There Will Always Be Fire-Eaters
I agree with BooMan that the Southern Strategy isn't dead -- in the south, that is. In fact, it'll be used to divide white and black southerners more often during this Republican decline. Anything to hold on to voters. So it's likely that in 2010, we'll actually see an uptick in racial fear-mongering.
But where the Southern Strategy was an epic fail, and will be rolled-out less frequently, is in the northern and western states. In Pennsylvania, for instance, the around-the-clock Rev. Wright ads failed miserably and the Obama margin of victory here was huge compared to Kerry's four years ago. So the Southern Strategy is almost dead in this year's blue states.

I can only imagine that this trend will continue. Just as fear mongering failed to work this year, I'm going to guess that the Southern Strategy will be less effective in 2010 and we'll see a further shift to the Democratic side, provided Obama has a successful first 18 months in office of course.

The other tactic that will continue to work in the South is to pit the working poor against the truly destitute: The evil liberal democrats (never, ever, say dems without the leading liberal) want to take all your hard earned money and give it to the shiftless and lazy.
Perhaps this is more a corollary than separate approach since those evil blacks and illegal immigrants are the prime "offenders".
