Super Stupid

Mitt Romney and Sean Hannity think that fuel-efficiency (CAFE) standards made the Big Three go boom. Think Progress:

– MITT ROMNEY: Well, government did [cause a lot of this]. There’s no question but that the CAFE standards have put an unusual burden on the domestic automobile manufacturers. And our energy policies as a country continue to put burdens on domestic manufacturers. That’s just — that’s reality. [11/19/08]

– SEAN HANNITY: They [the government] — you know, between the unions, between trade policy, safety standards, CAFE standards, you know, economy, fuel economy standards, they’re forcing these auto companies to be in a position where they’re not as competitive. [11/14/08]

Safety standards? Hannity clearly wants a return to steel dashboards that crush skulls, and lap-belts that sever people in half at the waist. Oh and look! Bill Kristol, who has been wrong about literally everything agrees:

– WILLIAM KRISTOL: Well, one problem with the auto industry is we have been telling them how to operate an awful lot, you know, in terms of CAFE standards and other things, probably which should not have been most — may have been the most — not the most intelligent way to help that industry. [11/16/08]

Yeah, you know, because the Toyota and Honda got their asses kicked by making safe, fuel-efficient cars.

Is it any wonder why the Republicans have 1) screwed us, and 2) screwed themselves?

These are the moments when it confuses me the most that people who consider themselves values voters can support current Republicans. Imposing safety on people is too much of a burden? Do they even think before they speak?

Similarly, though on a different subject, here in Tennessee where the voters go overwhelmingly for Republicans in federal offices, we have a terrific Democrat governor. A few years ago, he was faced with some tough budget issues and had to cut enrollment on the TennCare state health care plan. People went apeshit ballistic. These are the same people who would not vote for Gore, Kerry or Obama because they were all three the most liberal this or that and were socialists who plan to Hitlerize America.

It's as though there is a wire missing, a complete disconnect between two thoughts with these people. Keeping children safe is the most important thing a family does--safe from gays but not safe from car crashes. Socialized health care is an abomination, but if you take mine away I'll sue your ass. And Whitman thought he contained multitudes. Jeebus!

Those remarks are the very definition of stupidity and dishonesty. Reading these guys is at the same time embarrassing and infuriating.

Wasn't it Arianna Huffington that used the term NEANDERTHAL to describe the Repubs during the primaries? I certainly can't think of a better word to describe that kind of idiocy!

But ......... long sigh ............. what can we expect from the "drill - baby - drill" crowd?

It's typical Republicanism to spout bullshit in the face of reality. Lax regulations contributed to the economic crash? Well then, blame regulations and advocate even less regulations!

The WSJ has a new article doing this, coupled with another great Republican tactic - scapegoating certain people. Who is it this time, liberals again? Oh no, why it's atheists of course. Yes, atheists and the failure of people to say "Merry Christmas" are to blame, for they killed morals and if we had morals, then... wait for it.... then we could trust those in Wall St to do the right thing without regulations. Ta-da!

The thing is, the people who run Faux news KNOW that their faithful watchers take everything said as gospel. They get several people - including unbiased experts - to repeat the line of BS over and over and it becomes the truth. Then the lemmings repeat it. If t wasn't so insidious, it would be remarkable to watch.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard Steve Forbes talking about how CAFE kept the big 3 from importing their own foreign-built, fuel-efficient models [funny aside that they can & do make more economical vehicles were the market demands them). What a hoot that now it's the requirement to be fuel efficient that's the culprit. And the unions; you knew it would be the unions. Also.

PS: I caught part of a blurb last night (CBS I think) that discussed business ethics of the Japanese automakers - the CEO of Toyota reportedly makes about $1 million/year.
