Morning Awesome
The Princess and the Frog - Official Trailer
Huge round of applause for the return of hand-drawn animation! Hopefully this will send a signal to Hollywood that it's not about cutting edge CG or photorealism (two things that often result in repulsive, grotesque chimera-like characters). A great animated movie is entirely about the story. I know! Crazy idea!

I turned Shark Tale off about ten minutes in and promptly returned the DVD to Netflix. Did it get any worse?

Agreed entirely on the triumphant return of hand-drawn animation. My daughter and I were watching The Jungle Book the other day and we were both stunned by the artistic depth and character just in the artwork alone (not to mention the superb writing, the endlessly-singable songs, and the inimitable Phil Harris). As much as I love CG animation put to good use (Toy Stories 1 & 2, Monsters, Inc., The Incredibles), there's just some hidden depth to hand-drawn animation that can't be replicated inside a computer.

CGI is great, but "Cinderella" will always be my very, very favorite Disney film..........I'm 63. LOL!
I agree with Elvis. CGI cannot duplicate the depth of Disney's hand-drawn work.

Hurray for hand drawn animation. I too love Cinderella but can I tell you how STOKED I am to see a Chocolate Princess! And I swear if that frog turns into Denzel....*swoon*

I'll see about this one. Not all hand-drawn flicks are great, but I do admire them stalling the push to CGI dominance.
Toy Story 1 & 2, as well as The Incredibles are in my top ten of all time.
I get goosebumps every time that scene with a captured Mr. Incredible listening to his wife dodge missles over the radio. The layer of tension in that scene is worthy of praise. Syndrome wasn't aware of the connection, Elasti-Girl (WOMAN) wasn't aware that her husband was imprisoned, the kids did not know how much danger they were in...
Then there was the payoff to watching that scene!
Hoohoohoo...I saw that entire scene in the theater, and I wanted to stand up and applaud.
The Incredibles really was...SPECTACULAR!

Maybe if this is successful it will herald in changes in other industries. Like maybe video game designers will stop making abhorrently terrible video games with amazing graphics, and worry about making their games fun again.

Hand-drawn FTW.
The CG-vs-HD fiasco reminds me of the heavy use of sequenced drums and instruments in the 1980's. Perfect pitch and rhythm does not a perfect song make. I think most artists figured that out, and maybe Disney is figuring out the same thing for animation. Those little human imperfections are what give character.
What I want to see is someone revive Tom and Jerry and produce some new shorts, hand-drawn (of course) and set to a score. T&J cartoons are some of the best (and most intricate) entertainment ever produced.

I hope someday soon studio execs realize that hand-drawn animation and CGI are separate art forms and one doesn't have to take the place of the other, that both can succeed. I like CGI animation (when it's done well), but it's not a substitute for good hand-drawn cartoons.
