A Better Man Than I
by Lee Stranahan
News that Barack Obama wants to keep Joe Lieberman in the Democratic caucus is really just another indication of why he's the anti-Bush. I don't like Lieberman any more than any other random progressive blogger but I can also seldom argue with mercy.
In that vein, I'd be remiss if I didn't compare Barack Obama's character with that of George W. Bush, who once mocked death row inmate Karla Faye Tucker's plea for her life to be spared.
So put away your liberal bloodlust, my friends .I don't think we'll get the war crime tribunals many have wished on Bush and Cheney. I think we'll get something much better; a truly decent f-cking human being in the White House.

I know that I felt during the debates that Obama should have attacked McCain more - especially during the first debate, but I realized that would have gone completely against his character. Barack Obama is a gentleman. As much as I would like to see Joe Lieberman crushed like the little cockroach that he is, Obama is not that type of man. He is also not going to engage in the kind of petty retribution that often comes along with power - the type that Bush and Cheney engaged in. We do have a truly decent fucking human being in the White House. (I'll say it since you can't, Lee)

Gosh Bob. If only Prop.8 hadn't passed, you could've married Obama in Cali.

I disagree, and hope that Obama (and Reid) have plans to politically leave Lieberman in the dust heap AFTER the media attention of doing so is off.
Lieberman is, beyond all else, a traitor. A Fredo. I gotta think at some point,a metaphorical trip to the lake is going to occur. Of course, at the moment, there's kissing on the cheek. But the rowboat ride is coming.
If not, then Reid and Obama will have earned the knife in the back that will inevitably come from Lieberman at some point in the future. It is the story of the frog and the scorpion; he can't help it-- it is his nature to betray and sting.
He did it to everyone who ever "wronged" him; especially here in CT after the Lamont insurgency.

Lieberman hasn't proven to be a threat to Obama so far.
I understand the emotion but honestly; Obama makes me feel like the higher path IS the right one to take.

I already threw Lieberman under the bus. But it's got me wondering what strategem Obama is going to play. He's got the mandate and I'm sure he's waved it under Joe's nose (Like he would have to do that, but you never know) to see if Joe can get onboard and redeem himself, or if he's gonna get thrown back under the bus.
Joe just might be useful, in an idiot way. He's in play and that doesn't bother me in the least.

On another thought, Obama could simply be softening him up. Rather than let Reid throw him under, maybe Obama wants to throw him under if he doesn't want to be useful. Maybe Lieberman is a steak thrown Rahm-bo's way to send a message to the spineless Dems to get stuff right now or watch what will happen to you.

Calling Lieberman a "Fredo" is an insult to Fredo.
But, with some sadness and regret, I do agree that Obama's integrity would indicate his only road would be the high one.
Still, I would have enjoyed a good war crime tribunal or three................

I'm lovin' the Godfather II references. Our new president's favorite movie (mine too! although i'm partial to the second one).
So if Obama's Michael and Lieberman is Fredo, who's Biden? Who's Emanuel? ;-)

I just posted on the thread that I thought his recommendation to leave Lieberman in the party shows Obama has the wisdom of King Solomon. I think Lieberman was hoping he would get a good spanking.

Lee I don't think this has much to do with mercy.

This is Obama being pragmatic. There will come a day when Lieberman's vote is needed to stop a fillibuster. Obama is all about getting things done, and not screwing around with vendettas and other non-essentials. Which isn't to say that he doesn't think Lieberman is an asshole, he's just potentially a useful one.

I agree with eastwest. Obama is damn smart! Politics is one thing, serving we the people is another!
Our Obama is ready to lead and serve we the people!
And I just heard the words "Jesse the plumber"!
