Prime Time Thread

Open thread for your Friday night blogotubing. Friday night is Samuel Adams Summer Ale night. Maybe if I keep mentioning Jim Koch's most-excellent beer, he'll send me some for free.

Adding... Don't mean to single him out because I like him a lot, but I overheard Lawrence O'Donnell refer to Pat Buchanan as "MSNBC's crazy uncle" tonight on Hardball. This description of Buchanan ought to be vigorously protested by crazy uncles everywhere.

Hey folks...sorry for the repeat if you saw this already. Bill Maher has as guests Governor Brian Shweitzer, the founder of Daily Kos and Doucheborough....I know he will probably not call him out for any of his nonsense/lies/scolding on morning jo(k)e...but one can hope!

Posted by: LK [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 6:56 PM

You mean like a crazy uncle that everyone tries to keep off of touchy subjects at Thanksgiving for fear he'll go off on a tirade about letting "the negroes go to school with white kids"? He's not crazy. He knows exactly what he's saying and exactly how he's saying it.

What's amazing is he thinks we believe that, him being a product of the 50's and 60's, he somewhere along the way had this miraculous conversion to Champion of Civil Rights and is just fighting for the rights of all citizens, not just aggrieved whites.

Bob, gotta recommend Blue Moon's Honey Moon. It's their summer ale and it blows Sam Adams out of the water. And this is coming from a devout drinker of Sam's Winter Lager.

Did anyone see the racist "what if" rant on Hardball? I just caught a bit of it so I didn't get the guys name but the gist was if govt. health care was available the maybe Obama's mother and Clarence Thomas's mother may have opted for free abortions. I swear I wanted to rip him through the tv

Posted by: LeeVanSpleef [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 7:16 PM

The difference MSNBC is this: you can't choose your family but you can choose who you place on TV!

LK,

Stay tuned for some vigorous Real Time liveblogging later tonight at 10 PM EST on the Awesome Blog.

I'm gonna plug Fat Tire, as long as we're talking beer...

Posted by: Nanotyrannus [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 7:28 PM

Good Evening everyone...

The best thing we can do.. is start emailing and calling MSNBC.. I posted the number last night on the PTT and if need be I will post it again.. but that's exactly what we need to do.

Email and phone, email and phone... that's what people did till they got Imus off the air, complain and gripe until people couldn't take it anymore and thats why they pulled him.. that's what it will take for Buchanan...

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 7:38 PM

@LeeVanSpleef His name is Todd Tiahart.. and there is a petition up to have him yelled and make him apologize...

Here is where you can sign it.

Sign the petition

Wouldn't it be great to have an easily accessible youtube style archive of douchebag comments that we could refer back to? The quantity of stuff coming down the pipe is getting overwhelming. Ensign who?

Posted by: LeeVanSpleef [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 7:45 PM

Mistress Jane is still unable to log into TypeFuck to comment on the PTT, but she wants y'all to know that she would like to ply the PTT with Demon Alcohol and do horrible, wicked things to it. Including, but not limited to: hitting it with a 2x4, violating it with a donkey sized dildo, and supergluing it to the wall.

And she especially wanted to be sure that I said "LOL."

Walter Cronkite has passed away

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:15 PM

Annnnndddd...now what Jane said seems really inappropriate. Nice going, Jane.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:23 PM

Nano, are you in Colorado? Just wondering, since your plugging our local Beer of Choice™ Although New Belgium has other stuff. My personal favorite is 1554, I think. Mmm...1554.

Also, for those of you unaware of the trickery (perhaps Mr. Redmond): Blue Moon= Coors. And Coors is jerks.

Posted by: El Mystico [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:23 PM

Will we have non stop coverage for the next week about Walter Cronkite's life?

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:28 PM

Kat- Was there a point at which the things Jane says were appropriate? Because I would like to see proof of this.

Posted by: El Mystico [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:30 PM

Walter Cronkite may indeed be one of the people who deserves the intense coverage that will be given to his death. In many ways he represents true journalism, which also has passed away.

Posted by: Georgette Orwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:39 PM

I agree with ElMys--and it's part of her charm in a macabre way.

Posted by: DP23 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:40 PM

Excellent point, El Myst.

And by the by, I have enjoyed your comments on some of the other threads today. You seemed to be on quite a roll. As Jane would say, you made me LOL.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:42 PM

I cant stop lolololololololololololing!

Posted by: cminri [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:43 PM

I lol..and not LOL....cuz that how i loll...

Posted by: cminri [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:43 PM

Oh I know.. I was just meaning.. we had non stop Michael Jackson for 2 weeks.. I am just wondering what we will have for a great man Walter Cronkite.. if ever someone really deserved non stop coverage it would be him. That was my point.

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:45 PM

Not a slap at you, Annette, I understood what you meant.

Posted by: Georgette Orwell [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:48 PM

Annette- Don't worry. I know you're worried that someone deserving of tons of coverage wouldn't get it, but the media loves talking about themselves.

Kat- Why thank you, ma'am. I do my best.

Posted by: El Mystico [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:52 PM

Ok, I am not always clear in my meaning...lol wasn't sure if it came across like I meant..

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:52 PM

Yeah I'm in Denver. I worked at a pharmacy/liquor store when I first got here and got introduced to microbrews. As they became more popular, the big brands came out with their own crappy versions. Bleccchhh!

Sad about Cronkite. We've never had another anchor like him since he retired.

Posted by: Nanotyrannus [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 8:58 PM

As much I would like to see it be different, Cronkite's death will hardly see any coverage. They are too busy obsessing over the footage of Michael Jackson's hair catching on fire during the '84 Pepsi shoot.

Posted by: Kat [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 9:02 PM

I am afraid you are right, Kat.. that was the sarcastic bend to my statement...As much as the MJ coverage was overblown the Cronkite coverage will be way underdone.

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 9:08 PM

Holy shitballs,he was before my time.

Posted by: Mike H. [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 9:15 PM

You missed a great one Mike.. Probably the best ever.

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 9:19 PM

Where have all the cowboys gone?

Posted by: Mike H. [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 9:49 PM

It's a result of the constant news cycle. I mean, Cronkite could be the most trusted man in America because he was one of three reporting the news. Now, there're about 435 talking heads reporting the "news" in a cacophony of drivel that pretty much deadens us to events and stories that should stop us cold in our tracks.

Maybe that was FOX's plan all along. Drive the industry to become nothing more than a blur of images in order to hide what should really be concerning us.

Posted by: Nanotyrannus [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:00 PM

That's probably a big part of it Nano.. I do think the cable 24/7 news has hurt the quality of news we get...

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:03 PM

Grilled sausage and summer salad! Who's hungry?

Posted by: Matt Osborne [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:32 PM

Another difference between Walter Cronkite and the various, interchangeable Kens and Barbies who read the news is that Cronkite had spent years as a reporter. It showed.

That's one of the reasons Peter Jennings was a cut above, as well...

Posted by: alopecia [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:34 PM

me!

Posted by: Mike H. [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:34 PM

Yes, Cronkite started out as a paper boy..lol right here in my home state.. He truly worked his way up from the bottom .. and did it all so to speak.. Now all you have to be able to do is look pretty and be able to read half way decent.. and sometimes you don't have to do even that.. look at Andrea Mitchell.. she can't read for shit, and isn't really all that pretty I don't think..

Neither is Glenn Beck.. I don't see anything pretty about him at all..

Posted by: Annette [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:37 PM

It's sad to think that Walter Cronkite would have a hard time getting hired today. Heck, Ted Baxter would have a hard time getting hired today (how's that for a cultural reference?).

Cue high-larious comments about my age...

Posted by: alopecia [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:42 PM

Also, back in Cronkite's day, the news division of a network was not there to just generate revenue. Now it's all about revenue and we are told continuously that that's how it should be. They brag about viewership not because they actually care why people are watching, but because it equals ad revenue, and they think that also equals credibility.

Posted by: Nanotyrannus [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:50 PM

Nano- Absolutely true, things really started to go downhill fast when the network execs decreed that every division was to be a "profit center," including news.

Posted by: alopecia [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 17, 2009 10:53 PM

Nano, watch "Good Night and Good Luck"
