Epic Fail

This morning:

Here we see Rick Warren comparing homosexuality with a variety of negative impulses and emotions. Actually, I was half-expecting him to make the usual gaffe relating homosexuality to a birth defect. He didn't go that far, but it was close.

Just to recap here's the Warren statement that disqualifies him. Try putting this into the context of an old-timey racist talking about interracial marriage:

Rick Warren: But the issue to me is, I’m not opposed to that as much as I’m opposed to the redefinition of a 5,000-year definition of marriage. I’m opposed to having a brother and sister be together and call that marriage. I’m opposed to an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage. I’m opposed to one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage.

Steven Waldman: Do you think, though, that they are equivalent to having gays getting married?

Rick Warren: Oh I do.

I like how he subtly ties homosexuality with the inability to remain monogamous (not that I'm a huge proponent of that, but still).

Also nice creep-out moment when he says he's inclined to make bone with every woman he sees. Way to be pastor Rick. Purpose driven indeed. (In this case, the Purpose is his dick).

im really struggling with this rick warren thing.yes,im repulsed by his comments.and yes,i think it was an awful idea for pe obama to invite him to inauguration.however...
my sister is a fairly liberal woman.she works for the SPCA.she's completely anti-gun.she cries when she sees images of slavery.unless you happen to engage her about gay marriage, she seems perfectly reasonable.we have had hundreds of vicious screaming matches when it comes to the issue.yet because of her religious beliefs, the fact that she will always insist that people are "born gay",she will never be able to see it as a civil rights issue.and thats the problem with most people on the wrong side of this issue.until someone can prove to them that its not a choice, they will always feel they are right.

What a douche bag!

Posted by: kansasdem at December 19, 2008 10:55 AM

I'm sorry, I still can't get that worked up about this "issue."

My youngest sister is a lesbian and I want her to be able to marry the girl of her dreams... just like I did. But, frankly, all the hooha over Warren's two minutes on stage brings this to mind.

Nothing Obama does can be wrong! Absolutely nothing!

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 11:13 AM

What folks seem to be forgetting is that President-elect Obama DIDN'T invite Warren at all! He was invited by a committee of senators-- republican & conservative. I wish I had the link to back this, it's in the GDAB archive, if I remember correctly.

Okay, okay. After reading Joe Cutbirth's post over at HuffPo and reflecting on this entire situation, I'm switching my support back to Bob. I know this makes me some sort of flip-flopper because I've been trying to understand Obama's pick strategically, but this is way more than strategy we're talking about here. And that's where Obama, and people like me who tried to justify his pick, went wrong. While Warren isn't going to have an impact on the way the country is run, his presence is a symbolic step in the wrong direction. I still contend that it should serve as a wake up call. We still have a long way to go before this civil rights movement is over.

From the AP about the U.S. refusing to sign the U.N. declaration condemning anti-homosexuality laws.

More than 50 countries opposed to the declaration, including members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, issued a joint statement Thursday criticizing the initiative as an unwarranted attempt to give special prominence to gays and lesbians. The statement suggested that protecting sexual orientation could lead to "the social normalization and possibly the legalization of deplorable acts" such as pedophilia and incest.

Way to go, Mr. Warren. Perhaps Saddleback Church can join the Organization of the Islamic Conference...?

This fat fuck with his Chuck-Todd-stylee "goatee to simulate angularity on a dough-rounded face" facial hair apparently doesn't feel the need to struggle against his natural predisposition to gain weight, though.

Seriously, the time for rationalizing, apologizing and enabling this kind of vile creepiness is over. It is like, to use a Warren-esque analogy, trying to find the *least* egregious child molester in a group of child molesters.

Sure, if you want, as an academic exercise, to quantify on a sliding scale which of these folks is 'best' as compared to the other, you COULD.

But it is just trying to figure out who is the leper with the MOST nose.

Fuck him.

Posted by: josh at December 19, 2008 11:53 AM

ARRGH! The more I think about this, the more I want to plant my shoe in neck(s.)

He's "naturally inclined" to have sex with every beautiful woman he meets?

But beautiful women would be "naturally inclined" to rebuff his pudgy advances, as he is an uappealling toad. So he's saying his natural inclination is to rape, I think, if you kind of play out his thought... But he's "good" enough to stop his "natural" urges, and yay him.

Ew, ew and ewww. This kind of guy is why I want my daughters to be proficient in the use of knives and mace.

And I'm sorry for making this so ad hominem, but this greasy bastard talks about DELAYED GRATIFICATION as a sign of virtue and character, over his 3rd chin?

So is are Sloth and Gluttony like the Gummos of the Marx Brothers of Deadly Sins?

I anxiously await his eventual sex/embarrassing-flavored-porn scandal.

Posted by: josh at December 19, 2008 12:08 PM

Grr! No edit button. As you can see, dude gets me frothing (and typo) mad.

Posted by: josh at December 19, 2008 12:10 PM

Josh, why can't you accept this gift?

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 12:12 PM

PROGRESS:
To move forward.

REGRESS:
To move backward.

If we want to PROGRESS, we cannot try to meet in the middle with those who wish to REGRESS. That means you have not moved. If you have not moved, you have not made any progress.

Seems simple enough, any way.

And I've always thought of sloth as more of a Zeppo.

Posted by: Kyle W. at December 19, 2008 12:16 PM

My, he is a repulsive little shit, isn't he? I hear gluttony is also wrong, and clearly Mr. Warren has a natural predisposition to that, which he isn't reigning in at all, so what’s his point?

What about Frank Schaeffer. He supported Obama's candidacy, but differs with Obama's beliefs at the same time. Or Billy Graham? He can still pray, right? Can he pray via satellite from his home or something?

Posted by: Leigh [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2008 12:16 PM

Yes. Billy Graham. An antisemite would be excellent.

Or have both Graham and Warren yell while the crowd throws rotten fruit at Barney Frank.

Posted by: Kyle W. at December 19, 2008 12:19 PM

Sorry. Didn't know Billy Graham is an antisemite. He's prayed with many of our other presidents.

Do we really need a prayer? How about a moment of silence instead?

Oh man, this. Kyle do you have a blog?

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 12:28 PM

Is his objectifying "beautiful women" a gift too?
cuz i much would have preferred a pony

Posted by: JennyDemilo [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2008 12:31 PM

"I anxiously await his eventual sex/embarrassing-flavored-porn scandal."

Thats funny, i was talking to a couple of sex worker friends and we were musing how he's EXACTLY the kind of guy who bangs hookers. The hooker biz is very big in the OC and my guess his personal sex scandal will involve the pay for play ladies. If that ever does happen i dont know if i will be able to contain my laughter...

Is this a sting operation I smell brewing?

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 12:39 PM

He does look like a fat Chuck Todd, doesn't he? I don't know, I still can't get outraged about this. Maybe I'm just "naturally" a calm person, but I'm not going to let this ruin the inauguration for me. I do not believe Barack Obama did this to slight the GLBT community, even though it certainly does that to an extent. I think it was a mistake to have him there and we have every right to express our outrage. I would invite people to read this http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/12/taking-yes-for.html It's not going to change anybody's mind but it's an interesting perspective.

"Is this a sting operation I smell brewing?"

naw... just a prediction :D

Posted by: JennyDemilo [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2008 12:57 PM

Wow so all gays want multiple partners. Hmmm I must be doing something wrong then.

Like many of those leaving comments this is a struggle for me. I wish I could see this as a way to bring everyone together. But to me it is giving the extreme right wing more of a spotlight.

I do appreciate Ann being so shocked and disgusted at this guys answers. I can't wait to see the whole interview just to watch how many times she raises her hands to the air in a gesture of "seriously - WTF." Could make for a good drinking game.

Posted by: Lezzymom at December 19, 2008 12:58 PM

Damn Jenny you or a friend could have totally taken a fat white pasty one for the team.

Unless of course Pastor Warren bats from the other side of the plate...

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 1:04 PM

I love how when he says, "I'm naturally inclined to have sex with every beautiful woman I see" they flash back to the interviewer looking uncomfortable.

Yeah, you, honey.

But yeah, it's an "epic failure."
Obama is really revealing his mark of the beast-- or mark of Harold Ford-- with his actions since he won the election.

Posted by: MG at December 19, 2008 1:08 PM

Well i didn't say there's not a bunch of us keeping our eyes open down in the OC for a pudgy minister type who desperately needs to be in control at the same time hes confirming his fuckability!

>>Well i didn't say there's not a bunch of us keeping our eyes open down in the OC for a pudgy minister type who desperately needs to be in control at the same time hes confirming his fuckability!

I'd imagine people in your industry keep an eye out for that type regardless.

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 1:17 PM

Are you kidding me Travis, that's a large part of our clientele, especially down in the OC. Maybe not the "minister" type but the rest of it .. oh hell ya.

Posted by: JennyDemilo [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2008 1:24 PM

I think the official body type of Tustin is white and doughy.

I have an old blog that I've been thinking of resurrecting. Who knows, maybe I could double my previous performance and get 10 hits per month.

Posted by: Kyle W. at December 19, 2008 1:31 PM

I have 20 a month if you want somewhere to vent.

Posted by: Travis D at December 19, 2008 2:20 PM

I think 5 of those 20 are from me Travis..ha!
