Saturday Night Thread

Open thread for your Saturday night blogotubing.

Should I seriously revert back to a registration/sign-in process? Everyone seemed to hate it, though.

Whatever keeps the trolls away, Bob. I don't mind discussing and debating, but when one troll assumes others' PTT identities and has conversations with himself, and brings nothing to the table but insults and even worse bullshit than you see on The O'Reilly Factor, then it gets to be a little much.

ditto what Carl said

Posted by: veralynn at June 13, 2009 8:24 PM

Yeah. I agree with the above and such as.
And also.

Posted by: Wolfe Tone at June 13, 2009 8:36 PM

Especially when he seems to malign one of the regulars so terribly as he did the other night. I for one know it wasn't who he kept claiming it was as her and I were in another thread at the time he was claiming she was in here. Hard to be in two places at once.

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 8:37 PM

I agree with Carlos. I would suffer through registration/sign in if it meant that I could be sure who was commenting and that the people who come here with no other purpose but to be disruptive could be blocked.

Posted by: Kat at June 13, 2009 8:50 PM

As long as its not typekey.

In other news...

According to the Wrong-wing Heritage Foundation, unemployement benefits fuel more unemployement because people dont look very hard for jobs because unemployement is just oh-so-sweet.

Fuckheads.

Oh and whatever registration it is, I must be allowed to keep Goddamn in my name.

Posted by: J M Goddamn Ashby at June 13, 2009 8:56 PM

Well yes.. just couldn't have it any other way, Ash..

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 9:01 PM

Hmm... I seem to have struck a chord.

Posted by: Broadway Carl™ at June 13, 2009 9:03 PM

It's cuz yer smart, Carlos.

Posted by: Kat at June 13, 2009 9:05 PM

Yeah Ashby, the wonderfully high amount on the unemployment check I shall be receiving is going to make me not look for a job. How do they come up with this crap? I think they sit in a room and think, "what is the most stupid thing we can say about this?" and here we are.

You know I always say I would love to stay at home and watch teevee and play on the internet. Now that I have to, I don't want to dammit.

I want a sugar daddy.

Posted by: veralynn at June 13, 2009 9:05 PM

I hated TypeKey most often when I was trying to comment from my iPhone. It wouldn't log in properly for some reason. That and Safari would crash constantly. I want something done about that also.

The trolls aren't what bothers me, but their hijacking of handles should be grounds for banning them. With a sign-in process, that might be a little easier to manage.

Ya know, I was wondering...do y'all think Letterman's ratings will get a noticeable boost because of this Palin kerfuffle?

Posted by: Kat at June 13, 2009 9:11 PM

I'm only seven pages into Renegade and have laughed out loud three times. Here are a few sentences:

The school gym in Obama's home district while voting on Election Day -

"Across the gym, glancing repeatedly towards the cameras, is a balding, overweight, middle-aged man... his face becomes clear: Bill Ayers, the former 1960s radical and proxy for Republican attacks on Obama's supposedly soft touch on terrorists. Only here, he looks like a schlub, more threatening to a cinnamon roll than to the Pentagon."

- from Renegade by Richard Wolffe

Posted by: Broadway Carl™ at June 13, 2009 9:13 PM

I certainly hope so, that could be the best thing that happened out of it.

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 9:17 PM

I want to get it and read it.. QT was wondering the other day about the number of pictures or if it was suitable for Kindle.

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 9:20 PM

@ Kat - Thank you, you're very kind.

@ Annette - "number of pictures"? No pics in the book.

Posted by: Broadway Carl™ at June 13, 2009 9:22 PM

so does anyone think Iran will have a revolution? or will it fizzle out?

Posted by: veralynn at June 13, 2009 9:30 PM

I don't know Vera, they seem pretty pissed off. I could be wrong, but it seems that Ahmedinejad & the Mullahs pulled a 2004 Ohio, but they went went overboard. 63%? C'mon! It's going to be interesting.

Posted by: Broadway Carl™ at June 13, 2009 9:32 PM

@ Carl.. QT just posted it on FB because she was wondering about it for Kindle.. I was just trying to relay that message...lol I hadn't any idea..lol Sometimes the biographies have pics, I guess that's why she thought it might.

@ Vera It is looking like they are going to have something, just not sure exactly what.. there is such a lack of news coverage about it,

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 9:37 PM

No pics. Just 330+ pages of political entertainment - inside the Obama campaign. Pretty awesome.

Posted by: Broadway Carl™ at June 13, 2009 9:51 PM

Yes, everything I heard sounded great, I have yet to find it here..but haven't looked many places yet.. I need to get to Barnes & Noble or another book store if I can. But just haven't gotten there yet..it's been a little crazy the last week.

I really enjoyed Richard's book promotion rather than Jokes endless self promotion.

Posted by: Annette at June 13, 2009 9:55 PM

There is no news outside the U.S. What going on with American Idol contestants is far more important than any election in Iran.

I agree that the election was rigged, it seems a bit obvious. Should be interesting. The Sydney Morning Herald (www.smh.co.au) may be a good source of news.

I think Letterman's ratings will go up a bit.

Ahmedinejad is not/was not the leader of Iran. He's just the public face. The real power & decision makers is the Council of Guardians (the imans and ayatollahs). The president is going to be whomever they want it to be.
Nico Pitney on HuffPo is posting whatever news is coming out - I put the link in a comment response to Bob's post about Iran, up thread. According to a tweet on Twitter, Mousavi is under house arrest.

Posted by: ceu at June 13, 2009 10:06 PM

Ceu, the constitution of Iran was designed to minimize the power of politicians, though the presidency does carry some significant powers -- foreign policy in particular. That's why you have to pay attention to the clergy to understand what's really going on in Iran.

And right now, there are signs of a split within the clergy. Rafsanjani's resigned in protest and the Guardian Council is divided. That's where the real power-battle is going to be, and where the fate of Iran's democracy will lie.

Posted by: Matt Osborne at June 13, 2009 10:24 PM

I hadn't heard that Rafsanjani resigned. Too bad, that. He was one of the more moderate ones.

Posted by: ceu at June 13, 2009 10:29 PM

according to the guy live blogging on HuffPo, twitter has gone dark.

"10:05 PM ET -- Twitter goes dark? I noted earlier that Twitter was the only major social network still operating in Iran. Now something has changed. All of the Iran-based Twitter users I've been reading haven't posted for at least 30 minutes or so. The reasons are unclear. Some on Twitter are claiming there is a complete electricity shut-down in Tehran. One Iran-based Twitter user, @tehranelection, last posted an hour ago: "I have to shut down for a bit, the police are looking for satellites." Will update as soon as I hear more."

Posted by: veralynn at June 13, 2009 10:31 PM

sorry guys, I thought I posted the above to the other thread

Posted by: veralynn at June 13, 2009 10:41 PM

Matt - TPM also said they've had unconfirmed reports of Rafsanjani's resignation and that foreign journalists have been asked to leave Iran.

Posted by: ceu at June 13, 2009 10:43 PM

That doesn't sound good at all. Thanks Chris for the updates.

Posted by: ∇•B=0  Goddamn Silly Ratfaced Git  ∇•D=ρ at June 13, 2009 11:14 PM

I'm posting more updates on the Iran Elections thread. too bad the MSM has not seen the need to cover this as much as it does the Palin v Letterman bullshit

Posted by: ceu at June 13, 2009 11:49 PM

Anything to keep the dickweeds from hijacking someone's handle is fine with me.
North Korea with the batshit nutbag rattling his nuclear saber makes me a little nervous since I live next door. Even my insect overlords have voted for UN sanctions. I kind of expect them to do some sort of Giant Asian Noogie on his addled skull.

Posted by: goddemsique at June 13, 2009 11:56 PM

As a regular reader who only occasionally leaves comments, I'd rather not have to register, but do what you have to.

Posted by: Janice at June 14, 2009 12:07 AM

Janice, it wasn't really registering - more like what you have to do now - name and email address sort of thing. hell, the last one couldn't remember a name from comment to comment...

Posted by: ceu at June 14, 2009 12:38 AM

Carl - I finally went ahead and bought the hardcover of the book. But thanks for the info anyway.

Bob: You're on Moveable Type - the Atlantic works with Moveable Type too. Their registration seems to work fine. Also there's OpenId, which I think works with Moveable Type. TypePad sucked - but I think it's unanimous - losing the troll-identity thievery would be worth the pain of even typepad... but I think you have some other, superior, registration options.
