The Far-Right War On Something
I think if we summrized some of the Republican actions and reactions from the last few weeks, "cornered animals" would suffice.
Naturally, there are exceptions -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charlie Crist on the Sunday shows today were remarkably even-handed and, dare I say, realistic and sane. But for those who refuse to acknowledge that perhaps their ideology has, to some degree, failed or outlived its usefulness, their paths of last resort are becoming more and more clear:
Obstructionism: Whatever Obama is fer, we're against it.
Lies: wholly fabricated attacks, like ACORN or the CBO report or swamp mice or CRA.
Red-scare Fear-Mongering: Lots of talk about socialism and wealth redistribution without clarifying that many of our most cherished institutions involve both.
Armed Revolution: I've received more than a few e-mails threatening this, and Glenn Beck has apparently aired an entire show on FOX News detailing how such a scenario would play out.
Seriously. The Republican leadership barely has a political message outside of base obstructionism. And, on the extreme fringes, there's the "We Hate That Muslim Manchurian Communist N-Word" message. This is stuff of revolution?
By pushing this scenario, Beck and others appear to be endorsing an uprising against the largest middle class tax cut in American history; against the withdrawal of troops from a broadly unpopular foreign occupation; against providing healthcare for children; against a president who is supported by 69 percent of Americans; and led by multi-millionaires such as Rick Santelli, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity, along with congressional leaders who are only slightly more popular than Dick Cheney.
Way to go, wingnuts! You're appearing more and more serious by the day!

Bob,
Right on brother!
>>"We Hate That Muslim Manchurian Communist N-Word" message. This is stuff of revolution?
I have put a shitload of thought into this and with Bobby Jindal refusing government funding, I think we are seeing a Secessionist Movement. You hear southern congressman talk about States Rights which is code for secession/racism. If this crazy storm actually does start it will be nothing more than a WACO scenario and handled with the utmost firepower.
Posted by: GIthePotato at February 22, 2009 1:56 PM
You know one of the worst things about living in the south is that a lot of these people are still fighting the civil war. I grew up an AF brat and lived all over this country before moving here and I never realized until moving to NC that it still resonates after all these years. You know now that I am thinking about it, it reminds me of the reaction to President Obama. I am not saying it is necessarily racist, but he (me) threatens their worldview that they have had for all these many years. It really is just sad. I mean I didn't like w or how he ruined this country, but he was still the president of all of us. I don't think they will let go anytime soon. Jim over in another thread made a great case as to why and how hard it will be for them. I just wish they gave us the same respect we gave them for 8 years.

If they want to secede, I say let them.
Wait until they discover just how much money they have been sucking out of the federal teat. The rust belt has been subsidizing their ignorant asses for the past 50 years. New England could stand to keep that money to fix bridges and highways.
Someone should ask Jindal and Sanford how much money their states contribute to the federal budget. Then ask them how much federal funding is spent in their state. Then ask them what they think will happed to their economy if that speding were to stop.
These people are play acting for their underinformed audience. They will not secede because they can't stop sucking that federal teat and they know it. The rest is an act for the rubes and yokels.

>>>The Republican leadership barely has a political message outside of base obstructionism
Sure they do! Michael Steele is going to be the beyond-the-cutting-edge hip hop urban midget leader of the Republican Party. They're so far beyond the cutting edge that they're actually slicing bits of themselves off.
Also, this: Whatever Obama is fer, we're against it should probably read we aggen' it. Not that I'm stereotyping the opposition or anything...
>>>If this crazy storm actually does start it will be nothing more than a WACO scenario and handled with the utmost firepower.
I have a feeling that if there was a Waco incident on Obama's watch it would spark off a lot more crazy. See! That crazy Mooslim's killin good 'merricans! Armed resistance! Poorly spelled pamphlets! Che Guevara t-shirts for everybody!
Just kidding, they'd prolly be wearing Joe McCarthy T-shirts.

The funny thing is that when the Republicans controlled every branch of government, they acted like they weren't in power at all; they whined endlessly about the big meanie liberals. Now they really ARE out of power, and it's making them totally batshit crazy.
I detested Bush, but not once did I (or any other lefties I know) talk about rebellion, armed or otherwise. It wouldn't have even occurred to me. And now, barely a month into Obama's term we're hearing endless talk of uprising, revolt, secession, "going John Galt," etc. etc. Winning an election fair and square isn't on the table, apparently. How utterly pathetic.

Greenwald is spot-on when he calls the militias "a purely tribalistic movement motivated by fear of losing its cultural and demographic supremacy." What he's missing -- or doesn't yet appreciate -- is the Last Stand mindset of the Culture Warriors.
Obama destroyed their political theology just by being elected. Now the extreme right sees his agenda (health care for all, peacemaking abroad, and active, competent governance) as a threat to their very ability to wage Culture War, which is both means and end to them. They are losing, they are steeped in apocalyptic thinking, and Obama is their antichrist. This is their political End Times. The stakes cannot be higher.
In their minds, this is the pass at Thermopylae. Expect 300 references to abound. Here's the Wikipedia definition of "Last Stand:"
a loose military term used to describe a body of troops holding a defensive position in the face of overwhelming odds. The defensive force usually takes very heavy casualties or is completely destroyed, while also inflicting high casualties on the opponent. Except in rare exceptions, such as Rorke's Drift and the Battle of Longewala, the defending force is usually annihilated. (Emphasis mine)
If they are truly dedicated, the survivors turn to guerrilla warfare. When Representative Pete Sessions (R-Tx) favorably compared Republican opposition to the Taliban insurgency, he was previewing the Last Stand end game. What else are 'legacy projects' and think tanks for? They are the madrassahs of future insurgency.
Again, sorry to post such a long comment, Bob, but this is stuff I've been watching and writing about for YEARS.

very nicely done, again Matt
and I really enjoy your blog!
Posted by: veralynn at February 22, 2009 3:17 PM
Matt,
As a vet you understand this mentality just same way I do. My generation of soldiers call it a "Last Line of Defense" strategy. It is when all hell breaks loose and you fire everything you have in every direction before the opposing force overruns your ass. This could easily describe the "crazy" of the GOP party.
But President Obama is armed with Mind Bullets and kindness. I would not confuse his kindness with weakness and this will be the fatal mistake for the GOP/Secessionist movement.
I don't believe that this is the fringe part of the GOP. I believe it is the majority of the GOP that fells threatened and are NRA members.
Posted by: GIthePotato at February 22, 2009 3:24 PM
Bob, I think your analysis of the far right as "cornered animals" is spot on.
Is it just me, or does it seem like the far right is scared shitless of modern society? To hate government in the modern age where the alternative is Anarchy is not a position based on intelligence.
Posted by: NorCalNative at February 22, 2009 3:36 PM
Well, if it came to revolution, Santelli, Limbaugh, Beck and Hannity are the first ones I would shoot. Have you noticed how nice and fat they all are?
I am ashamed that Beck calls himself an independent.
Having said that, if it ever came to a revolution, we can be pretty certain that guys like Limbaugh and Beck wouldn't have the balls to say a ballistic hello to anyone.
Posted by: politicalpartypooper at February 22, 2009 3:42 PM
Have any of you ever watched Fatal Attraction with a critical eye? You Glenn Close's character was sending out warning signs of her instability before she EVER slept with Douglas's character. They both had their tryst anyway, right? There was no shock by either of them just how far the damned thing would go. Close's character was looking to end it all from jump. She felt like she was just no good to anyone. Meanwhile, Douglas wasn't satisfied with what he already had and was looking for a little...excitement. In other words, he wanted to do something that he'd never expect himself of doing i.e. something stupid.
Well, a majority of American people are Michael Douglas's character, and the "silent MINORITY" aka Republicans are, of course, Glenn Close's unstable bitch character. The GOP WILL NOT BE IGNORED.
America, as a whole, is, as one may have surmised, the boiled bunny rabbit.

>>>Having said that, if it ever came to a revolution, we can be pretty certain that guys like Limbaugh and Beck wouldn't have the balls to say a ballistic hello to anyone.
I'm pretty sure they'd have a sweaty paranoid panicgasm and open fire. Of course, it would probably just be the wind and if they hit anything useful it would probably just be the same sweaty pinkish luck that landed them their paid bloviating gigs.

i haven't read this post or the comments so sorry if this is way off topic....
i am watching "right america: feeling wronged". HOLY SHIT!!!! i am scared of these fucking people forget foreign terrorist!!!!!!! i knew it was bad but WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!
Posted by: gypsy at February 22, 2009 5:07 PM
Gypsy, you are ON-topic.
GI, you're right that this is what a majority of rural Republicans actually believe. I doubt it's general belief among, say, Giuliani Republicans. But they've lost their party to the radical fringe -- that element is now their majority.
Vera, thanks again for reading!
Posted by: Matt Osborne at February 22, 2009 5:43 PM
I live around people that make up THAT radical fringe and am fearing for our safety more and more. I am everything they hate: Brown-single mom etc. Posts like this make me more and more nervous. I carry a large hammer with me in my car and one on my nightstand. They are pissed off and maintain their Palin/Mccain Campaign signs with angry defiance and their church message boards blatently spew messages of Anti Islamic, anti-liberal, anti-anyone like them hate. Sorry to rant and vent this way, but these posts make me even more on edge than I normally am. They are the majority around me and I feel completely defenseless and alone. My brother is in the Marine Corp defending the lives of these hateful freaks. Why? again sorry for the rant...damn it now I'm depressed.

They want to secede? Fuck 'em -- let them go!! Bye bye now! Don't let the door hit you on the ass!
Posted by: Fraulein at February 22, 2009 7:20 PM
I'm so sick of this Republican vs. Democrats bullshit.
The best part is when Republicans behave like Democrats and Democrats behave like Republicans and people still cling to their so-called allegiance to these entities.
Wake up! Please!

Thanks, Nancy.
It's a lie. I read HR1. There is no 30mil for wetlands mice.
You are either a liar, or you have been misled by one. YOu should investigate your sources, they are untrustworthy.
Do some fact checking. You should know how to use The Google™.
Posted by: SillyGit at February 22, 2009 8:42 PM
Silly little libs, always claiming Google has the answer when all it does is take you on a magical little treasure hunt of sites plagued by left wing retards saying "google is your friend", never once coming up with anything factual.
Enjoy your Kool-Aid. The rest of us hard working people sure love buying it for you with our cash.
Posted by: JJ at February 22, 2009 8:55 PM
jj do you get your facts exclusively from fox news or do you throw in some joe scarborough for "balance"?
just curious, what search engine do you use? i am 100 percent sure those crazy left wing sites can be found with those as well. we're taking over. hell, you might pass us on the street and not even know we are one of "them". scared yet? we want you to work (probably beside of us...scary i know) and pay your taxes so we can fix that pot hole you keep bitching about. we might get real crazy on your ass and give you healthcare, tax breaks, and a condom so you don't get "the coodie" from rush's asshole!
i would thank you for the kool-aid but you forgot my lemon slices and well that really pisses me off.
Posted by: gypsy at February 22, 2009 11:14 PM
Don't worry, gypsy, I am sure there's about $20 million in the stimulus for loony lib lemon slices.
Spend! Spend! Spend!!!!!!!!!!
I use Google, don't listen to Scarborough and don't care particularly for Rush. Sorry bout it.
Not sorry we'll have more wetland mice studies, no siree!

My reply to dear JJ is in SPAM limbo since I filled it with URI refuting his lies.
Mostly I gave him a link to the Recovery Bill and dared the little goose-stepping prick to find any marsh mice in it.
