Walking It Back?

The Politico reports that the president "walked back" Rahm Emanuel's statement about the public option.

"I am pleased by the progress we're making on health care reform and still believe, as I've said before, that one of the best ways to bring down costs, provide more choices, and assure quality is a public option that will force the insurance companies to compete and keep them honest. I look forward to a final product that achieves these very important goals."

But if you look at Emanuel's statement, he appeared to be in favor of a public option, but with a trigger.

We don't want any triggers.

So I don't know if this is a walking-back of anything. Until the president puts his considerable popular muscle behind a robust public option without strings, then we can only assume his position is soft.

I wouldn't worry too much about what Emanuel said. Consider the source. It was written in the WSJ. No direct quotes from him saying the president supports a trigger. For all we know, they asked him "Would a trigger option accomplish the same thing?" and he says "Yes but we're really pushing for the public option" and then the WSJ reports it as:

"On Monday, Mr. Emanuel said the trigger mechanism would also accomplish the White House's goals."

I'm with Bob, eljefejeff.

Unless Obama explicitedly states support for a robust, medicare-like public option that he will not compromise on we are left pondering how strong is Obama's commitment.

You guys are jumping on every report that is coming out like they are all true. Yet look at your sources..

Ceci Connolly, discredited by Media Matters in every piece she has written about Health Care.

WSJ.. owned by Rupert Murdoch.. Fox News.. Geeze can it get any more right wing than that..

Come on guys.. you are buying every piece of crap talk that is coming out and going crazy over it... what the hell are you doing. Get some reality in your selves.

I tried to tell you the other night that Ceci was not to be trusted and Lee bashed all over me.. yet the next morning he walked back his statement.. I have yet to hear a word of well I am sorry Annette you were right..

The other day.. Bob was all over the AMA was in favor of the Public Option and I tried to say NO THEY WERE NOT.. according to TPM, posted the link and have yet to see a word about it.. yet Lee puts up a post and says they are against it and everyone is saying it is the Presidents fault because he hasn't done enough to help..

Well, which is it..

Does the AMA support this or are they running ads against it?

The President is not one to come out publicly and state forcedly that he wants and will only support something with a public option.. you all know that or you should..IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING about this man we all are supposed to support.

Remember who we are talking about... the one we all yelled he is going to lose because he isn't angry enough, he isn't yelling at McCain enough, he isn't dirty enough. Do you remember?

All of a sudden you expect him to be different? Why would he change now?

No, I don't expect an apology or anything of the sort from any one... but it would be nice once in a while for you to stop and think just a bit before you go off half cocked and jump up and down on these stories acting like they are gospel when the sources are suspect to say the least.

I think having a trigger would be just as damaging as having no public option.

Only Roy Rogers needed a Trigger.

Annette, It is clear that you are/were correct. However, I think that Bob and Lee are correct to put pressure on the White House. I am not at all pleased with the WH's soft position on the public option. I haven't forgiven them for dissing Single Payer. They blew the best opportunity we've ever had for pursuing single payer. They gave it up for nothing. Just pretended it wasn't worth pursuing.

I wholeheartedly agree with Annette. WSJ is the Fox News of print. I worked for the Murdoch Empire and I well aware of the stunts they pull.

Single-payer wasn't ever going to pass. Public Option will be the set-up for an eventual single payer system in the future.

But I am definitely not going to get all riled up over every piece of supposed reporting on the Obama's administration viewpoint on healthcare.Especially if it comes from WSJ and AP.

We definitely should remind senate and the house where their interests should lie, which is for a public option.

My take on Obama's apparent "softness" is that it's a strategic pose. He is careful to give the appearance of flexibility in order to keep the discussion moving along and keep everyone communicating in a collegial way. If he starts going all doctrinaire and drawing lines in the sand and so forth, that will cause everyone else to similarly harden their positions, and pretty soon everything grinds to a halt.

I do believe he is intent on getting the public option in there, but I think if we start panicking and freaking out every time he says something like "I'm open to other ideas," then it's going to be a long, weary summer of panicking and freaking out.
