Obama on Warren
In his press conference just now, the president-elect made the expected argument in favor of Rick Warren -- basically (paraphrasing) there are a lot of opinions in America and the inauguration will reflect that.
However, an opinion like Warren's -- comparing same-sex marriage to pedophilia -- doesn't deserve a seat at the big boy table. People like Warren are obviously entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't mean we should give such quackery any more deference than, say, moon landing deniers.

I'm of the opinion that snow is actually a hoax perpetrated by the trilateral commission and Dr. Spock's ghost. Do I get to be poet laureate now?

So, a little bit of "soft" bigotry and hate is okey-dokey with the O man... as long as it falls under the guise of a "deeply held religious belief."
I hate to say it, but after South Carolina I expected this kind of bullshit from him.

This kind of scolding is odd, in that it it was an active act of invitation on Obama's part. There are a lot of opinions in the country that Obama is a Muslim. 25% of the electorate in Texas, in fact.
Do we have to honor that opinion, too?
You know who FDR should have had at his? Were nazi bundists.

While I understand why people don't like Warren, I think the whole thing is a tad ridiculous. I think Warren is an ass, a rather large one to be sure. However, there aren't a lot of pro gay rights, pro-life, pro-liberal religious folks out there to give the prayer. Also, Obama has picked one of the few pro-our views religious guys for another prayer in his inauguration. Reading sites like DKos and the like leads me to believe that people love to rip people down when they don't do what they want. This attitude is the true lasting affect of the Bush presidency. The arguments I read are that Warren might go up and start yelling about evil gays and such...give me a break. If I was Obama, and I am not, I would have picked someone else. However, he is a person and he will offend people with his actions from time to time. I am sure the right hates the liberal pastor that he chose as well. I stand with my GLBT people and fight for the FULL equal rights. However, there are much bigger things than fucking Rick Warren. How about we talk about Cheney confession about torture, or GW Bush's "So What" attitude about Iraq. Those are real battles, not whether or Warren gives a prayer, which will be so vanilla most won't even remember it. Warren's attitude on gays and pro-life issues is really par for the course for the religious in this country. So unless Obama planned on picking an atheist I find the argument pretty empty. Even the liberal pastors has some issue with one or more liberal ideas: Church and State separation, religious equivalency, or something else. How about we just take religion out of the inauguration all together...that is an argument I can get behind. However, choosing one religious zealot over another is pointless.

While we're talking about discriminatory remarks, maybe you can think of a different way to say "big boy table" that isn't gendered.

Why hasn't Obama picked an Asian person for his inauguration speech? or Hindu? The criticisms are getting well past the point of ridiculous.

Hell way doest he just get David Miscavige. If you're going to go for wingnuttery on inauguration day, i say do it up right and don't half ass it an then back peddle it.

Seriously. If you're gonna pick a pastor from the Evangelical side, Warren is the best one. Compare him to Falwell. SO much better. Has gay rights for us become like abortion for them? The end all be all that stops everything else? Why can't we be better than them?
