that union. The problem is that the definition of marriage that Obama/Biden use is NOT the general vernacular for the country - so they're playing a semantics game.

Good strategy there, Mayor Palin.

Yeah, Jane. They got something like $3600 each. Which is great, 'cause it's their land, their resources.
She's awful, just awful. Horrific.
It's so sad to know that the GOP has turned this election into a complete joke with their candidates. This is MY country - how dare they pull this shit on it??

"When she says hockey, does she mean like "shit" hockey or like a "big hocker" hockey?"
Well I'm thinkin' that when she say's hockey she mean's hockey, but it's hard to tell.
What ya' gotta' know is that there's lot's of kinds of hockey and some hockey isn't like other hockey ............ ya' know!
But I grew up around hockey and I know hockey but if I didn't know hockey I'd invade Pakistan.
Okay?

KO: "Biden said the past is prologue. Palin said the past is irrelevant". That sums it up.
No time to play the blame game and point fingers. Don't look back. Don't look to the origins of problems to come up with the solutions.
someone please tell me when it will be time to place blame or will we be forevermore a nation with no accountability, no responsibility for anything horrendous thing done in our names?
Will the police no longer investigate crimes? Dead body on the floor, but we don't care how it got there or who is responsible for putting it there or making it dead - just deal with the burial and move on...

Did you guys notice that in focus group perception graph on CNN, the people would dial way down whenever Palin criticizes Obama? I found that quite interesting. Goes to show most people actually think Obama is right on most issues.

Palin was that cunt hockey/soccer mom. I'm a mom of 4 -- hockey mom of 3 (including my oldest daughter) and soccer mom of 4. Palin was that disgusting "pit bull" mom who would bitch and moan when the ref called a foul against her kid, and who would cheer when her kid slammed ours against the boards for an injury. I cheered all the kids on all the teams for the good plays they made. She disgusts me as a mother and a human being. (Look how she uses her kids for photo-ops!) Buchanan and his ilk disugst me, also, with how they lionize her for her faults.

What I want to know is, Why is government-run healthcare automatically considered to be a bad thing by these dickheads?
Gov't-run healthcare has done pretty well by McLame all his life, right? And gov't-run healthcare insurance has done very fucking wonderful by me. I have 4th-stage esophageal cancer, and my gov't-run health coverage (tricare) which is for, in my case, retired military folks, has never denied a single test, treatment program, medication, or anything else. they've spent tens of thousands of dollars on my treatment, and will probably end up spending somewhere around $100,000 or more - all without a single peep of negativity.
I'm just so fucking tired of people ragging on a program that the government (at least in my case - and in the cases of many, many other vets)has managed very, very well.
