The Road to 60 Votes?
President Obama could ask Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH) to take the Secretary of Commerce post vacated by would-be nominee Bill Richardson.
If Gregg takes the gig, New Hampshire's Democratic governor, John Lynch, could appoint a Democrat to fill the seat.
And so... 60 votes in the Senate.
But I doubt this will happen. Gregg would never be able to show himself in Republican circles. Mobsters in witness protection would have better chances of survival.

You are underestimating the selfishness of republicans.

Nate Silver over on fivethirtyeight.com wrote an interesting perspective on this, essentially saying that even IF this were to happen, 60 votes sounds better than the benefits actually would be.

It could happen if Obama shows Gregg the future of his party and offer him a way out of the coming one party rule that KR dreamt of and worked towards. It's going to be the Dems.
