Miss South Carolina

More attention needs to be paid to the following answer by Sarah Palin. This response showed a complete lack of understanding of the very basic constitutional job description of the vice presidency and it echoed the view of Dick Cheney:

I'm thankful the Constitution would allow a bit more authority given to the vice president if that vice president so chose to exert it in working with the Senate and making sure that we are supportive of the president's policies and making sure too that our president understands what our strengths are.

But when Ifill followed up, we got this animatronic Miss South Carolina display of nothingness and such as:

Well, our founding fathers were very wise there in allowing through the Constitution much flexibility there in the office of the vice president. And we will do what is best for the American people in tapping into that position and ushering in an agenda that is supportive and cooperative with the president's agenda in that position. Yeah, so I do agree with him that we have a lot of flexibility in there, and we'll do what we have to do to administer very appropriately the plans that are needed for this nation. And it is my executive experience that is partly to be attributed to my pick as V.P. with McCain, not only as a governor, but earlier on as a mayor, as an oil and gas regulator, as a business owner. It is those years of experience on an executive level that will be put to good use in the White House also.

WHAT THE CRAP?!

Senator Biden clarifies it for us:

Vice President Cheney has been the most dangerous vice president we've had probably in American history. The idea he doesn't realize that Article I of the Constitution defines the role of the vice president of the United States, that's the Executive Branch. He works in the Executive Branch. He should understand that. Everyone should understand that.

[Correction: I originally wrote "Ms. North Carolina." My apologies to whoever that might be, as well as my humble apologies to the good people of North Carolina who I hope will vote for Senator Obama en masse in November.]

Dear FSM, Bob, correct thyself, I and others beseech you. That was Miss SOUTH Carolina.

I, Kat, Pecos, Dontpanic, Tim, and others (speak up!!) thank you.

The Constitution made the duties of the Vice President very clear - and it doesn't include flexibility.

Oh, jane, jane, jane. picky, picky, picky.

My impression of this debate is that she was prepared to sell herself in a George-Bush-Like manner.

In that respect, she did a good job. The problem is that isn't going to work this time.

Curious George won with that strategy because at the time the country really didn't have any huge problems and Bill just got a good blowjob at his desk all the "innocent" people out there were somehow offended.

This time around no one wants to hear random talking points just pulled from their rectum. People want to know how THEIR problems are going to be fixed.

Focusing on the middle class and healthcare will win the day for Obama/Biden. I can personally relate to the healthcare situation with my parents having a hell of a time even getting insurance to start with, nevermind that it would cost 800 dollars per month if they did actually get it.

Cheers, JM. I thought there were several times when the difference between R and D was distinct, and on our side this time, like health care. And the Iraq and such as.

Posted by: jane [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:35 PM

JM, I have no health insurance. I can't afford to see a doctor - haven't been in many years. McCain's $5K tax credit will do absolutely nothing for me. Nothing. And nothing for the 47 million others like me.
The idea is apparently to let us die out....

Posted by: ceu [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:39 PM

She's a total and complete BOOB!

Worse. Than. Bush.

For fuck sake I'm listening to pundits on CNN say that she held her own.

When I hold my own it's called masturbation, and honestly jacking off is better than what she did tonight!

Posted by: kansasdem [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:39 PM

IMO that moment WAS the debate. It was the only question asked that didn't allow Palin to recall a preprogrammed response. She had to "think" that one through...and it showed. Too bad the Reptiles aren't gonna see it that way.

Carrying on Elvis' apt NFL analogy. She does fantastic at running plays as they are taught to her. What she sucks at is playing an actual game where you have to read the defense and sometimes scramble. She's the kind of QB that would pitch the ball out - even though the halfback didn't make it to his mark, because that's how she learned the play. And now to jarringly mix metaphors - I see her as a Stepford candidate.

Has anyone else said that she's downright stupid?

I mean that. She's dumb as a box of rocks!

Posted by: kansasdem [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:46 PM

God I hate Pat Buchanan. The 'Biden is boring' meme again. He's been in Washington too long and it's all statistics. I guess he'd rather have a hockey mom using 'gosh darnit' and not knowing what Article 1 of the Constitution states regarding the Vice Presidency. Dipshit.

A 5K tax credit for healthcare is an utter joke. If that credit is just given to insurance companies, then it goes from joke to farce. It would absolutely nothing to help people with real health problems.

Im only 24 and my health insurance is only 50 dollars per month. But unlike mouth-breathing mccain/palin lovers I care about others and not just myself.

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:51 PM

To the contrary - I do not think Gov. Palin is stupid, or dumb. Just ignorant.

And - unless she bones up on the constitutional limits expressed in the federal government (as she seems to have a grasp of for the State of Alaska), she should never be anywhere near executive authority for the country.

I'm feeling good. While I thought Palin "held her own," I thought Biden blew her away in showing expertise.

By the way, did the "you're so focused on the past" line remind me of Mark McGwire in the senate saying "I'm not here to talk about the past?"

I'd like to know why one other than Matthews has brought up Palin saying "I've been at this like 5 weeks"

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 2, 2008 11:59 PM

Um...I do believe that was Ms. South Carolina. Normally I wouldn't care, but I think credit should be given where credit is due in situations such as this.......

Rachel should challenge Pat to let her manage his Stock Portfolio for the next 4 weeks if he thinks she's so smart and fresh.

Tell ALL the Right-Wing BloHards to put up their portfolios or shut up about how everyone thinks she'd be great 'cause she's just like them.

Posted by: LiveFreeOrDie08 [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 12:04 AM

I caught the "five long weeks" remark, but I didn't hear Matthews bring it up...so Tweety did catch that one? Huh...times they are a changin'...

Posted by: Leigh [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 12:05 AM

Seriously, Palin said she was middle class...You know, she's only worth something like $1.2 million. Damn, if that's the new middle class, I'm totally impoverished.

Biden is ahead 60-40 in.... the Foxnews poll.. haha

Posted by: J M Ashby [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 12:11 AM

Hah, I thought maybe Bob meant like waaay-North Carolina. Johnny Horton style. Miz Northern Lights South Carolina.
Here's the link to the Foxnews poll, so you can register your opinion too (61% to 39% as of now). Scroll down to Question of the Day:

UP! Up is how I'm speaking! Jane is correct. Thanks for fixing that Bob. We are still carrying the burden of several decades of Jesse Helms who was NOT dumb but was very evil (if you believe in that stuff--if not evil then he was just plain mean: a puppy kicker).

Posted by: dontpanic23 [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 07:52 AM

Shit that Faux news poll must be making the liberal blog rounds bigtime. No way the cows who drop in there would vote 60-40 Biden. That would make me think there is hope and we can't have that when it concerns Those People. I tried that way of thinking in '04 and '00. Not any more. I only hope we can maneuver around them in numbers and that they don't figure out how to cheat again.

Posted by: dontpanic23 [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 07:56 AM

One of the many things driving me crazy last night was how much she said the word "also."

I just went through the transcript and counted - it was 48.

(To put it in perspective, Senator Biden only said it 3 times.)

I am so glad I set my 'American's Abroad' alarm in London for 2.00am to see the debate. I got so anxious with all posted concerns of how Joe might blow it, I almost couldn't bear to watch. But he just got better with each passing moment. He was gracious, witty, passionate and intelligent - indignant too at the appropriate moment. Finest moment - nailing the governor on the VP Constitutional issue. Sarah Palin increasingly went into auto mode and just repeated phrases in a meaningless succession. Quite bizarre! Enough! I am used to people hating us because of our foreign policy, but to be laughed at is quite another matter.

Posted by: Phoenicia [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 3, 2008 11:35 AM

Okay, I heard it, but reading it here today gave me a jolt. Palin only stopped being incoherent when she was blatantly, out-in-left-field WRONG. I mean the term "blithering" could have been coined to describe her attempts at articulation here. On the question of the role of the Vice President. Unfrickinbelievable.
