Gupta vs. Moore

While I think the choice for Gupta as Surgeon General isn't bad, the way Gupta tried to smear Michael Moore on healthcare was indicative of everything I find loathesome about the establishment media. Krugman:

You don’t have to like Moore or his film; but Gupta specifically claimed that Moore “fudged his facts”, when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong. [...]

It’s sort of a minor-league version of the way people who pointed out in real time that Bush was misleading us into war are to this day considered less “serious” than people who waited until it was fashionable to reach that conclusion.

That was one of the more ridiculous aspects of the dark ride. "Less serious" is an understatement. Until Katrina, you couldn't really rip into the president without being treated like a freak. What made this dynamic truly frustrating was that most of the ripping was factually accurate. Moore was way ahead of the curve on the Bush administration, and if the establishment media had been paying more attention, who knows where we'd be today.

Gupta's a corporatist, and now right wingers can say "even your Surgeon General doesn't believe in socialized medicine".

I loathe Gupta. His ego forms its own galaxy.

And speaking about being ahead of the curve on the whole Bush debacle - dont forget the Dixie Chicks. They spoke out against him way before it was fashionable and were villified (sp) by their own fans and nearly ruined their careers.

And remember kids, if you're a member of the United States Air Force Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit and you've got a political beef with Mr. The Michael Moore, by all means threaten his life in public. That's what you're there for, right? Defend the Constitution, dispose of some explosive ordinance, beat Michael Moore senseless with a baseball bat. Chickenshit GI Jerkoffs.

I especially love how the shit-lipped Deliverance reject in the front row had to edit his own cardboard sign because he wasn't clever enough to get his scatalogical genius correct the first time. The brave men of USAF's EOD, ladies and gentlemen.

But Elvis, these colors don't run.

I'm trying to decide where to send this picture. The Southern Poverty Law Center's Hatewatch blog is one idea; the ACLU is another, but they bring a certain Liberal stigma to the table that might be counterproductive. I'd love to send it straight to Rachel Maddow, as she's writing a book about the history of the military's role in U.S. politics (and hopefully vice-versa, which is much more terrifying), but she probably wouldn't bother with these dicks.

I was going to just bring the photo to the attention of the EOD's base commander, but I'd rather embarrass these guys publicly. Their faces should be on the news, they should be made an example of.

The name of the blog itself is telling, btw.

Yeah, he's a scary Colonial Marine, which means he fantasizes about being torn into pieces by Aliens with acid for blood. That's good stuff.

Dick.

Elvis, I support your effort to ensure that our military folk have a commitment to protecting the lives of Americans, even the ones they don't like. If you need any letter writers, phone callers, or whatever, do let us know. I will support.

Having said that, I detest Michael Moore. If Gupta trashed him, it doesn't rank as something I'm going to hold against him. He brings out the worst in people, and he does it on purpose. I don't like people like that.

>>If Gupta trashed him, it doesn't rank as something I'm going to hold against him

Regardless of the substance of Gupta's argument, it would seem. Well played!

Travis - I'll acknowledge the miserableness of the mainstream media, of which Gupta was a part. Of course, acknowledging the corporatist bent of the media means acknowledging that Gupta's arguments get filtered through the lens his bosses will find acceptable....

Which means if he's the Surgeon General, his arguments will have a brand new filter.

people who arent way right wingnuts-y'know,the "liberal media"- are beginning to swallow whole and regurgitate the narrative being peddled by karl rove and the rest of the "bush legacy" gangsters.the idea that despite iraq, katrina, torture, illegal wiretapping, valerie plame/scooter libby, the crimes against the environment etc...bush really was a pretty great pres. since he kept us safe for 7 1/2 years(unless you count the 3,000 dead from 9/11 or the 4,000+ soldiers in iraq or the people in new orleans).bush only has this bad reputation because of the unfair manner in which the "liberal media" has treated him.if 70-80 percent of americans think hes done a shit job,why is it unfair to report that hes done a shit job?especially considering the fact that the media has let him off the hook on issue after issue.if 85 percent of the country believe we are on the wrong track, what exactly is all this good news being withheld from us?

Well done.

I love how the "support the troops" bullshit faded quickly. Americans (read: born morons) realized that the Iraq war was waged to establish the four oil companies (with executive offices in the largest embassy in the world) and that the troops are mostly a collection of retards-- ESPECIALLY the ones who continue to allow themselves to exploited for such a purpose.

Does anyone watch those prison shows on MSNBC?Support our prison guards. At least they are doing something purposeful. Jesus christ-- I wouldn't do that work for $500/hr.

Ezra Klein made some surprisingly great points in favor of this appointment the other night on KO.

I agree that the medical marijuana issue is a travesty, especially since my father is suffering from lung cancer and marijuana is one of the only things that can keep him alive during chemo.

But it makes sense from the angle that this is a person that middle america knows and, to a degree, trusts. Gupta's massive ego means too that by being so elevated, he'd be willing to sign onto nearly ANYTHING, health-insurance-policy-wise.

The SG is, at this point, a public heath PR/Communications director to the nation. Just addressing sort of "simple" issues would be huge-- obesity, diet, nutrition-awareness,etc.

If he could do that with ANY amount of success,he'd accomplish a lot more than the last 5 SG's combined.
