Liveblogging The Second Presidential Debate
7:06PM EDT
Here we go! If there's a positive side to the big -508 today, it's that McCain will have to wrap his troll brain around the economy. And of course... If the debate is the economy, McCain loses.
7:15PM
I wish I could've seen the far-right "nutjobs" Matthews was just talking about. I can only imagine what racial epithets they were blurting out.
7:26PM
I've got a fever, and the only cure is more "Heh?!"
They took down the video, but we noticed McCain's creepy Penguinish 'heh?!' thing back in August.
7:31PM
Senator Obama only needs to be himself tonight -- maybe show some sympathy for one or two of the questioners. It'd be a mistake to get aggressive or "go on the attack" without provocation. And Senator McCain needs a victory, so expect a wild and erratic night full of 'Heh?!' and creepy grinning/cackling.
7:39PM
Watching CNN. I don't know what's more hypocritically elitist... Lou Dobbs' giant caps, or Mitt Romney's tanning bed glow.
7:58PM
Norah is in King of Prussia, PA with a focus group thing. I should drive down and crash the party.
8:02PM
Keith going after the violent outbursts at the McCain-Palin rallies. Why wasn't the "Kill him!" guy arrested? Oh! Strike that. Keith says the Secret Service is investigating. Goddamn Palin. She is a disgusting, airheaded freak who, if she looked like Madeleine Albright, would be taunted out of politics forever. But I've heard from more than a few guys who think she's "hot." Hot?! I find her repulsive in every way. She's an ugly, decrepit human being with a dark, twisted, frightening soul.
8:19PM
And she's a coward, too.
8:28PM
A random wingnut forwarded this whisper campaign e-mail to me today with the message:
Just thought I'd send this your way. This is the man you are voting in as our next United States President?? NICE.....Maybe, all of you liberals ought to 'rethink' this. Do you REALLY want a muslim terrorist with radical views as our next president????????
The whisper campaign goes on and on about how Senator Obama attained cash for college and an overseas trip. So I replied with the following...
And yet you voted twice for a president who is best friends with 'Bandar Bush' and the Saudi royal family. 15 of the 17 September 11 terrorists were Saudis, by the way. George W. Bush has also done business with the Bin Laden family (Salem bin Laden was an investor in Bush's Arbusto company). Prescott Bush did business with the Nazi Party and Hilter before WWII. Meanwhile, John McCain is friends with a convicted Watergate burglar who advocated shooting federal agents and who fired handguns at cardboard cutouts of Senator Hillary Clinton. McCain is a member of an organization called the US Council for World Freedom whose membership includes antisemites and Nazi sympathizers. Sarah Palin's husband was a member of a treasonous secessionist political party with ties to Iran, and Sarah Palin herself delivered an address to their convention. And all you've got is an e-mail asking where Obama got his college and travel money without ANY evidence whatsoever? You're hilarious.
Feel free to use that.
8:47PM
13 minutes to go. HEH?!
8:49PM
The corporate media has proved that no matter what the Republicans do -- no matter how racist and ridiculous they become, they'll always be regarded as a serious party.
NEW THREAD! HEH?!

If McCain gets asked about the economy and he pivots to attack Obama, I think it will entirely backfire.
As per usual, the MSM will lap it up, but the polls will show the true reactions of people.

Everyone keeps saying that Obama should fight back.
It might be better if he were to respond with "I don't want to get distracted by inane attacks... let's get back to the economy. What I think is..."
Wouldn't that really highlight the difference between the two?

Bad sign, I'm already yawning--long day. May have to mix Vault cola with the wine.
Already sick of MSNBC. AssholeDobbs was on CNN--not an option--and Fixed is never an option. What to do.

I'll be drinking red wine tonight as symbolism for the virtual blood I want to see flow on the townhall stage tonight. If the gloves are REALLY off then I want to see some cracked skulls. It's time for an out-and-out brawl of ideology. Charity vs. Greed. Truth vs. Lies. Good vs. Evil. Political armageddon!! Let's just hope it's our man left standing.

I agree Carl, but the constant Ayers drumbeat is not helpful. And it is such a non-story. It really is amazing how every right-wing TP gets mentioned ad-nauseum.

I'm out of rum. I want to go get another bottle, but that would be a bad idea. Only gonna get a short nap before work as it is.
Cheers, Cescians. Is there a drinking game in play?
I suggest sips only for the creepy, Uncle Fester-ish "Hennnnh" and straight shots for the aggressive "That's a LIE and You KNOW IT!"

I'm really disgusted by the turn McCain & Palin have taken. Seriously, it's Hitler condemning the Jews all over again to get the crowd in a frenzy.
Posted by: Broadway Carl
at October 7, 2008 8:03 PM
I really do hope that after Obama wins in a landslide that the Enquirer or some other outfit drags that walking cesspool Palin through the mud on her drug addled kids, her AIP associations, her Troopergate mess, her tax mess, her adultery, and her LIE that Trigg is her baby--
She is a despicable human being--and maybe I am engaging in the same thing she is, but she really needs to be shown to be the fraud that she is--
Posted by: JG
at October 7, 2008 8:04 PM
If McCain comes out tonight and tries to play nice and go into story-time and doesn't attack, and then Palin continues to attack, then I think it will be abundantly clear that Palin is going to take all of the blame for losing.
Posted by: J M Ashby
at October 7, 2008 8:05 PM
I think they believe that this is done. Their only recourse is to attack and attack ugly. And in McCain's eyes, Palin is expendable. Her career will be over after this campaign should they lose and the McCain campaign could really give a shit about her. I wonder if she knows she's being used?
Posted by: Broadway Carl
at October 7, 2008 8:09 PM
Her career's not over. She'll be the new talking head on Faux News.

Bob--
The "heh" is brilliant--Stephanie Miller has been using that as sound effect--hilarious.

McCain's idea of playing nice is to say "my friends" just before smearing Obama
Posted by: ceu

I just want to see McCain lose his shit on national television. Just a complete and total meltdown. Please. Please.
Posted by: LeeroyJenkins

I don't think so, JG. They only go for younger hotties who have a better speaking voice with less of a twang. Besides, she wouldn't leave Alaska for a job other than in the White House.
Posted by: Broadway Carl
at October 7, 2008 8:14 PM
She probably doesn't realize shes being used if after every campaign event she has senior advisers whispering goodjob in her ear.
When she said she didn't even blink when asked to run, I really dont believe that. I would be more willing to believe that a bunch of mccain advisros showed up at her door and told her how great she will be and how easy it will be and she believed them.
Then when they figured out they were wrong they began to set her up to take all the blame for losing.
Posted by: J M Ashby

I swear I am in bizarro land--why, again, is KO the only one putting Palin's vile rhetoric into context.

8 years of the Bush media has brought us to this.
Posted by: J M Ashby
at October 7, 2008 8:18 PM
Just watched KO do a great job of blasting the McCain campaign on inciting the mob. Watching Palin wink as she spewed untruths and listened to "Joe Six Pack" yell "Kill him" made me sick to my stomach. At this point, it's beyond politics. This is a person's life we are talking about here. It's one thing to talk about a person's stand on universal healthcare, a timeline in Iraq, but to willing incite a crowd of redneck, racist, probably mentally unstable people to want to kill someone? If something happens to Obama, "Pitbull" Palin and "The Artist Formerly Known As Honorable" McCain will have blood on their hands.
Posted by: KatinWilm

@ JG - because it would destroy the whole hockey-mom-joe-six-pack-barracuda meme that they've set up for her. The media no longer objectively reports, it creates the scenario out of whole cloth and doesn't like to be proven wrong.
Palin is the regular hockey mom, and it can't be anything different. It's funny how the right was attacking Michelle Obama a few months ago as a black, radical militant, but Todd Palin's association in the AIP isn't even mentioned. Not funny really, more incredibly sad.

Carl you are so right--they come up with these nonsense ZOMBIE narratives, and then reinforce them--facts be damned. I cannot tell you how many times I heard the BBQ pit say Palin was very strong on energy in the debate--huh? What becuase she mentioned the words "energy independence." That's policy strength? No it's BBQ narrtives at play--
Posted by: JG
