ACORN, ACORN, ACORN

In my Wednesday Huffington Post column, I mentioned the famous Lee Atwater quote about race-baiting and the Southern Strategy and noted that Atwater would probably have loved the use of ACORN as a dog-whistle for "nigger." Here's the Atwater quote again:

You start out in 1954 by saying, "Nigger, nigger, nigger." By 1968 you can't say "nigger" -- that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff.

Now watch this video courtesy of Dave Neiwert:

As Neiwert writes, there's no reason for this group of white wingnuts to believe that an African American young lady selling the flags was from ACORN. But that doesn't matter because ACORN is just a substitute word for what the guy clearly wants to be shouting.

Adding... Some Colbert genius:

Wow. It takes a real manly man to follow three women around and bellow at them (well, he was actually honking at them, but he thought he was being big and tough, so let's give it to him). Wonder how he would have behaved if it had been someone six-six and two-fifty…

What a waste of skin.

I really have to stop clicking on videos like that. Now I feel like I need a shower. And brain bleach.

I've read Neiwert's The Eliminationists twice now and it is a brilliant book. From my own personal experiences growing up in a very similar right wing environment and from subsequent experiences as an adult I'm afraid to say that he is spot on in his assessment of the right's racist, hateful rhetoric and tactics, and as such we on the left need to be that much more vigilant in fighting it.

I'm loving Rachel Maddow coverage of Acorn.
