Common Ground
My reaction to the following video was exactly -- exactly -- the same as Joe Scarborough's reaction:
I have a lot of reasons to dislike Joe Scarborough, but when it comes to that basket case on FOX News Channel, we have much in common.

"What is he going to do for his next act."
Tomorrow on Glenn Beck.
Glenn Beck blows himself to smithereens .
Glenn Beck: The modern day Daffy Duck.
Act 3: The Oswalds
Bugs introduces us to the Oswald Awards, an award ceremony created by Friz for cartoon characters. He then hosts the ceremony himself, announcing the nominees - the Wolf from Three Little Bops, Sylvester & Tweety, and himself. During all this, Daffy Duck continually gripes about the fact that he's not being nominated. When Bugs wins the award, Daffy becomes furious and challenges Bugs to a talent showdown (aka Show Biz Bugs). Bugs seems to have the audience's favor, but Daffy eventually wins their applause by blowing himself up. Bugs gives the now-ghostly Daffy the award, with the duck responding "It just goes to show you, you gotta kill yourself to win an Oswald in this town!"

Joe can be a major ass, but he has a sense of humor. I used to watch his post-Olbermann show occasionally, and it was much less heinous than his Morning Joe crap-fest. He was merciless when Tucker Carlson was on Dancing With the Stars.

I haven't laughed this hard since Glenn Beck urged me to do so while pointing at the families of victims of The 9/11™. And man those families are hysterical!

ok, can't believe i'm taking up for beck but....
it's one thing for us to laugh and make fun of beck for all the crazy (because it is crazy!) but for the republicans sitting at that table and across america to turn on one of their own is shitty in my mind! not because of blind loyalty for people within the party right or wrong but because everything beck says through his tears is EXACTLY what these assholes believe and say! for them to pick on this mentally unstable, really vulnerable guy, who is putting himself out there to further "their" agenda is wrong. it just shows how crappy these people really are. it doesn't matter that they word for word have the same beliefs, they see a little sissy boy that they can beat up on and make fun of and they will. they are morally disgusting people and i bet they kick puppies!

Haven't been able to watch this yet (at work) but can imagine how bad it is. I have a question - Beck wasnt THIS batshit crazy on CNN...so it begs the question - did being on FOX turn him into a stark raving loon or is this all for ratings...I think we know the answer..
Posted by: cminri at March 31, 2009 10:34 AM
You know, I've not watched ANY of the Beck clips - relying on Bob's reporting to have a vague understanding of the insanity. NOW that I've seen it, I'm more angry than anyone can imagine. Glenn Beck is getting phenomenal ratings because he's using Jimmy Swaggert's techniques. Seriously - go back and get some clips of Jimmy Swaggert, and then compare to Glenn Beck. Only difference is Swaggert is talking about God from the Assemblies of God pov, and Beck is talking about patriotism from the hypocritical lying piece of sh!t pov.
What's got me angry is the deliberate manipulation of people. But it would be done. Obama makes his claim to fame using the rhetorical styles of black preachers - so Beck counters using the rhetorical styles of white ones.

cminri,
Beck actually was this crazy on CNN. He was always "afraid" of something. If it wasn't "the Liberals are comin' for yer guns!", then it was "Bush and his cronies are tapping YOUR phone RIGHT NOW!"
Glenn Beck has always been something of a conspiracy theorist. He's the guy talking in the bar who swears he just saw two aliens grab the hot chick as she left the bathroom, and by the way, didn't you know that one of three humans are really aliens?
That's his audience, folks. They're not really conservatives. They are more like the people who believe Area 51 is a secret alien research facility, and that 9/11 was nothing more than mass optical illusion, and we never really went to the moon.
Our kind of people.

Glen Beck is a nightmare. He reminds me just a bit
of the character of Leland Palmer on Twin Peaks who
when oft possessed by the evil maniac BOB (not Cesca),
would spontaneously start sobbing and singing old standards.
What does this guy see in the mirror ? RUN.
Posted by: don'tlookbackinanger at March 31, 2009 10:49 AM
ppp, don't ruin area 51 for me! hehe...
Posted by: gypsy at March 31, 2009 10:51 AM
PPP - he certainly wasnt getting the attention and ratings he's getting now.
Posted by: cminri at March 31, 2009 10:53 AM
If he's NOT crazy and that's just an act, then he's a good actor and could make more money acting than being a loon for Fox News.
Posted by: AdyLeigh at March 31, 2009 10:56 AM
My husband goes to work a sane man and comes home quoting this crap after having lunch with his buddies. They enjoy this craziness like they enjoy Big Foot, Nessie, NASA faked the moon landing, Elvis is still alive, and Oswald didn't shoot Kennedy! And, just like chicken wings...it all goes down better with a couple of beers.
Posted by: Kathy at March 31, 2009 10:58 AM
oh, sorry for spelling error. G-l-e double NN, like CNN.
Posted by: don'tlookbackinanger at March 31, 2009 11:00 AM
QT thats EXACTLY what i was thinking. Whats old punchy face gonna do when he gets caught with a hooker ... cry?
cuz come on now you know its gonna happen....
Posted by: jenny demilo at March 31, 2009 12:08 PM
Go QT! I like it when you're mad. And touché on the Swaggert reference, next thing he'll be doing is confessing about his next moral collapse.
Posted by: bjritz at March 31, 2009 12:12 PM
It's like FOX decided that since the Simpsons has been so successful they would just make a cable news network as a spin off.
Posted by: eve at March 31, 2009 12:28 PM
PPP, you mean Area 51 isn't a secret alien research facility?
Thanks, you just ruined my day.
Posted by: idreamofskiba at March 31, 2009 12:44 PM
Gypsy,
Sorry.
Cminri,
I know what you are saying. I recall him on CNN saying some of the same garbage, and all of a sudden he's on Fox, and NOW he's crazy.
I've wondering about that for a while.
jenny,
No, he will be caught with a young boy.
Posted by: politicalpartypooper at March 31, 2009 1:45 PM
lmao at Scarborough laughing his ass off
Posted by: MG at March 31, 2009 1:49 PM
Funny, I never did see any real TEARS. Did you?
Posted by: mrspeel at March 31, 2009 2:31 PM
That clip of Beck is like some money swindling televangelist whos at the end of his roap on his last gig.
Posted by: J M Ashby at March 31, 2009 3:38 PM
Now you see? That is the reason I think most people watch Glenn Beck. We all need a good belly laugh now and then.
Posted by: Lenora at March 31, 2009 4:10 PM
It just goes to show how little he respects his audience that he must stoop to such craven gestures to win approval. And his audience, who are they? People who find Limbaugh too sensible for their warped and limited little minds, perhaps? "I just love muh country, and I fear for it?" Yeah, right. Your fucking ass.
And, correct, Scarborough is a fiend for laughing at Beck, because he holds the same values. What a pig.
Posted by: Jim at March 31, 2009 4:11 PM
PPP, Glenn Beck has always been crazy but the (nonexistent) tears are new. And now that him crying is getting him attention, they're here to stay. It's like how Jerry Springer used to be just the average daytime talk show but after a couple people got in fights, soon it was happening every day and everyone knew it was for the ratings.
Posted by: Jeff at March 31, 2009 4:49 PM
Scarborough is a fiend for laughing at Beck, because he holds the same values. What a pig.
But Joe's not laughing at Beck's values. He's laughing at Beck for being such a pussy (as the kids are saying these days).

Re: Beck's ratings.
While it pains me to compare Glenn to anything other than a lump of puke from a viciously ill chihuahua, for the purposes of this analogy I'm required to employ some product that someone might buy. Let's say a box of Blue Nun wine (fav of Johnny Winter, btw...but not what you would call a good vintage.)
When you try to sell boxes of Blue Nun at an upscale import specialty shop, they tend to just sit there.
If you move your inventory to Bubba's Bait Shop, Taxidermy and Beer Joint, whaddya know...can barely keep the plonk on the shelves.
The fact that Glenn Beck draws ratings among the demographic that tunes in for Judge Judy, America's Funniest Home Videos, and constructs their schedule around the latest episode of "Ow! My Balls!" is no indication that the quality of the plonk has improved. It's still rehydrated blended grape juice with a squirt of anti-freeze in it...and if you're gonna drink that shit, you'd better be out in the middle of the woods in some isolated fishing shack because nothing good can possibly come of it.

If he REALLY loved his country he would set his hair on fire.
I dare him!
Posted by: Terri at March 31, 2009 7:14 PM
I don't buy it for a second. His tears are about as sincere as Jimmay Swaggart's were when he got busted for nailing hookers.
Posted by: D. C. at March 31, 2009 7:35 PM
He needs a live audience; the producer can then pan to it, and we can marvel at the diversity that is the US of A.
Posted by: pablo at March 31, 2009 9:05 PM
More and more I as I listen to these right wing nut cases it becomes apparent that someone has left the door to asylum open and now the crazy of the crazies are amoung us and it is scary.
Posted by: Montana at March 31, 2009 9:30 PM
Pablo, you're assuming that his audience would anything except old white guys in suits.
Posted by: D. C. at March 31, 2009 10:36 PM
Cousinavi,
That comparison was priceless! ;-)
