Callie Shell's Obama Photo Journal

The complete set here.

It was primary morning in New Hampshire. Barack and Michelle Obama had been campaigning separately all week. In the first few months of 2008 their private time seemed to consist of a few crossover moments in back hallways before rallies. This moment was rare and you could tell they just loved being able to sit together. Jan. 8, 2008. © Callie Shell / Aurora for Time

These two boys waited as a long line of adults greeted Senator Obama before a rally on Martin Luther King Day in Columbia, S.C. They never took their eyes off of him. Their grandmother told me, "Our young men have waited a long time to have someone to look up to, to make them believe Dr. King's words can be true for them." Thanks for sharing these. I just loved looking at all of them. Some of them gave me goosebumps and and they all made me know that we made the right choice.

I've probably looked at this once a week for the past month or so. Such powerful images.

Amazing photos. I especially loved the one where he is cleaning up after himself in the diner. That shows good raisin' right there. Nice job Toot.

DAMN there are good pictures in there.

Obama alone on the stairwell: I'd seen this picture before, and it struck me then. I think this is a politician who is great in front of crowds, but is comfortable enough in his own skin that he doesn't need to cling to people, like other politicians do.

The holes in the shoes: Reminds me of this Pulitzer-prize-winning picture of Adlai Stevenson. I love the fact that Obama re-soled them, instead of ditching them for a new pair.

The picture above with Michelle: I wasn't a big Michelle fan at first, but now I'm crazy about her. They obviously love each other. I would have liked to have seen more of the "terrorist fist bump", just to grind the Right's noses in it.

A truly inspirational man (and family).

What a pleasant, and needed, change form the faux cowboy.

When I stop to think how much this family endured during this election it amazes me. Still through it all, their humanity prevailed. These photos are beautiful.

Callie Shell is a truly gifted individual. Wouldn't it be great if she was hired away from TIME to be the White House photographer?
