Steve King is A Worthless, Racist Crank

Following up his vote against recognizing that slaves helped build the Capitol, Congress Steve King doubled down on the awful:

"[O]f the 645,000 Africans that were brought here to be forcibly put into slavery in the United States, there were over 600,000 people that gave their lives in the Civil War to put an end to slavery. And I don't see the monument to that in the Congressional Visitor Center, and I think it's important that we have a balanced depiction of history."

Nah. There aren't any monuments to Civil War soldiers. Except for the thousands of them across the river at Arlington or on numerous battlefields and town squares across the nation. There are Civil War soldiers painted on the wall in the Capitol rotunda for crap sake.

Faiz Shakir reminds us:

King "simply needs to open his eyes and look around Washington, DC. If he steps right outside the Capitol, he'll see the Ulysses S. Grant memorial, a monument that commemorates the former general of the Union Army. Grant's statue is flanked on either side by monuments of fighting Union Artillery and Cavalry groups. The Grant statue faces west toward the Lincoln Memorial, which of course honors the President who led the effort to free the slaves. In addition, at the Congressional Cemetery lies the Arsenal Monument, a memorial in honor of women who died while performing services for the Union Army. And there's also an African American Civil War Memorial that honors the contributions that African-American troops made to the war effort."

Question: How did a Palin rally wingnut manage to be elected to the United States Congress?

Wow. Again I believe this is the result of eight years of George W. Bush. Racists were welcomed out of the shadows and from under their rocks and are beaming with pride about their racism. He really believes, by that comment, that blacks should be thanking us for freeing them.

Acknowledging the contributions of slaves means acknowledging that America was, in part, built on the blood and bondage of other human beings. My guess is he thinks that really wasn't so awful.

Amen, Nano. You stated it perfectly.

Stupidity knows no bounds.

You know what I find fascinating? King:"... there were over 600,000 people that gave their lives in the Civil War to put an end to slavery." Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that the TOTAL amount of casualties for BOTH sides? If so, then, uh... who fought against those who wanted "to put an end to slavery"? What a complete moron.

The new acceptance of racism started with Saint Reagan, not Bush. Saint Reagan made it okay to be stupid again. He made it okay to refer to "young bucks" and "welfare queens driving Cadillacs" again.

At least he made it okay in the eyes of stupid people and Repiglicans.

Pardon the redundancy.

Dude, he's a Republican from a very rural area in Iowa. Why are you surprised by this? The only people that vote in that area are old white people. I'm ashamed that he represents even a portion of my state at any level.

He's annoyed that a young buck hasn't teabagged him.

Carl, you've pointed out something that King and company would never stand to hear you say: their side fought for slavery, and their side lost.

Wars have consequences.

Southern partisans lose their shit when you tell them that.
