Another Republican Lie Debunked

Benen reports:

...as negotiations on the package wrapped up, Rahm Emanuel secured an extra $8 billion for high-speed rail. The Maine and Pennsylvania Republican "centrists" approved, and the bill progressed. The $8 billion is not directed at any specific state or project.

Of course not. There isn't any mention of a high-speed rail project connecting Disneyland and Vegas in the recovery bill. Nothing. The Republicans made it up. We seriously have to ask at this point: have the Republicans said anything that's actually truthful?

Bob, I don't believe a goddamned thing they say any more, and haven't for some time. If they would actually argue with the facts, it would be completely different. But they don't. It's strictly opposition for the sake of opposition and if lies must be used, so be it.

Isn't oppositional defiance a phychological condition?

Where are the Democratic Congressmen and Senators when these things are being spouted? They should be front-and-center pointing out the bullshit, and challenging these liars to prove the statements they are making.

Posted by: Alan4s at February 23, 2009 5:33 PM

They should be, Alan, but the GOP is all over the airways. (check the line-up on the Sunday shows...) Besides, when the lie is pointed out, the fallback position is to say that they didn't have time to read the bill before voting on it...

have the Republicans said anything that's actually truthful?
No.

"...have the Republicans said anything that's actually truthful?"

In a word: NO!

The party of "Country First" has become the party of "Country-First-As-Long-As-It's-Done-Our-Way"!

They hold fast to the ideology that got us into our present fix economically (which they deny of course), while saying and doing everything they can think of, to bring President Obama down. What's even worse, is that they don't even seem
to give a damn if the country goes down the tubes in the process!

How ANYONE in their right mind can support the GOP's way of doing things is WAY beyond my comprehension.

How I wish there was a magic button to make them - and their lies - all go away!

In this case, I fault democrats. You'd think they'd be pounding the airwaves, and being the majority party, they ought to be able to get the message out, but they are getting out hustled.

I had this very conversation on another board, and people just kept trying to figure out ways in which the lie was true... I'm sure that they still don't believe the facts because the lie is so outrageous its scary to think of our elected officials behaving this way. So they think the truth must be some kind of trick.

To be fair - the Orange County - Vegas high speed rail project is one of the more 'shovel ready' high speed projects...the newly approved LA - San Fran line is more practical, IMO but it was JUST approved.

Before I knew it wasn't true, I was listening to the GOP mouthpieces bitch about it, and kept thinking "Why is this bad? Seems like a good idea to me".

Posted by: ceu at February 23, 2009 7:35 PM

ceu: Me too. But the way it was spun, it comes across like an earmark for Harry Ried (same as the "Pelosi mouse"). The President promised no earmarks so republicans have been manufacturing earmarks out of thin air.

If no body had an opportunity to read the 1000 page bill given to them at Midnight, of course there is the potential mistakes in understanding of what's in it. What happened to the five days the public was supposed to get? I'm an independent, not a Republican for the record, and I voted for Obama, BUT I didn't like the way the bill was pushed through and signed without having legislators reading it. There seems to be about a 3-5 day spread from the first reports of Republicans making their statements from when the bill was signed. Is that enough time to fully digest 1000 pages? I dunno if it is or not. Personally, I'm tired of each side calling each other names. I'm not far left and certainly not far right, somewhere in the middle with a whole bunch of other folks who want social programs with fiscal control. I live in CA where the desire to help people has been overtaken by the lack of money to pay for it. In Los Angeles we now will have a 9.75% sales tax rate. Yikes! We are 42 BILLION dollars short on our budget and just passed the biggest tax increase in American history for any state. Intel is expanding 7000 jobs, but not in California because the taxes are so high, so the jobs go to AZ, OR and NM. I've had 3 companies in the last five years that I work for go out of business, and I'm again out of a job. The tax decrease from Obama is wiped out by the tax increase from our Democratic legislature, so how does that help? Sorry for venting, but it gets frustrating.

Joe's Coming Down*

it's coming down.
Joe's coming down.
it's raining outside.
you've nowhere to hide.
we're asking them
why they think it's funny.

it's coming down.
it's coming down.
you made up the truth.
for that I've no use.
wer're mad,
and we'll make your neilsens wither.

it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.

it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
you lie on the show.
and act like you know.
you suck,
and you're not the font of wisdom.

it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.
it's coming down.

FrankinCA -

I feel your pain. I am also unemployed.

They also lied about the amount of time they had to read the Bill. The text of the Bill was available for over thirty days to everyone. They were involved in all of the changes to that version of the text. The final version was not available until midnight as you state, but they are simply lying when they say that they had not the time to read it. If they hadn't already read it, they weren't going to read it anyway. Just another media stunt by the Greedy Obstructionist Party.

Thanks SillyGit. Can you reference where it written that the bill was available for 30 days. I would like to use that information for rebuttal for a couple of neighbors.

Thanks
