Thank You, Mr. Schumer
Benen believes -- and I agree -- that Senator Schumer is attempting to supplant the Coward Harry Reid.
"If you did a consensus within the Democratic Party, you would find the level-playing-field public option to be the answer," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "And now that we have 60 votes, it seems to me like we don't have to turn it inside out for something we don't like."
And...
As for the co-op favored by some centrist Dems and tolerated by Republicans, Schumer said, "I don't think the co-op way can work. So let's go back and do what we should be doing: a public option."
Unfortunately, it appears as though the White House wants a public option with a trigger. Not good.
But if you're dialing Congress today, add Senator Schumer to your list. And thank him for having some spine in a place where spinelessness seems to be prevalent.

Question is, will Schumer et al stand up to Rahm?

It appears that Rahm just does whatever the hell he pleases:
OR Obama is just ??????
From Politico
WALKING BACK RAHM? A day after his chief of staff suggested the White House could live with a public option-free health care reform bill, President Obama released a statement (from Russia!) reaffirming his support for a government-run health care plan:
“I am pleased by the progress we’re making on health care reform and still believe, as I’ve said before, that one of the best ways to bring down costs, provide more choices, and assure quality is a public option that will force the insurance companies to compete and keep them honest. I look forward to a final product that achieves these very important goals.”

@Jan: I just don't think those statements are all that different. I think if you asked the President "would you veto a bill w/o a trigger-free public option" he would say no. And I think if you asked Rahm what the WH would prefer, he would say a public option. So yes, the WH could live w/o a public option as it should be, but they really really don't want to.

It isn't spinelessness Bob, it's greed that drives them...pure unadulterated shameless greed.

Called Schumer and told him thanks. It was pretty funny, the staffer who answered the phone first sounded full of dread of malaise, and when I told him I was just calling to thank the senator for having a spine, the staffer suddenly became very chipper. It must be hard to field calls from pissed off people all day everyday.
