Richardson Withdraws

by Lee Stranahan

NBC reports Bill Richardson is withdrawing his nomination as commerce secretary, citing a federal probe. Smart move, even if nothing improper went on - and my gut instinct is that nothing improper did go on.

Maybe he'll end up as the second Secretary Of State in a few years. Anyway, might make my impending move to New Mexico more interesting.

This is sad, but I undertand that there is no need to give the R's any fodder during a confirmation process. They'll be making up enough shit as it is.
I hope the investigation of the CA firm continues posthaste.
If I understand the story right, Richardson is not the target of any investigation.
I hope there is nothing that implies any wrongdoing on his part.

@SillyGit - the correct spelling is "ratcheer"

Packy's got a point. Right now the Republicans are at battle stations and moving into full-on obstructionist mode. They'll cling to even the slightest impropriety, however far removed the nominee is from it.

Get ready for insane republican political theater.

Here's where I split with you guys on issues like this. Both parties are susceptible to this kind of corruption; it's been done for decades and decades. Here's why I think Richardson is guilty:

"A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico state contract worth more than $1 billion."

If I had a dollar for every time I've heard of a scenario similar to this one in state politics, I'd be retired at 41. Indeed, how DOES an out of state contractor land a one billion dollar contract in New Mexico?

Richardson is innocent until proven guilty. Just don't be surprised if he is found guilty. Collusion, contract fixing, and contribution rewarding is the oldest game state governors play.

Better men than Bill Richardson have played that game and won.
